Is the game worth the price right now? I heard you can complete it within 15 hours
>>
>>739019321
more like 6-8, theres not much to explore and the game bombards you with voice logs and icons telling you where to go
>>
>>739019321
I wouldn't buy it right now. I pirated, and i'm 15 hrs in with some stuff still to go. Don't know where it ends, but I've reached a red wall before and a message popped up saying area still under development. I think maybe a year from now it might be more polished. The early game is polished though.

there is noticeably lots of stuff still missing and you will likely get a better experience out of it if you wait like 2 years before playing this
if you however want to play subnautica with better visuals now, it already does a decent job at that
30 bucks seems neither cheap or expensive for EA fotm slop to me

I said a long while back that the best way to add tension back to the series would be for the biomes to be unstable. Like, you can start in a safe region, but then it can randomly get hit via a massive storm and suddenly you have leviathans and other creepy shit crawling through that area as their territories and migration or feeding trails are altered.
>>
Eh, my base is pretty ugly, you don't want to see it.

>>
>>739021578
Close to the lava zone if you want to use thermal energy later, but it doesnt really matter you'll be creating a new base when you get to the 2nd zone
>>
>>739020218
Good idea. One I had was to have certain predators (even leviathans) that aren't restricted to a particular biome or patrol route, that can perhaps prefer a biome but occasionally roam through any biome, including the shallows. As you pointed out this would keep players tense, as even traversing through familiar waters could mean serious trouble. That's one of the weaknesses of mid-late game, is you've memorized where the dangerous fauna is, making backtracking thru previously visited zones a snoozefest since you know there's no threats in those areas.
>>
>>739021982
Do you mean Alien Ruins? I got the quest to go there now after visiting Lava Zone base, but I saw a big fishy in the deep water and noped outta there. Just built a mini solar powered outpost next to the edge of lava zone tho.
>>
>>739019321
Its like early release for Subnautica 1. Shallows has shit to do, but the second you leave it becomes barren. No idea how long its going to take for them to fill out the other zones, considering how in the shallows you have shit like a giant fish that likes to ram things, and when he rams coral, a bunch of fish fly out.
The shallows feel alive and if it took this long just to make the shallows feel like a real ocean, I can't imagine the rest of the zones timeframe.

Yeah. I took my time and finished the existing story in about 25 hours. Still dinking around exploring and finding things I missed.
>>739021578
First base was right next to the lifepod.
Second base was between the starting area and one of the major story areas. I decided to put a base there after travelling past it several times and noticing it had a lot of resources, a power source, and no predators.
In Subnautica 1 I just put a new base down in each new area I explored. Worked out well.
>>739022324
I was just there and there's another entrance on the lower end.
>>739024285
Yeah I think the existing early access map is already bigger than the Below Zero map, which was tiny. The devs have said on their nolt.io site that they intend for S2 to be bigger and deeper than S1.
>>739024604
The floating dots are locations relative to the location of the scanner and in the same direction.
>>739024513
Below Zero has very slightly better graphics than 1, but the map is relatively tiny and super cramped and claustrophobic. It's not nearly as deep, the story is stupid and dumb, the characters are stupid and dumb. S1 has very little surface land parts which just feels like exploration, BZ has a lot of surface land parts with a dumb freezing temperature mechanic.
2 has modern graphics, better base building, a new progression mechanic (body upgrades), and it remains to be seen but is supposed to end up with a bigger game world than 1. So far it's all underwater.

>>
>>739026895
>Subnautica 2 has (stuff)
I agree with those points for the most part.
The sea truck was not why BZ sucked. For me it was the tiny cramped map, the stupid surface areas, the really stupid story and forced character interaction and dialogue.
The sea truck was not great but would have been okay in a much bigger ocean.

I wish the default moonpool size was the correct size for a tadpole. Having to adjust the size to get it to fit is not immediately obvious nor explained, and I had to google what the fuck was going on when I couldn't place the tadpole bay. Also they should hammer in the tadpole hardpoints more thoroughly, because I didn't know I could attach a locker onto it until 10 hours into the game.
>>
>>739019321
Not really, you should just wait a few years until it's done
>>
>>739019321
I am going to wait like a year then buy it when it's in deep discount. I'll buy 3 copies for me and my bros.
>>
>>739028965
As much as I like the more modular base creation, I hope they also include the older, fixed size rooms that are already big enough for their purpose for the exact problem you're having.
>>
>>739019538
Where do you unlock the ladders for the moonpool? I've played like 25 hours and not found it
>>
Is there a max size to a room or something?
>>
>>739029953
Price is going to only go up. Might drop after a few years past the 1.0 release but that's a long ways off.
>>
Is it just me or is the base building in S2 worse than S1?
>>
>>739030243
It requires a higher skill level to make things look good.
>>
>>739030243
+Small adjustments to make a room exactly as you want
+Much more snapping options

-Vertical options are much more limited
-Default Moonpool size is too small to be functional

There's a step back, but plenty of steps forward.
>>
>>739028965
>I didn't know I could attach a locker onto it until 10 hours into the game.

Uhhh what
>>
>>739030167
Try scanning ladders in any random lab.
>>
>>739030657
You can attach one of those floating storage chests onto a hardpoint on the back of the tadpole.
>>
>>739030169
Haven't come across it yet. Later you can build interior walls and interior doors so the room would have to be pretty big for that to make sense.
>>
>>739030657
The Tadpole has a Hardpoint on the back of it that lets you attach Tools or the various carry-able equipment like the Portable Locker, Beacon, Work Light, or Portable Oxygen Generator.

The Hardpoint is also where the Chassis attaches, but the Recon Chassis has its own Hardpoint so you still have one while the HAUL Chassis has two. If you can't get a Chassis to attach, it's probably because there's already something on the Hardpoint.

Word of warning, don't attach the Portable Locker to a disconnected Ray Chassis, physics go fucking nutty and it might take off like a stabbed rat.
>>
>>739019276
I think OP is the perfect example of the new base building shortfalls.
Everything is pretty much the same. Same height, all just kind of one piece, and just a flat roof.
Then there's the first game, first screenshot from google. Varying heights between the multipurpose room, observation room, and moonpools. The moonpoools also have decorative bits on the roof to help add some variation.

This is fair, granted this is the first version of Early Access so things are definetly going to change. Back is the EA of Subnautica, everything was just fucking tube bases, and the moonpool was just a square when they finally added it in after people begging for years.

Is it better or worse than Subnautica 1?
>>
>>739033704
It can't be better because its unfinished, but it feels much closer to 1 than Below Zero did. Subnautica 1 was magical on the first run, but once you know where everything is the subsequent runs lose some of that magic. So far 2 is giving me some of the feelings my first 1 playthrough gave me. Below Zero failed to do that.
>>

>>739033487
I mean I could be wrong, but the whole structure of the powerplant section is setting the player to explore more of Axum civilisation. The player has their eyes and ability to read their language, and the final section of current content is about their history and cosmology. It would be bizarre to just drop that thread.

I also wish it was introduced later as the player isn't given much breathing room to process that there's another alien civ before then being hit with the powerplant megastructure and the reveal that they're a fallen race.
>>
>>739033948
I think they're more setting them up as people who actually know what the fuck is going on, because seeing that there's two viruses and one is attempting to kill another and how that ties to the world tree is probably going to be where all the mystery lies

But they're still running a parallel story to what happened to our ship and how did the aliens get wiped out if they knew what was going on.

Ruins are cool and all but too many times there are ruins blocking me from building a base in the best spot. They should at least let us disassemble smaller ruins / old buildings to get them out of the way.

Pic related: I like the dark undersea look but that's only at night. I haven't yet found a spot that is permanently dark except for the original crash area.
I'd like it if they let us "paint" on rust and grime.
>>
>>739034502
I'm not even sure the tree is normally supposed to do that and the logs we find on the early days show the relationship the colonists have with the virus being more symbiotic. The second virus is the one that's taking everything over and so far we don't have a name or function for it beyond the "bloom"
>>
>>739034678
well I'm fine with it being a safe shallows tier biome, at least it's something new since the polar opposite of the Aurora, I just hope they at least make it a bitch to reach by making the biomes around it stupidly hostile if that's the case.

>>739034678
I think it's a bit like The Markers from Dead Space. The Axum want to restore the tree because that's where their people are, under it, but it's dying because of some infection. Their directive to restore the tree is manifesting as Masefield Syndrome and driving them crazy. It's actually a bit more Metro's Dark Ones, but I wanted to hide the fact I think the Tree is good not bad.

Lolno. You have to remember this is the first Early Access release. I'm guessing each major update will add another "petal" of content to the map.
>>
is this game satisfying if you just like making neat bases
>>
>>739036365
It could use more base building pieces but it's not bad.
>>
>>739036365
It's a very strong start. If you have giga basebuild autism like in Abiotic Factor or Valheim then you'll feel at home here.
>>
>>739022007
I mean the real weakness that the entire series had including this one is that you can cheese leviathans just by hugging terrain. Nothing feels threatening if it can't touch you. BZ was even worse because you child just point defence the levitation before it could even deal damage so you just freely went wherever you wanted without any shread of danger.

How the fuck is a water filled planet so devoid of plant life? Literally everything is just fish and fungi?
>>
>>739036916
There are little plants and grass everywhere.
I hope they add a more lush biome though with big seaweed or something like before. It would be a good spot for an ambush predator to hide.

How long did it take for sub1 to become a full game? I only played it years after it came out which I assume meant I experienced a complete product from the start. Curious how much time I should wait before getting sub2
>>
>>739043965
speaking of EA, SN1 had like 30 minutes of content so SN2 clears this part no contest
we need to wait for more stuff to come out but right now, the base building is 100x better, graphics are amazing, sound design is really good, fish behavior, controls, tadpole is seamoth but better, everything just feels like an improvement but from small QoL to bigger things like I wrote above
at the end of the day

To be fair it's somewhat deserved. Additionally, the lack of weapon does increase the tension when you are surrounded by hostile enemies. The point of contention with woke shit is that you aren't "constantly on alert and looking for" shit, it just jumps out at you so you can't ignore it. It's a problem because it's completely immersion breaking because you can feel the hands of devs behind it and it doesn't feel natural or organic.
>>
Do you think there will be more actual threats as time goes?
Currently most of the hostile creatures feel more like a mild annoyance, especially once you get the tadpole
Even the big tentacle squid/octopus takes a couple of hits to destroy the tadpole
Haven't felt all that afraid of dying yet

they need to tweak the big gathering quest later going back and forth in the slow tadpole and making the 30 ingots, which requires the big transport, which is even slower, is VERY tedious.

but i've enjoyed it a lot, lots of QOL upgrades like crafting from nearby storage, not having to hold everything.

>>
This is possibly the one game that'd gain a lot from telling its story the shitty way fromsoft does, but instead it chooses to have over an hour of blabbing that you can't even hear or focus on amidst the random fish groaning and the PDA talking over it

>>
>>739040341
I'll give a few examples. Some spoilered for people who don't wanna get spoilered even though the story just breaks near mid game like they assembeled the PDA files wrong.

-Lore wise the Earth was taken over again by the Mongolians, thats why everyone was Mongolian. Except you can make a black character for some reason.
-Some of the data logs follow some girl who splintered off from the colony because eating fish was wrong and she wanted everyone to go vegan but refused. She then murdered everyone by setting off a bomb and took off with her gay lover to milk fungus in a cave after murdering 25~ people because they refused to be vegan. Granted this could all be the tree viruses doing making her vegan and gay, but thats a whole other issue.
-Doctor character logs you encounter is black and French, because of course she is, and she is always right about everything and acts like a Martyr willing to die for being right, which she does.

I kinda forgot the rest of the story because at one point I started skipping shit once logs were blank or it was a literal paragraph of text with 1 voiceline that didn't match at all.

>to make the planet habitable for humans
If you destroy the world tree that planet isn't going to be habitable for anybody. In no uncertain terms, the alien logs states that the tree is what provides the planet with life to begin with.
It's the virus(es) that are fucking things up. The world tree is what made the angel cones (in response to the pleas of our early colonists) that enabled us to even eat to begin with. \

Most of the bad shit in the game is by the bad virus.

It comes from the tree and everything evolved around it including the aliens who put the tree there. This part is true. The game even likens it (and the aliens) to wasps and their symbiotic relationship.
But, there IS flat out another form of the virus and this one is outright malevolent. The bad virus is explicitly why the aliens are all dead and why everybody wants to swim towards the tree or go deep and die.

No no you don't understand we can not ever have the player enjoy themselves. They will pick shit up off the floor to build bases and that is it. You already built a base it already has the limited number of things you need to survive indefinitely? Ok that's it. You cannot fight anything or do anything except build bases and hide from fish. You're probably conservative or something so it's too high IQ for you. We HAD to make our space survival water planet game like this because of Sandy Hook School Massacre from 2012.

I hated the basebuilding in Subnautica. Transporting and managing resources is awful gameplay. The fun part is the exploration. The other shit is tedious.

If you don't just REEE-take Unknown World's side of the dispute against "da evil corporashun" and read Kraton's side, it makes sense.

They accuse the director and cofounder/founder Maguire I believe his name was of not even directing the team for huge chunks of time, instead using his office equipment to work on personal video projects and other hobbies. I believe his fellow co-founder/founder essentially confirmed his colleague was having some sort of rough patch or was disillusioned.

The director of the project not doing his job lines up perfectly with how disorganized and terrible at how slow the game development progressed.

Had it been professionally managed, the game would likely have been released by now.

I witnessed their incompetence first hand with Subnautica 1's development, they tried to Krafton as the villain here but now that the game is out and it's mega bare bones you can 100% see all their accusations of the devs being faggots that barely worked on the game being pretty accurate
The best thing at this point is for Krafton to cut them loose and let them sail under their own CEO's flag, and I'm hoping Krafton dropping publishing rights is an indication they're moving towards that direction

Theres no Lithium on the island the squid likes to circle, is there? I resigned myself to live on this island from now on, but I got no lithium.

This. Looks bland and dull. Lacking of anything unique or color. really don't understand why they just didn't just add more and build on the first one by expanding it with the deleted content.

>>739092385
how the fuck do you park your prawn
>>
>>739092385
you can do that in 2 no problem. the building system is more refined and modular. You can resize any room, make interesting shapes, make hallways, etc. You just don't see it in action that much in this thread because everyone's building basic bases and exploring the game for the first time.
>>

That's funny. My microsoft account got a random pw reset request roughly that timeframe after launching the game.

Surely they're gonna add biomes to the north and south, right guys?
>>
>>739095754
To the north, yes. You have to get to the tree somehow.

Still bothers me how linear and handholdy current map progression is. That spot near the Alien Ruins PoI is obviously the place where devs want you to make a second base, every cave there is so full of basic building materials it's ridiculous.
>>
>>739095754
>Surely they're gonna add biomes to the north and south, right guys?
They've said so already in the Q&A.
>>

I'd imagine they're going to add more map in every direction and probably shuffle up what's already there.

Piggybacking off this thread because I'm playing through this with a friend and I know the time will come when there's no more game.

>>
>>739019940
The games were never scary to begin with.
>>
>>739099794
the initial complaint, at >>739099346 was that, despite being deep under the surface, where no sunlight should penetrate, there is still a day/night cycle, in an environment that generates light/heat (as the water is 100C) due to volcanic activity, for absolutely no reason, everything is periodically dark, and navigation is impossible, because all light sources are darker because the engine has a universal day/night cycle.

also notable is the fact these threads are exclusively bot driven and i am the one an only actual person posing in them.

Alright, I think I'm done.

>Locker full of Pavlova
>Found enough Biobeds that I have 7 hotbar slots
>Built all 5 Metal Farms since there are only 5 Axum Bacteria Cultures in the game
>Two fully upgraded Tadpoles, one Recon Ray and one HAUL
>Fully stocked Gardens
>Made a rather nice base with 240 energy from 20 Hydroelectric Turbines, mostly stocked Lockers for every item in the game, bunch of Processors on standby
>Built over the crater the crashed ship is in so plenty of room to expand should they add a dock for the big submarine, so nice and centrally located for the next major update
>All tools and subs have the upgraded batteries

And now we wait.
>>
>>739099979
>you don't get the side seats in the tadpole till the end of the game
Whats the fucking point?
>>
>>739100259
>>Fully stocked Gardens
You can make gardens?
>>
>>739100267
The default, bare, Tadpole has two sets of grab bars.
>>
>>739100267
So you'll all split up and explore different parts of the map instead of Speed Buggy-ing it everywhere.
>>
>>739099394
it literally does "work that way" in the game, bot, as despite there being no capacity for the sun to shine, deep under the surface, it gets lighter in the "day" and darker at "night" because of the lazy coding.
>>
>>739100393
Why are you starting the argument all over again?
>>
>>739043902
This started happening to me tonight and also jumpscared me
>>
for the love of shit these threads are 100% bot, except for me.

the initial tadpole has grab points for multiplayer. you can accidentally hit them when trying to pilot the thing
>>
>>739100358
Yeah, you can scan them at the base next to the Observatory once you make it past the Collector.
>>
>>739100473
Can you take a picture? I have no idea what base you're talking about.
>>
>>739100409
there is no argument, bot, the game engine is bugged. it gets "dark" deep underground because of a day/night cycle that should not be relevant to heat/lava caves.
>>
>>739019276
I'm gonna pass on it until the devs get their heads out of their asses about killing the fish. It's completely immersion breaking that fish don't die when you hit them with your sub or knife equivalent.
>>
>>739100523
ok
>>
It's hard to know what's truly missing versus what could be on the roadmap. But the big thing for me right now is the bases are really boring. Finding a new room in Sub1 felt awesome. The new build system is nice, but after building 1 base all i want is a template system so i can define a room and then just put it down without having to fiddle with it every time. There's no bulkheads, no structure penalty. Just make a box, make it a little bigger as you unlock more stuff, and that's all. If they aren't going to have defined rooms, then there should be game reasons for me to make room. like separating the scanner from powerplants.
>>
>>739086226
>>739086917
Cute
>>739090845
I put them in the battery charger. I never even built the upgraded batteries.
>>739095754
I assume so. A dev said in a comment on the Nolt boards https://subnautica2.nolt.io/ somewhere that they intend to make the S2 map bigger and deeper than S1. And when you explore out of bounds it says it's the Early Access border specifically.

I think UE5 uses the CPU heavily for a lot of the rendering, lumen and nanite and stuff. I have an RTX 2080 Super and it runs great at 1440p with DLSS upscaling. A 5090 is several times faster than a 2080 so it should easily run at 4k without upscaling if the GPU was the bottleneck.
>>739099631
>>739099672
not either of you but I want a dark area where it is pitch black in the water and you are required to use light to see anything

the day/night cycle is currently so fucked that you can't see anything at all at "night" flashlight or not

>>739099936
It's good. I enjoyed it most when I sort of ignored the story and just explored and built bases in interesting areas.

There's one inside of a mountain, can't remember what it's under but it has that red grass. If you get close you can't miss it because it has a red light and makes a sound on repeat. There's another one up on top of a cliff somewhere near the metal farms I think.
