Lost Ark and New World losing almost all of their players prove that novel combat won't necessarily carry a game. What does that say about MMOs? Is it a themepark problem?

Lost Ark lost its playerbase by being a fucking p2w casino full of chinese RMT bots
New World lots its playerbase due to rampant hacking and security issues and Amazon being turbokikes fucking up the game itself.

NW's combat and especially its PVP was fucking amazing but the rest of the game was too frustrating to sustain itself. The issue isn't the classes, its the publisher/devs.

That's because it was originally intended to be a territory wars/crafting PvP gankbox and only pivoted to add PvE at the last minute. I played the alpha and it was basically Rust.

Unironically too complicated for most esports players and, more importantly, viewers. The only people who can understand wtf is going on when watching high-level arena matches are arena players themselves.
MDI is a little better, but it still too hard for most people who don't play wow to understand what is happening and what they need to pay attention to.

PvP matchmaking is good.

I think the genre needs more than limitations on fast travel to be fixed and to compete with lobby games that give you instant gratification. I think it just needs more to do, and I don't think that devs can or should keep up with content completion. The genre just needs systems that immerse players in the world, which is something I think games like WoW are missing. My suggestion is economy. There's not much difference between making a bunch of patch content that can be played a few times before people get bored, and making systems of gathering, crafting, trading, and WPvE that make the world living and dynamic. I think that repairs only costing gold is a huge problem that companies probably won't fix until they make sandbox servers or a company surpasses them.
