How did Square get away with naming the monster with horrible bad breath Malboro without getting sued by western gaijin scum?
>>739018878Word predates the company.
>>739018878no one plays these shitty games, so they probably dont even know. ill bring it up at next board meeting.
>arr you smokingu maruburo in your roomu, takeshi?>no papa-san, I am only taking magicu musharoomu>okay thenu. just checkingu
>>739018878It's Latin:>Mal = Bad>Boros = BreathIn Japanese, "boroboro" also means "unhealthy".On top of this, tobacco company Philip Morris opened a factory on Great Marlborough Street, London, which was shortened into Malboro.
>>739019487>In Japanese, "boroboro" also means "unhealthy".What a beautiful language. Almost as poetic as Congolese.
It's not obvious what names are meant to be when they go through the JP filter. Why would a cigarette company even give some foreign RPG any attention? If anybody should have been on their ass, it's D&D for them copying Liches and Mindflayers.
>>739019972I wondered about that. The pixel remaster of FF1 kept the name Mindflayers. FF7 Rebirth also features a Mindflayer, with that name. I think they must have permission.
>>739018878They were too busy having to fight to keep all the D&D monster names alone.

>>739018878They stole Mindflayers and Beholders too and Wizards of the Coast are one of the most defensive companies when it comes to IPs
>>739022823Funny enough the Beholder graphics in the US version got changed, so clearly someone said "you know, our lawyers aren't THAT good".
>>739019460YEAHGALO SENGEN
>>739019895Japanese onomatopoeia's are funny
>>739020331>オチュー>otyughholy shit that romanization is fucked beyond all belief
>>739023793>The name in Japanese (and transliterations) comes from the pronunciation; it is pronounced with a short O and T (practically to a ch), making the pronunciation close to "o-chuugh". "オチュー" is the closest the katakana system can get to representing the sound without using compound katakana pronunciations not natively found in Japanese.
>>739024610ah I see, the english came first, makes more sense
>>739018878Because they called it Malboro and not Marlboro?
Trademarks don't really work that way.
>>739024648Yeah, Otyughs are 100% a creation of D&D, and Ochus in their first appearance were more blatantly inspired by how they looked back then. As both series diverged and redesigned their respective Ochu/Otyughs over sequels and revisions, the two don't even look related anymore
>>739018878Better question: How did they get away with stealing the coeurl from A. E. van Vogt?At least D&D had the decency to rename and alter their version. Final Fantasy just outright used the exact creature with the exact name.
>>739018878They are called Morbol in more cultured languages.
