That it was a great shooter then and is still a great shooter now? Or that even though it's a great shooter it's the black sheep of the MP series? Because these are all literally the same sentiments that were shared back then.

Maxpayne 1&2 remake when

I think it's pretty fairly judged.

I don't have a boner for Max Payne 1&2 but the dramatic change in Max's look and personality felt contrived and the forced walking masking load times and so on gets in the way of your flow state.

And of course, it's rightly judged as one, if not the best third person shooter ever made.
