Not a fan of the Tengo Project art style, the color count is far too high and the fucking glowy bloom effects ruin it. Why even make it pixel art at that point? It's antithetical to the medium.

I know things grow and change but 2D is the core of video games. You can look at just about any 2D game and your brain immediately goes "This is a video game" 3D stuff doesn't automagically do that

I mean yeah, when you want to make something look like a comic book you imitate the stuff comics were forced to do when they were made and printed on paper worse than toilet paper, when you want to have something evoke a book you imitate physical books with their paper pages instead of infinitely scrollable digital books, when you want something to look like a cartoon you cel shade it with two colors because soft shading was cost prohibitive when drawing that many frames etc

Mediums are defined by their expression when they were the most limited
>>
>>739005397
this post is somehow even more retarded.
like yeah man referencing the glossy high quality print comics of the 90s is somehow not authentic it actually has to be the piss colored 50s shit nobody cares about anymore.

most people alive havent even seen these type of grandpa comics once and are used to something closer to pic related, which lacks the piss, is printed on good paper and is generally well drawn.
hell, my whole continent knows donald duck and asterix comic books more than american capeshit.

its just a ridiculously arbitrary restriction and just as stupid as saying that pixel art should adhere to specific color limits.
as if devs didnt adjust to the color jumps from atari->NES->SNES->PS1 as much as they could.

The yellow pages come from the aging of the poor quality paper. New comics at the time, including shitty paper comics would not have looked yellow.
>>
>>739003263
No you dumb nigger, my point isn't that pixel art needs to emulate some arbitrary hardware limits. Using colors that are too close to each other literally makes the pixel borders less visible, if you're going out of your way to use pixel art in the modern day then the assumption is that you'd want the pixels to be actually visible and well-defined. If you want to use smooth color transitions and gradients then pixel art is not the right medium, you have regular digital art for that. Use some fucking thought behind your creative decisions.
In fact, colors being too close to each other is always, without exception, a bad thing in pixel art regardless of the total color count. Too many colors guarantees it will happen, and it definitely does happen in Tengo Project games.

Everytime someone brings up CRTs they always follow it up with the same set of example images from dog shit displays. If you played any arcade game back in the day, the image quality was razor sharp. You'll easily see the sharp pixels.

Yep, it's always from this ignorant perspective that interlaced TV + fuzzy RF/composite connection was the only option until the 2000s, when you had RGB, VGA and PC monitors for most of the pixel art era.
>>
>>738987818
We do asshole, but they expect to sell 5-10 million copies and download and pay 80$ for a physical copy.

Pixel art with CRT shaders always looks awesome to me, even when it's a native PC game. The Messenger looks fantastic this way. Just annoying having to use reshade, wish more new pixel art games came with CRT shader options out of the box.
