Overall the writing feels too focused on trying to be cool instead of genuine, and so the characters feel like tropes instead of either realistic depictions or well-written complex characters in fiction. That sort of thing may be common *now* after two decades of media brainwashing, but in Australia absolutely nobody would use white as an insult back then, people would just think you're a retard.
