imma be real with you guys I never fucking understood what kilobit and megabyte and all that shit even is or what it does I only know that gigabyte is the one you need for gaming
>>
>>739023159
It's basically the metric system shit.
1 byte = one number from 0 to 255
1 kilobyte = 1024 bytes
1 Megabye = 1024 kilobytes
1 Gigabyte = 1024 Megabytes
1 Terabyte = 1024 gigabytes

But hard drive manufacturers will use 1000 for everything instead and CD-ROMS/DVDROMs etc are the america of data measure because they use 2352 bytes per sector (which only 2048 carry data, unless it's CD-XA shit)
>>
>>739024051
Wrong
1 kilobyte = 1000 bytes (10^3)

A bit is the term for "binary digit". In decimal, we use 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 0. In binary, you only use 1 and 0. So a bit represents a 1 or 0. If you have eight of those, like this: 10101010, that's a "byte". It has a special name because really old computers could only handle math with numbers that size. Then you can add prefixes to represent the amount of bits or bytes. "Kilo" mean one thousand, so a kilobit is a thousand bits and a kilobyte is a thousand bytes. However, powers of two (2 times 2 a certain number of times) are important in computers, so people customarily use powers of two for bytes instead of true decimal amounts, like 1024 bytes for a kilobyte.

>>739024103
This technically correct, but you will find literal textbooks on the subject by lots of PhD holders from the past century that use the terminology I described above.

The whole kibibyte / kilobyte thing seems like it emerged more recently, to resolve inconsistent counting of bytes by 1000 or 1024.

This shit is why you can buy a 2 terabyte storage drive, and Windows will list it as a 1.81 TB storage volume.
The advertised capacity is correct, it is 2000 gigabytes, whilst Windows reports tebibytes using the shorter TB notation (instead of TiB).
Proper notation for 1000 or 1024 bits of bytes follows like so:
>1 kilobit: kb
>1 kibibit: Kib or Kb
>1 kilobyte: kB
>1 kibibyte: KiB or KB

Lowercase first letter, for 1000s, uppercase first letter for 1024s.
Lowercase b for bits, uppercase B or iB for bytes.
I prefer the "iB" usage for kibibytes since it doesn't rely on understanding the casing.

You probably mean megabytes because 8 megabits make up one megabyte.

Unless you're working with stuff like SNES and GBA ROM chips where they're usually measured in megabits for whatever reason. 256 megabits (32 megabytes) was the largest GBA ROM chip, notable examples include Mother 3, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and any of those GBA video releases.

megabits are slower but more reliable
bits vs bytes is just a slightly different spelling (technically bytes is 1024 and bits is 1000 but nobody uses it that way anymore)
