How character creation and leveling supposed to work in old RPGs?
You don't know what the devs prepared for you, and usually they prepared some gangbang for naive roleplayers who didn't invest in certain skills

you get raped and then perpetuate it by calling anyone that uses a guide to avoid being raped a casual and say they didn't beat the game

You can at least trudge through by investing in combat related stuff while ignoring everything else because then you'll at least have a chance to murder hobo your way through. Though it's pretty easy to mess up your build there too.

You make a balanced build because most old rpgs don't actually need to be minmaxed at all. Most rpg advice is overkill and modern games inspired by old classics are actually more minmaxy and bullshit than the games they're based, like Underrail compared to Fallout.
