For work-related reasons, I'm going to be stuck in a cabin in some very remote area for a few months, with probably limited access to the internet.
My only computer will be a used I7 thinkpad X230. Can you recommend be some good games that can actually run on this thing? I've read thing like GTAV and MGS5 can apparently run on it somehow but I find it hard to believe.

I may have run bioshock on that turd at low settings, but it chugged on gtaSA during the early firefighting mission. So give up the GTAV dreams. if you have spare drives load up on pirated blender/godot courses, maybe you'll get tired of gaming.

MGSV runs like a dream on low-spec machines. I remember back in 2016, way before the current handheld mini-PC craze we have today, earlier GPDwin models was able to run MGSV at a nice 40fps on medium which I thought was mindblowing at the time. I'm sure with the right tools like Lossless Scaling and optimization mods you could get MGSV running at an acceptable framerate

And yeah everyone has the right idea, forget about modern garbage and get loaded with a shitton of emulator/roms and compressed isos, also games from before 2010 basically. Make extra sure you choose emulators that runs on that system, test some before you go. Honestly if you can run pcsx2 you're golden. I just checked for you actually and you can get away with pcsx2 at x2 res, but that means duckstation will work fine. Compress the games in .chd.
Also get into shmups. You can get a lot of the best arcade shmups for less than a gig of memory and they'll last your forever if you try to 1CC them.

I've been in a similar situation before.

You don't want to play games that it can barely run with bad frame rate and ugly graphics, possibly also bad controls if you don't have a gaming mouse ,etc. You want to have a proper experience and not a degraded one. That way you get immersed and don't wish you were playing at home. The games to play on a non-gaming pc are typically 10 years older than that machine.

Late 90s to mid 2000s Windows games is the sweet spot for PC games that will be easy to set up, run well, and take up a reasonable amount of storage. You can also really increase your library for little storage by including some roms for 3rd and 4th gen consoles + similar handhelds. Might as well also add some ebooks, tv shows and so on, if you have the storage, you can get some variety.

I would suggest some games you can get into long term such as sandbox, RTS, RPG, racing, but also some linear single player games for variety. Get a variety of genres and aesthetics so you don't get too tired of them.

Any classics in genres you like that you haven't got around to should be the top of your list.

If it were me, I would include some VNs, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, X-Wing Alliance, Descent 3, Unreal, Richard Burns Rally, those are what's on my list right now anyway.

If you don't already have, I recommend you get some good quality IEM or headphone too if it is not practical to bring speakers. You can get a good 1DD IEM and dongle dac for less than $40. I wouldn't want to be relying on laptop speakers for a few months.

You want to have games that are entirely DRM free such as what you can buy from GOG. You don't want to rely on Steam or any other online store if you will not be able to validate your library online.

"T480" is reddit tier popular opinion. If you want your shit to last don't buy anything past the xx30 series. since the xx40 series these were changed irredeemably for the worse

A four-core T430 performs better than a T480 by the way and the latter has the shitty ultralow voltage processor soldered on.

Case in point: A tech illiterate retard.

I own both. I've used both. The T430 is the better option because the CPU is not limited by the emaciated 15W CPU power limit that the T480 has AND since they decided to make the T480 so thin to appease you fucking normalfaggot retards, the cooling also suffers on the T480.
I know you've never actually used one because you're so retarded, but if you had you'd know the fucking thing suffers from horrid overheating compensation that constantly tanks the CPU performance to avoid the shitty ultralow voltage CPU from exploding. Good luck getting consistent frames on any non-sprite based dx11 game, stupid negro.

>you're such a faggot retard dipshit pretending that x20 and x30 arent way too old at this point
They're "too old" for tech illiterate faggots like you. I agree.

newsflash retard - CPUs GOT MORE EFFICIENT
also newer GPU means better performance, driver and especially Vulkan support
but keep spouting dogshit
picrel is best spec for each device
also good luck finding a T430 with a good panel..oh thats right you cant because the best one you can get is a 14.0" 1600x900 LED-backlit TN panel

also since you're clearly a poorfag and tech illiterate
regardless of the machine you buy you will have to repaste it and the best thing to use is PTM7950, used it on all TPs I worked on and never had issues, except with X240...that is by far the biggest dogshit ever made with TP branding on it
but no T480 doesnt have any thermal issues, plus its very easy to set up a more aggressive fan curve IF NEEDED, plus its fan is way quieter compared to T430

maybe something that is brain dead just fun to control like pseudoregalia. Slightly different, but a nice big total war game with a few mods like total war medieval 2 might be good to have for some spectical and long lasting gameplay. maybe download an emulator and play easy to run gameboy and snes games like metroid zero mission and mario 3. Thinnking about it, if your computer could handle it, emulate a ds and play some card game games like Yugioh over the nexus. If even those cant run, play a roguelike like nethack or Sil, those can run on anything. might as well get doom for some more action stuff.

A big surprise I found was that Nova Drift works quite well.

Simcity 4 Deluxe with the NAM addon. NAM is required because it contains several scripts that improves game functionality reducing crashes/softlocks. It is effectively a fan patch curated from over a decade of SC4D modding. I also suggest buying, with money, the Simtropolis Official Addon Pack.

Once you got that working, do a second install (I don't actually expect you to really *buy* the base game) and install the SimMars mod. It is over a decade old but is probably the ultimate space colony building game .. it is literally SimCity 4 Deluxe on Mars. With it's own unique soundtrack by a competent musician.

Doom and billion wads for it. Quake as well.
Neverwinter Nights
Civ games. IV-VII(or just VI). Get mods.
Skyrim. Get mods.

Terraria. Calamity mod.
Deus Ex
FFVII, VIII(not my thing but eh), IX, X, X-2, XII(Zodiac Age)

Bloons.
Emulators. NES-Wii U/Switch. PS1+PS2. That should last you for years.
Consider Decomps of Zelda OoT, MM, and TP as well.
Dragon Quest games. 3DS emulated VIII with orchestral is good. XI Steam release is good enough. Ask for more DQ stuff from others.
Pokemon games.

There.

What the fuck. I don't mean this in bad way, but find someone to talk with. Your ancestors didn't have this problem while watching stars, there is something on your mind you need support and help with. No shame in it either, probably just the environment you have been living in that appreciating cosmos and nature drives that kind of thoughts into surface.
Consider also writing about them.

I was in a somewhat similar situation like you anon.
University related reasons, go abroad and I had a shittier laptop than you, but atleast the internet was more available.
I bougth an external hard-drive and pre-downloaded a bunch of movies and game setups. I've downloaded the entire Reflexive Arcade lineup because my laptop was THAT bad.
Apart from those, I also downloaded emulators and a boat load of roms. Mostly NES, SNES, PS1-2-P. Just googled "top 100 games for [console]" and downloaded them all.
Of course, other old games like Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and the original (but modded) XCom were also there.
I've also played a lot of sandbox erotic games as they usually require very little in hardware such as
EraTohoK and Artificial Academy 2.

What I realized is that despite how I was essentially forced into only playing very old or very old looking games, I still had more fun than I anticipated.
After I returned home, I wasn't even really that interested in new games anymore.

>i don't need help, i need distractions, same as anyone
Anon.
If you have a mental breakdown when being in nature and seeing a clear starry sky, you need help. People have hobbies and distractions of course, but if you cannot handle simple life without constant entertainment media distractions, then there is something wrong with you. Its like a kid losing their mind without TikTok for few days. You have a problem you are trying to avoid. Try writing a journal about your feelings at least rather than escaping them or bottling them. Otherwise you snap.

>>
>>739107471
Try writing or doing something creative.
Needing a bright screen in front of you for constant dopamine and distraction isn't good and kills all creative potential you have.
Not being able to appreciate nature's beauty without having a mental breakdown isn't normal. I have survived easily without socializing and digital media over a week.
Nobody is saying you have to just sit still doing nothing, but the problem is that you(?) said you would have hellish existential thoughts plague your mind if you didn't have vidya and digital media with you all the time.
It is very zoomer and growing with smartphones kind of attitude and worldview if you genuinely cannot live without nonstop daily digital distractions. My grandpa spent month easily without internet in the cabin fishing and doing carpentry. He didn't even have a radio. I have done personally hiking alone, not for a month or a week but for few days and had my phone only for emergency calls.
Its not some impossible challenge, you don't seem to trust your own mental fortitude even a bit. Which is strange.
>>
>>739107857
>Try writing or doing something creative
which would be distractions, what difference is there what it is exactly? vidya just better at it
i never said i need a screen in front of me, i can and did spend months with just reading books, for example, i love reading books
but nothing but nature and stars? you'd be climbing walls in a week

How can you tell who is a neet, overweight or who "haven't left their room in two weeks"?
If you can do that, you need to write a phychology paper about it. Doctors have been trying to conclude personal traits with a 100% accuracy for centuries and it seems you have the answer.
That is unless, you're just projecting out of some sort of pre-existing bias of course.
