The GBA games are better however the GBA is toaster hardware while the SOTN was a game with high production values being developed for home console.

Just beat it last week. There's a lot of content, especially a crazy wealth of secrets, but as a game it's not that great.
For one, the level design fucking sucks even before you have to redo the whole game (but on the empty ceiling this time). The gate / key system for its abilities might as well not exist for all the use you get out of it, encounter design is D tier (absurd given how great Rondo's was right before), and the over-reliance on obtuse motion inputs slows down combat and makes magic tedious.
Perhaps worst of all the balance is absolutely all over the fucking map. For two thirds of the game you will be one-shoting every enemy and taking 1 damage. You will be wombo-comboed and repeatedly knocked back to emerge having taken 16 damage. Likewise, you will end up killing bosses before you get to see their entire moveset. Then, you'll enter a room and get half your life blasted by a single attack by a new enemy. Who designed this piece of shit?
I will say it looks and sounds very nice, and has a lot of interesting moments in the story at least. Every single DS Castlevania and Aria on GBA is better though, in almost every regard. It was an inventive and risk-taking prototype for better things to come.
