I remember not playing this because reviews were shitting on it.
Then a few years back I played dark souls 2 while drunk at my friends for a laugh, and we both realised it was really good and all the hate for the game came from people who never played it and only hated it because other people told them to.
Now I'm reconsidering playing xenogears because I'm starting to think it got the dark souls 2 treatment.

My problem is that now I've installed it on my PS3 and my PS Vita but I can't decide if it's meant to be experienced as a Big Screen game or a Handheld due to all the reading, which is comfier in bed, so I've just decided not to play it for now.

I've beaten it twice, but I still think it's bad.

Disc 1 is phenomenal. Disc 2 pissed me off the first time I started it. In the end, I ended up really liking the game and can look past the pacing issues on the disc transition. It's just a great game with some good lore.

I would like to see at some point a re-release of the game done in the same way as their Saga Frontier one. Add in a couple of cut dungeons to help disc 2 pacing a little. Add Ramsus in as a party member. There's no fully fixing it with how much content they'd have to pack in. A little extra could be nice, though.

You also have to factor in the limbo of being split between multiple teams now. Square and Monolith would both need to be involved. The original devs were also burned on Xenosaga, so it'd be hard to trust them again for such a project. They'd had so much success with Xenoblade, that they may not even give a fuck to give a Xenogears remake a try. Nintendo owns Monolithsoft, so it'd be even harder than ever to get them on board with assisting in the remake.

I may be one of a few people who actually liked the combat system. The combo flow is cooler here than in Legaia.
