Was firewatch actually good or was it an industry plant game? I remember in 2016 it got a bunch of glowing reviews and awards, but I always thought it sucked and the ending sucked. 5hrs of my time was wasted on this thing because everybody said it was good.Did I miss something here?

I remember being really confused by what the game was even trying to say. You were playing as some guy who decided to abandon their dying wife and work as a park full time, you do mundane park ranger stuff, learn about some guy who got his kid killed while they were camping and then try to meet your radio assistant who dodges you because you're obviously a creep, then the game ends.
