I've been struggling over how to make the player and the main character feel separate in my indie game about a mental illness (inspired by deltarune lol)I finally settled on having the player be visually detached from the MC by the camera pulling back (entity stand in for player trying to resist MC's actions) in moments of extreme dissonance and displaying that he has more power over his actions than they do (and if you want this to stop and have total control then you'll need to get rid of the MC first)"If something cool happens the player should get to do it" is important, but I have been ignoring all along that the main character is deliberately uncool and highly opinionatedI just have to hint that killing him off is possible very early on
