It's kind of crazy just how woke it is to set a game during the Crusades and make you play as an Arab; that would be an outrage on this site today. But it was such a different time so Altair was actually just a regular cool guy and the sequel immediately pivoted to letting you play as a European with no nons around.

Did it introduce the garbage RPG mechanics? Yes, but it still heavily pushed stealth and assassinations, targets actually had Memory Corridors and proper moral discussions with Bayek, and you could mostly ignore the RPG stuff outside of the level limits by just occasionally upgrading your various equips. You don't even have to care about your weapons, just equip the highest tier and level you can.Shadows is having the same issue as Unity where Yasuke's idiotic inclusion as a playable character overshadows the massive improvements to the gameplay that game introduced and we're going to have a Unity situation again where people want the stealth stuff and realize Shadows had it, but the controversy surrounding Yasuke caused them to ignore the game so games like Hexe onward likely will move away from it again even if Resynced is using the seasons system at least.
