Should I play this or the remastered version? I have never played any Diablo game nor any ARPG like these games period. What am I in for?

The original is hard stuck at 800x600 max, so you either have to play it in a very small window for the graphics to look good or have it stretched out and pixelated if you want to play it in full-screen. This is the one advantage d2r clearly has, other than that I prefer the original in every way.

Play the animation with orthographic projection, then have some script that extracts the 2D image every 1/25th of a second (or 1/nth where n is the target framerate), then have it run through all permutations of equipment/facing angle and save them into sprite sheets like this one. Although idk maybe the combinatorics of that many permutations result in your sprite sheets being 100GB or something.

There are really no ARPG's that ever tried to match it's aesthetic of being a horror focused dungeon crawler where you feel genuinely vulnerable. It also has great presentation for a game that's 30 years old.As far as Diablo 2, just get the remaster. The original has some neat spritework, but the remaster is very faithful and I honestly prefer some of the lighting effects and new dungeon tiles. Comparing the Rogue's Dungeon in OG and the remaster is night and day with the number of decoration tiles.
