LittleBigPlanet is one of the rare examples where I think the prototype could've actually been better than the final game. It was first unveiled at GDC 2007 and had much prettier visuals and infinite layers instead of just the 3 we got in the final game.

Players couldn't manually switch layers at this point in development, they would just stay on one layer at a time, the game automatically moved players to the layer the game seemed fit.

3 layers helps to focus the gameplay
adding more layers is noise and you have to start introducing hacks like the gameplay tweaker to prevent layer movement
its good for adding background details though, does muddle the playspace vs the background space a bit though
