Fuck you Barney
>>
Why is there even a prestige system in schools? There's probably some dude making youtube lectures who can teach better theoretical physics than a professor at MIT.

At MIT they teach you the real, secret quantum mechanics

because society needs a filter to keep the riff raff out of the top of the food-chain.
that's it.

knowledge acquisition isn't just sitting and listening to a lecture it's putting into practice with a specific goal, and then being given constructive feedback. you're getting neither of those by watching professor chungus talk about gauge theory.

Maybe the youtube tutorial was an exaggeration but prestige schools are still a relic when knowledge and discussion avenues are so readily available compared to 50 years ago

again you're focusing on just the raw knowledge source being obtained. the harsh reality is that nobody cares if you even have knowledge in a particular field, they care if you have a degree period. simply because it means you were able to do work, meet deadlines, obtain results, and meet expectations. the only place that's trusted to hold those standards is a prestige school.

Theoretical physics and practical physics are different things for a reason. Gordon is a theoretical physicist. He got hired because he wrote a completely hypothetical thesis that was, by sheer coincidence, what Black Mesa was actually doing.

Being made to push a cart down a rail was more "putting into practice with a specific goal" than anything else he'd done in his entire academic career up to then.

the paper you get at the end of it is important. YT lectures can't give you that
