Heard a interesting interpretation of why Midna sacrificed herself at the end and why she chose to break the mirror and leave her boyfriend.Essentially, the entire crux of the game began because of the Hylians using the twilight realm as one big criminal garbage dump. Ganondorf and the triforce of power getting sent there caused the entire mess because the Twili couldn't defend against that power. Midna's development throughout the game sees her learning to trust light dwellers, but ultimately she has to grapple with the knowledge that the power of the light world being superior would always leave her people at the mercy of the light. So, during the final battle she warps Zelda and Link away from the castle not only to protect them, but because she genuinely wants to test the ultimate power of her people against the triforce. She confronts Ganondorf 1 on 1... and she dies for it. After her resurrection she comes to the conclusion that, despite her own personal feelings towards people like Link, for the good of her people she must break the mirror, because when push comes to shove her people cannot contend with the powers of the light world. If nothing else, destroying the mirror keeps her realm from being used as a dumping ground for undesirables.

Like yeah the title has "twilight" in it and the twili has a black motif, but if you look past that surface level stuff the real content isn't really any edgier.
