How did this fella get so popular in videogames in these last few years?
>>
Most of the stories in this are a fun read just because of how stupid they are. Everything after “The Yellow Sign” is bad.

Because most of HP lovecraft's shit makes him PNG because he's racist and icky.

They don't actually read the book enough to understand or use it.

>>739040646
It was in true detective, reddit fellates that show, and the nonces who write game stories hang out on reddit. Ergo, it crops up in the sorts of games that those sorts of gaylords write.

It's an allegory for the understanding of how the world works that comes as you get older and the attendant despair and horror you're filled with when your realize you're in a system designed to harvest your soul exactly 1% less than would turn the average person violent or insane. And he wrote these stories before the government went mask-off and started pumping everyone full of SSRIs and chemicals in the water to keep everyone docile.

I enjoyed picrel a lot. But OP is talking about how lots of modern games have incredibly shallow references to the mythos thrown in as easter eggs just to make redditors stim and roll on the floor and kick their feet in excitement as they go to post about it for upvotes from their fellow intellectuals. It's pretty obvious the devs have no authentic engagement with it they just watched some gay video essay like >>739041432 said.

>>739040646
Next you found out everything you play is Jewish (Kabbalistic), Christian or Gnostic, Islamic Sufi or Hermetic (Hermeticism, Alchemy), or its Eastern variants (which are the same anyway) or it's a psychological modern interpretation through the lens of Jungian or Freudian studies (psychology was a branch of philosophy before it became empirical science of its own) which blurs the line between empirical, scientific, quantifiable method to relying on ancient philosophies, theology, mythology, and alchemy to explain the structures of the mind.

The one that I see popping up in recent years is the Leper king guy. Darkest Dungeon had the Leper class, and then fucking Elden Ring had some imageries akin to the King Baldwin's appearance. The past couple years it's suddenly everywhere in fucking Insta, TikTok, Shorts etc. IDK if it's a religion thing or people just big upping it up just coz of the aesthetics and muh aura farming shit.

All the games with the King in Yellow in them that I've come across don't really seem to be based all that much on the King in Yellow short stories.

They're either le heckin epic reference with nothing more to it, or the King in Yellow is treated essentially as off-brand Lovecraft.

I haven't really noticed much in the way of strange books that make you go mad if you read them, or seemingly normal (even idyllic) settings where something is fundamentally *wrong.* You live in a refurbished New York City, now clean, spacious, beautiful and glittering with many lovely gardens and gilded railings, but there are soldiers *everywhere* and warships circling in the harbor while the federal government has legalized suicide and the mayor announces to the public that they have recently erected a strangely ornate "death chamber" of marble with a great bronze door topped with statues of the Fates that the Federal government has apparently erected as the first in a series of buildings meant to correct the problem of there being too few suicides since legalization. Or visiting the Church to calm your nerves (after having read the King in Yellow), when you notice that the organ music strange, abrasive and erratic and when you've about had enough of it and look for the organist, you see a strange pale man at the organ who is *looking right at you* with an expression of utter hatred upon his face. Or you're an artist in your studio, creating a portrait of your model when you notice that the color of your paint is off, and the more you try to fix it, the worse it becomes until you realize that the model in your portrait looks like a corpse, and your model comes over to you and incredulously asks if she really looks like that, to which you respond that there's something wrong with your paint... when you both notice a strange man in the church yard outside of your window apparently looking at you. So on and so forth.

>>
>>739043694
No one actually read the original King in Yellow and realize the horror of KIY infecting humanity with forbidden information through their highest mediums, like art. I have no idea where people get "infinite knowledge" from, the point is that the King increasingly drives you mad through your surroundings until you become a Carcosa nationalist and start participating in his play, where he plays the role of curtains (as in, controlling the narrative).
>>
>>739044837
There's really nothing in common whatsoever, it's a pseud take.
>>
>>739044837
It's very similar to the CoC/DG conception of Yella Kang/Hastur, i.e. John Tynes' take. Next to nothing to the original short story.

Nyarlathotep is a much better villain for like, 99% of stories trying to tap into the mythos and trying to use the popular shit like Cthulhu. His whole thing is being a petty fucker that creates labyrinthian plans of mass destruction just for his petty amusement.
>>
>>739041432
True Detective was a good show
Why are you obsessed with leddit?
>>
>>739045061
He frequently ends up being too much of a Saturday morning cartoon villain.
>>
>>739045056
Crazy how the sequel retroactively killed this video because the creator decides to turn the King into a generic monologuing villain that they defeat at the end after fucking around for most of the video
>>
>>739045121
I think you can play into that aspect by having the story investigate the whole dynamic until they dig too deep and realize how fucked things are on a grand scale. There's a lot of cosmic horror to be pumped out of Nyar's villainy if you remember that it's a eldritch god doing it, and he's the single most human one out of them all.
>>
>>739044002
It does though? I mean the general framing device of "Let me, John McAuthorselfinsert, explain the particulars of this curazy supernatural shit that happened! It was so indescribable I can't describe it to you without shattering both our minds! (proceeds to describe it to you)".
I can think of The Dunwitch Horror, The Call of Cthulhu, and The Color out of Space, just off the top of my head that follow this narrative structure.
>>
>>739045056
Unironically speaking how the FUCK did he make the sequel so shit when he nailed it perfectly on the first try?
>>
>>739040646

>>
>>739045284
>>739045130
idk but if he had any integrity he would delete it
>>
>>739045284
the first vid was a fluke. it's super easy to add a black square from vhs horror shit and go "ooo spooky indescribable eldritch being!!"
>>
>>739045190
I guess I just prefer the less anthropomorphized threats. Things like "Observer Effect" where the threat is literally an evil physics experiment.
>>
>>739045352
The twist isn't "oooo spooky" the twist is everyone familiar with the mythos KNOWS what's behind the black square already. It's a subversion because the black square is there to protect the viewer of the video from the curse.
>>
>>739045352
It wasn't just the climax, apart from a few youtubeisms the entire video was appropriately subtle, well written, and well paced which are qualities basically the exact opposite of the sequel.
>>
>>739040646
Because it's based af?
True Detective, Signalis, Fear and Hunger, The Last Door.
These are all peak.

Lovecraft just became a reference factory in the last decade, not even the stories or the characters themselves but as an aesthetic, and 'look! it's that thing!' kind of reference
the king in yellow is just another akira bike slide at this point

Lovecraft's Dreamlands, mainly. You can also find hints of it here and there if you look hard enough, from the original WW Changeling TTRPG to Gaiman's Sandman.
Pre-Tolkien fantasy is terra incognita for the modern self-proclaimed 'nerds', unfortunately.

>>739048782
>>739048909
Bloodborne, I guess, if you dig into the lore deep enough.

>guy goes schizo edgelord by reading a book and murders his bro's gf, actually achieves nothing it was all a schizo delusion, gets utterly mogged by gigachad brother
>retards have a pool of instant-glassification murder water, what could go wrong???
>some kid meets a creepy guy at church, and then nothing happens
>some faggy artist flirts with his painting model by talking about dreams and the number of fingers on some guy's hand outside
dropped it after that last stinker, although none of the stories were really any good, very pretentious work that always seems to be going somewhere interesting then just stops and goes to the next half-baked story before doing anything interesting. really boring book, those children's short story horror series were way, way better than this shit, the king in yellow is pure blueballing trashbags filled with romanceslop
>>
>>739049119
Yeah, the original KiY novel is not very good. Its real value comes from bringing Symbolist influences into the Lovecraftian mythos.

Most "King in Yellow" material referenced in pop culture comes from CoC/Delta Green.

I'm trying to remember the title of a book series I only saw a synopsis of
It has extremely archaic prose, there is some sort of noble court, there are pocket dimensions or shit like that
it's might be an unfinished series or a trilogy
LLMs keep pointing me to stuff by bakker, wolfe, and zelazny but none of what I've seen fit the synopsis I'm vaguely remembering
>>
>>739053370
We will need more than that if you want us to help you, anon.
Can you remember anything from that synopsis ?
>>
>>739055310
there is some sort of war or battle between two factions in the court (i think)
I'm really only remembering the aesthetic of the synopsis I read, or like the impression I imagined while reading it, and not even the fine details of the synopsis itself
I do remember the prose really is extremely archaic and "shakespearean" for lack of better term

People who grew up with True Detective are now adults making games. It's also less deeply connected to icky things like racism than Lovecraft. So you have the game about the interracial abusive relationship where the woman leaves for another woman and man is the real monster referencing this instead of Lovecraft.
You now realize True Detective season 1 is 12 years old.
>>
>>739046779
No way, even the translators of the game itself missed the reference, I doubt most players caught it, let alone made it popular.

>>739045284
