1 and 2 are fundamentally the same game. There's mainly more stuff in 2, especially how they did interconnectedness between individual character scenarios. And by that I mean they actually comment on what's going on instead of going to their little story instance.

1 is worth a play. 0 I'm not so sure. The job system is inferior to both games, the town building is actually well done from an aesthetic POV but ultimately it's tacked on and inconsequential as a mechanic and as a story hook and doesn't amount to anything deeper than one of those stupid facebook cow clicker games where you occasionally run in to talk to every NPC to collect crap that you'll never need. The game also focuses more on the villains which is an interesting choice, but it's not executed well. They have shallow motivations and the writing feels more like grimdark for its own sake. Auguste is the closest the game comes to having an interesting villain because of how utterly insane and enigmatic it is how he manages to play the cult of personality to such a ridiculous degree and as a person who has had friends and family stuck in cults it strikes very true no matter how absurd it might seem.

I'd give 0 a try if I was desperate (I did) but I couldn't finish it. I just wasn't as invested in it the same way I was invisted in the Travelers in 1 & 2.

Apothecary MC + Battle-Tested Axe + Battle-Worn Tome + Swiftbolt Surpassing Power + Elemental Expertise = really good BP ST damage. Alongside the base Apothecary skillset for heals & a revive, he was basically my can-do-everything button once I got most of the ults.

Of course, Cyrus with Battle-Tested Tome + Searing or Absolute Zero Staff + Surpassing Power + Price of Power becomes an extremely good elemental damage dealer + breaker, especially with his 1-hit Scholar spells getting boosted to extreme heights thanks to Price of Power.

im going to be real and say, i played octopath 1 before 2, and gameplay wise, i found octopath 1 to be superior.

i only say that because it felt like there was more fun in mixing and matching classes in 1. people say 1 is more of a grind, but it wasn't that bad. i also liked the special classes better.

i will also say 2 was way easier than 1. like, in 1 you have to beat secret minibosses to unlock classes, and any of those minibosses are harder than any boss secret or otherwise in 2.

that said, 2 does have some of the hardest jrpg bosses i have ever played in the form of extra stories.

also people are like 'in ocotpath 2 the stories are more interrelated'... and its like, yeah theres like 10 cutscenes of 20 minutes of dialogue connecting them.

tldr; for me its ocotpath 2 extra battles > octopath 1 > octopath 2

So the normal answer would be that you'd have to ask the translators, but this is square-enix game. This is actually common in their games. There's no basis in the japanese for a faux-archaic english translation. This isn't like Tolkien's Beowulf translation where he argues the language in Beowulf was archaic even for the time period it was written in. It's definitely a crutch. They can't think of any other way to preserve the emotion/tone of the japanese so they go with their best ye olde impression to mask that. They got away with it in Vagrant Story, so it's their default.

When I played through OT0 I didn't think about it much, I was much more enamored with Bestower of Wealth and Master of Fame, but I think Bestower of All might have my favorite theme after all.
That game really got to cheat the rules by letting each boss have their own main theme + transition + boss theme. I love the OT2 character themes but they don't get enough time like the boss's main themes do in OT0.

Redeye is genuinely the most interesting thing in the game but only once you read the secret reports or whatever you want to call them pre-Galdera.
Graham's story in general is the best story the game has on offer and it's only text to read. This pissed me off about 0 as well. All that new worldbuilding for Orsterra, set before the events of the first game, and Graham only shows up once? That's fucked up, man.

OT0's story was collectively the entire Orsterra Arc in the gacha.
It had more: Side Solistia (short and also trash), Sacred Beasts or something involving the Caits (nothing of import), and now they're doing "The Unchosen One" or something along those lines while shilling "what-if" characters potentially for that arc like Good King Pardis III, etc.

he's also a vessel or something for Galdera
OT2 main characters pop up mainly to cheer him on and say he's a good person
it continues with awful writing where it comes to head that Lucian, leader of the Order of Blood cult or something
Sail falls and becomes Saildera

>falls into the same pitfall that Andrew's Game does
I don't think it's quite as bad as Andrew's Game in that respect, which I actually chalk up to the Threat system. Octopath 1's endgame is balanced around you having all the tools to be damn near invincible with Cleric's Saving Grace and dishing out stupid damage with Warrior's Surpassing Power (let alone shit like Runelord Tressa) but everyone is still targeting randomly at the end of the day so the game still has to be a bit conservative about it.
Andrew's Game, since it gives you the knowledge and tools to "cheat" who gets hit outside of AoEs, does not pull a single punch. I think it's an inspired system, I just think Andrew might have put a bit too much emphasis onto it, knowingly or not.
>>
>>739065886
I don't say it disparagingly, mostly just making an observation. If a boss can hit me for way, way harder than I can keep pace with, but I have a party member like Tressa who can make the entire party immune to physical damage or a Summoner/Black Mage that can stunlock enemies indefinitely, trying to play the game as you have been playing it for the previous sixty hours becomes a fool's errand that you are punished for.

I'm actually going through OT1 right now, working my way through Chapter 3 for the characters. I have mixed feelings about the characters (probably like Olberic and Primrose the best so far, with Tressa close behind), but I like the game for the most part, especially the battle system. It can be a grind at times though.

I've never played a turn based RPG that wasn't a grind at some point. Even if I'm not actively grinding for levels. Thousands of menu battles will wear on you no matter what.

Amazing. So you're just lying(Voice actress does not have a "farmer accent", whatever the fuck that means). If a character was meant to have a specific dialect it'd probably be present in the text. They do that a lot you know. Also here's Maron, a farm girl from another game(who doesn't have a fake medieval accent in English). It seems to take place in a similar era to Octopath so I'm sure you can point out similarities in Maron and Hanit's speech with the japanese knowledge you have, because you would never spread misinformation about a language you don't know just play defense for random translators you have no personal connection too.

Later parts of the story (Bestower and on) are far more difficult than the OT0 versions. Metafaggotry is basically the only way to keep up with the damage race and damage mitigation.

Pretty much, but Rinyuu barely had any presence for offensive purposes. Saoirse on the other hand has her ult to help with breaking shenanigans.

The lack of 2x speed toggle during battles (and all of the extra tools to break the game apart) makes OT1 difficult to go back to after having played OT2.

What’s this about?
Also, those marked NPC have side quests after giving me the job certifications asking for certain items. Are they worth it?
>>
>>739098340
Shrines require the character in the party with the same base job, ie Osvald to the Scholar shrine. You get the character's 1st EX Skill (exclusive to that character). 2nd EX Skill is gotten after beating the character's story.
Guild NPCs have those so you can have more of the same job equipped, well worth it since some jobs are really good (Merchant) and you could want to stack multiples of the same job in your party if needed. Like 3 dancers + Agnea for Bewildering Grace spam.

I know barely anybody played cotc, it’s a shame Zero didn’t use any of the collab characters or at very least BD units since they were kinda integrated to Orsterra. The other collabs didn’t have such significant
Here is a quick summary
> thanks to some shuffling books fuckary, the BD characters found themselves in Orsterra … or at least most of them
> Elvis: being the usual drunk jolly self despite being stranded
> Adelle: tagged with him, however she got homesick quickly
> Angés: had a side story dealing with a little girl who got manipulated by an asterisk
> Edea: the usual mrgrgr self
> they all decided to take shelter in “Nameless Town” which is Wishvale
> the overall first arc revolved around our favorite bitch Airy who they had to deal with again
> “to be continued” after killing her
> Two years passed, the 2nd arc finally came
> Gloria showed up to them asking if there’s a way for her to return home
> Magnolia crashed in with her spaceship, damaging it
> everyone started searching for any clues
> found Ringabel who was oddly out of character
> turns out he was corrupted by Airy again and betrayed his friends
> luckily he managed to drink some holy water behind her back to break free
> an awful boss fight
> Magnolia managed to fix the spaceship, but only one can return home
> Everyone elected Gloria
> after all said and done, Magnolia did her usual bullshit and wiped everyone’s memory of her existence… except for Ringabel for some reason
> the end for now
I understand why they didn’t bring BD story to Zero, thier story is not concluded even in Japan
>>
>>739098979

Same thing happened when they were done with Orsterra before they surprised us with OT2

Huh, an Octopath Traveler thread. I should really go back and finish Alfyn's game. From what I remember, the combat was satisfying, and the music was outstanding. For as much as I liked OT1, however, I put the game down one day and never picked it back up for some reason.

Same thing happened to me, I played it day 1 but dropped it temporarily after Tressa’s story that made me cringe her Runelord form was kickass though

I, too, was someone who played the game on its first day of release. Went through the Prologue Demo and everything, thought it was neat that the devs allowed players to transfer their progress over to the full version of the game. Was Tressa's story that bad? What made you decide to pick OT1 back up and play the title to its ending? At this point, I know as much about the games as any newcomer would.
>Alfyn's story started lame because he's so goody goody but things will take an interesting turn down the line and I liked it
Sounds intriguing. Alfyn's cute looks and good nature are what drew me to him. Still think of him fondly, based on what little I can recall. Always been a total sucker for the "goody two-shoes" type of heroes.

Yeah the Octo threads are always a delight when they appear. Funnily enough, I had a similar story. Played Octo 1 all the way through, enjoyed it greatly. Octo 2 came out, played it a little bit, and then put the game down for like 2 years before finally coming back and finally finishing the whole thing.

Not sure why you stopped, but for me I am pretty sure it was because Octo 2’s beginning is incredibly slow, at least compared to 1. I’m glad I ended up continuing 2 though; it also ended up tons of fun.

well, I hope you pick it up again some day. Or don’t. Whatever.

Seems like a nice thread, yeah. I appreciated seeing it in the catalogue. Reading your story and the other Anon, it's interesting that all of us put down an Octopath Traveller game before returning to it. Is this simply the nature of these games? Of JRPGs, perhaps? The genre sort of "fell off" with me at some point in my life, and I have been slowly getting back into it.
At any rate, I am really happy that you love the series as much as you do. Be it blitzing through the game on your first play-through or coming back to it after a hiatus, it just feels good to reach the ending of a title you can say you truly had a fun time with.
>second spoiler
Thank you. I appreciate your kind sentiment. Oddly enough, OT1 is a game that I have thought about for years after I randomly dropped it. This conversation made me realize that there is indeed a list of games that I do genuinely wish to play/complete amongst the myriad of titles in my collection. Maybe it's about time I took the plunge.
>His battle lines are pretty funny too

Without spoiling, her story was “maybe the real treasure was the friends we made along the way” it actually made me scream in agony. However you need to pay attention to her story and the other 7 characters because each have a clue to a certain someone you will keep hearing his name throughout the game
>What made you decide to pick OT1
Shit I had to dust out my memory, it was early 2018 when I got my switch as a birthday gift but I left aside to finish off some 3DS games. Then when I picked it up I wondered what exclusive games to look for. I somehow missed BotW which is a blasphemy for many and Xenoblade 2 but I heard about this new ambitious project called “Octopath Travelers” only on Switch so I kept an eye on it
>>739104521
Yeah they now starting the dimension fuckary where now you will meet characters from other timelines who are complete 180 such as picrel
But from what I understand the intro is a filler in a way until they made a anniversary celebration for JP few weeks ago where they implied they will go all in
I wouldn’t be surprised if OT3 turns out to be basically this
>>
>>739032993

>>
>>739105898
Slop is "low-quality, low-effort digital content"
Literally what Octopath is.
Does any part of the story strike as something unique and worth discussing? None. You will never see any plot discussion in Octopath threads. It's just waifuposting.
Gameplay? Boost and break weaknesses then use your strongest move all the time.
>"oh but you are ignoring the superbosses".
Who needs superbosses when your content is already lackluster from the beginning, you cannot hold someone interest long enough to reach that point.

But ultimately even if it's a decent slop if you loved grindy JRPGs on a slightly better than KEMCO quality level, it's also an overpraised, overpriced one.

She is using the present indicative, so does it mean "you're just making that up" in present tense? But "that one" implies she's responding to a previous line, in which case using the present indicative would be incorrect. Is that the case? I don't remember the dialogue well.
>>739018262
>Comen now, girl!
The localizer knew to use Middle English infinitives. So then why does he again use the indicative mood here
>Must thou makest our parting so gloomy?
When it's a question and afaik should not use the indicative, which would make the correct way to say it
>Must thou maken our parting so gloomy?
assuming I'm right that the infinitive should be used here. Of course I'm no expert, but I've seen localizers and indie devs misuse these verb forms as well as inflected pronouns(thee/thy/thine) enough times to have doubts.
>>
>>739111678
Whoops I fucked up, "madest" seems to actually be the indicative past tense(correct), since the indicative present would be "makest", which already shows up in the last line I'm talking about here, my bad. I still think my version of that one is correct, though.

Like a midway point between 1 which felt like a beta and 2 which wasn't topped by it.
It feels more like a spinoff (which is fair because the gacha is a canon spinoff) considering the basis of the Octopath Traveler gimmick of 8 "main heroes" is plain missing in lieu of the 8 villain arcs.
Subjob system is ass in 0 because only (You) can do it and everyone else including (You) has to make do with 3 additional active skills and 2 additional passives (along with locking out 2 of your base passives).
It also dragged on way too damn long (like the gacha) and lack of extra in-battle spritework actions/animations is very boring to look at since they're more focused on particle effects and the like (not as bad as OT1 which barely had anything). Unironically, I'd replay OT1 over OT0 if it had OT2's and OT0's QoL - I just can't handle how slow it is anymore.

It's funny because in some ways OT0 has a complete dogshit story. Like the whole game of thrones influence is palpable. It's almost even comical at times. But I love the part of the story about rebuilding the village. And the actual gameplay and level design is the best in the series. And there's a lot of content. So even if the story is pretty trash, I still beat it while I never could finish all the 8 characters for OT1/2 just because the gameplay is a lot more boring, easy, and simple while the story might not be dogshit it's also just as boring as the gameplay.
