Pokemon as a multimedia franchise absolutely lost something around the transition to Gen 3 (which is also mechanically, terrible) but gen 4 and gen 5 are mechanically good games and kind of find their footing doing something else with the franchise. But yeah, from a multimedia standpoint, losing Takeshi Shudo and the direct connective tissue to Tajiri made Pokemon instantly lose a lot of the creative energy that was making it special.
