You forget that this whole thing started when Jim "there is zero interest in games and IPs from previous generations" Ryan somehow managed to become CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
>Forced every PS Studios developer to work on a GaaS project
>Kept buying other game developers to add more GaaS projects to the growing list
>Bought Bungie but gave them full independence from SIE, which is what allowed them to do all the stupid bullshit from the past 3-4 years
>Put Bungie in charge of every GaaS project, who wasted no time sabotaging them all so that Marathon wouldn't have any internal competition to worry about
>Forced the Japanese PS5 to use X as confirm, and then told everyone that Japan is one of the least important regions for Playstation
>Gave himself nearly a billion dollar bonus and put the Horizon Zero Dawn creator in charge of SIE before taking the golden parachute out the door

>>738991801
>What's stopping Sony from shutting down Bungie and firing the person who had the idea of buying them?
Jim already left (see above), and while Sony might want to give Bungie the Soprano special they can't make a move until their shareholders vote on it. It doesn't help that SIE put Bungie down as an impairment loss for the previous fiscal quarter, severely downplaying just how much of a financial black hole they're dealing with in layman's terms, they're waiting until next quarter to write down $4.5B as a loss just in case Marathon somehow, someway begins making profit for them.

This. All of these CEOs are like blood-suckers. Loko at the recent change in MS that changed Xbox to XBOX. They make these pathetic changes to make it seem like they are doing something within the company and portray "value". They know little nor care to know how and why video games work.

I knew that the buying of Bungie was a bad deal, and that the internal struggle and firing of the people that made that studio was eventually going to bite Sony in the ass. They deserve it, Sony today, is filled with ideologues and Californian developers.

>>738991623
Well for starters there aren't 100s of them. But to answer your question it's because every faggot exec in the world is trying their hardest to land the next Fortnite, Overwatch, Hell Divers, Arc Raiders, Minecraft, etc. They don't care how much shit slop they throw at the wall as long as they hit big and something sticks, which is such a retarded way of thinking but it's the reason why shit like Marathon, Concord, High Guard, and Foamstarz exist. They're just chasing home runs but the most simple shit that none of these brain dead fucks seem to understand is that NONE of these games were trying to be that...they were just making what they wanted. Fortnite wasn't even supposed to sell on a battle royale and that was just a tacked on mode, Save the World was the main selling point. The Battle Royale just happened to take off and explode and that's the shit these execs don't seem to understand, you can't manufacture lightning in a bottle. It either happens or it don't.

TL,DR they're retarded. But the real question here is why the FUCK would they spend billions acquiring Bungie when Bungie has been dog shit for a decade plus now?????? Taking that billion and literally throwing it in a furnace to warm their headquarters would've done more for them than doing that.
>>
>>738991623
for the same reason everyone and their wife's son's grand uncle made battle royale modes when pubg was talked about and Fortnite printed a glorpzillion rupees with theirs
>>
>>739003895
>why the FUCK would they spend billions acquiring Bungie
Same reason you developed.
People tend to forget but destiny was a gigantic moneymaker and was a live service on par with overwatch in terms of profits. The problem is sony couldn't see the writing on the wall that bungie long stopped being a good developer and in their covid expenses frenzy and their massive live service push and with the threat of acquisition by a competitor looming, they pulled the trigger too fast.
>>
>>739004497
I think the last part of your post is true. They saw Microsoft going full retard buying up everything and got scared. I still think it was stupid, not even because Bungie is washed and has been dog shit for years but mostly because even with Microsoft buying up everything they've still managed to put out ABSOLUTELYFUCKINGNOTHING. They acquire all these studios and IPs just to let everything sit and rot and then lay a bunch of people off, it's actually pretty retarded by them and also retarded that this would scare Sony into acquiring Bungie.

Correct. They're all Frat boys that got lucky to be in the right place at the right time.

You're not manually remembering Mac Halo was a RTS until MicroSlop told them "RTS is dead, retards. Make a FPS!" and they cobbled together a "system seller" (it wasn't, that was Dead or Alive 3) in the eleventh hour.

Then made sequels in the eleventh hour as well.

Sony fucked up not doing due diligence and seeing they were frat boys that had no idea what the fuck they were doing.
>>
>>739007450
Are you saying any incompetent dev could just be tasked with "Make a system seller!" and pull it off?
>>
>>739002597

>>
>>739002114
>The entire game's art style was based on an indie artist's own unique art style
That's just not true. First of all, Antireal was already ripping off The Designers Republic, his style wasn't unique at all. Second, his art was abstract and 2D. Marathon is a 3D game with both manmade and natural environments. Saying that Bungie simply stole Antireal's art style ignores the work of their 3D artists, environmental artists, character designers, and animators.

BTW: Port Uncharted 4's multiplayer to Steam, Sony.
>>
>>738991623
>Why the fuck would you create an extraction shooter game when there is 100s of them
There's like 5 multiplayer extraction shooters that people are actively playing, and even then there's 2-3 of them that only get like 10-15k concurrent players. Escape from Tarkov, Arc Raiders, Hunt: Showdown, Arena Breakout: Infinite, Dark and Darker.

Where are you getting "100s of them" from?
>>
>>739007503
No, because I'm saying Bungle was lucky. No other incompetent developer would make a system seller.

They're just lucky that Halo was the only shooter on X-box at the time (you're not manually remembering Half-Life 1 was a PS2 port, never got a port to X-box, however Half-Life 2 did get a port while not getting a PS2 port, bafflingly)
>>
>>739007675
Ones that came out, flopped, and were forgotten. There is that H1Z1 rip-off one, Fortnight tried it IIRC, and a few others that were immediately dustbinned because they got no players.

It's not "100 of them" but the industry has been trying to make it the new "Battle Royale" since Tarkov got players. It's just the genre is so niche that trying to Millhouse force-meme it isn't doing shit for it.
>>
>>739007703

They thought extraction shooters were going to be the next huge thing in FPS's so they wanted to be the first AAA game of this kind. Basically they wanted to be to Tarkov what Fortnite was to PubG. But unfortunately for them not only were they beat to market by ARC Raiders, it turned out that extraction shooters were not the next big thing. They're also wildly incompetent with very little talent left at the studio.

The thing that makes me cringe about Snoy is the whole "welcome to the family" narrative, which they promoted once they acquired Bungie.

Snoy does not have any first party titles or games. It's all just studios that they purchased over the years. It's not the same as Nintendo's situation, which is mostly franchises that were developed in-house, or by fostering organic relationships with other local Japanese developers.

Snoy thinks it can just acquire random studios like Bungie, call them "first party," and expect them to perform well... what a load of shite.

Rare? Do you really think Nintendo invested heavily in Rare in the mid 1990s because they were amazed by Battletoads, of all fucking games?

Nintendo invested in Rare because they were amazed by their use of 3D technology, more than anything else. Not because of IPs.

It was actually Rare that benefitted from Nintendo's IPs - not the other way round. The Donkey Kong Country games were a massive success for Rare.

Nintendo never acquired Rare, hence why Microcock was able to buy them for Xbox, and Nintendo doesn't own any of Rare's non-DK games. As for Monolith Soft, Nintendo was majority shareholder for the longest time when Bamco decided they didn't want them anymore. They only became full owners a couple years ago. And Monolith Soft doesn't own any of the games they've made in the past, their back catalog went to Bamco, Nintendo only has Xenoblade and uses them more for their ability to make optimized worldspaces.

this is true, because the real damage was done with Destiny 2 going into the shitter because of Marathon development caused the brand name of Bungie to sink. That name does not mean anything to newer gamers other than something that shows up in their Youtube feeds as a failed company because of D2 self destructing over the years, so why bother playing their new products. Sony should EOS all their games and shut the whole thing down, including the name, and cut their loses.

I love this Marasissy cope, ignoring that Firewalk and the Highguard devs didn't have a bottom line or any other products on the market bringing in cash. Bungie still has Destiny 2 as well as the Bungie Store bringing in money. Since Concord and Highguard were those studios only revenue source it caused them to collapse instantly from them being massive flops. Marathon's failure will cause layoffs at Bungie followed by reduced content output for the game. Its funny its only been 2-3 months and it has less players and makes less money than Destiny 2 that hasn't gotten an update since December last year.
