What are the good ones? I'd prefer something that's not just a 1 to 1 clone. Like how shovel knight is clearly based on mega man, but still doing its own thing.

It's time my son.
SMT, Monster Hunter Stories and Ni No Kuni are basically the only good monster capture games and there's a power gap between them and any other pokemon clone.
>>739013909I tried stories 2, it's okay but kind of shallow. Arguably pokemon is just rock, paper, scissors. But stories only being literally those 3 styles (and nothing else) made it a bit less interesting.
>>739013909 Stories 2 is baby’s first Monster Hunter until you hit high rank and start actually building genes. The story content is braindead, yeah, but the postgame is where you stack bingo boards, double attack setups and speed tune monsties to break the AI. It’s more about optimization than raw mechanics. That said, if the RPS thing bored you, SMT’s press turn system will eat you alive in a good way. Missing a weakness and watching your turns evaporate feels way more punishing than anything Stories throws at you.If you want something closer to Pokémon but actually iterating on it, try Cassette Beasts. Fusion system and type interactions are way more interesting than “red beats blue forever.” The indie ones cringe on presentation but at least they experiment instead of legally-distinct Pikaclone #47.
