Does anyone have a consistent setup for dismantling the tanks in stage 3 of garegga? With my current route I enter stage 6 with 3 lives and 20% rank with Gain, I assume thats fine, but if I can pick up a few extra bombs that'd be really helpful. Unfortunately the route is not consistent enough yet to post, I'll do that in a few days I guess.

I swear my dad had this game for PC back in 1996, despite the fact that I don't think it actually came out for PC. It looks exactly the same and it was on the same computer that I played Chip's Challenge and Microman. I wonder if his army buddies found some way to emulate it back then..

Going to arcades in NYC usually led to you getting beat up buy a Puerto Rican kid when you beat them in a fighting game especially if you threw them. Throwing was frowned upon and if you did it you had to stop and let the other player get a "throw back". In retrospect I really have no idea what that was a thing since throwing is integral for high level play

literal semantics. Arcade game is a great genre descriptor for what you would call "a game with arcade sensibilities". No one has time to be saying all that garbage. How would you categorize these games then? Obviously they are indie games, but is the actual genre "indie game with arcade sensibilities"??? Like this is actually so petty over nothing.

If I play arcade games on my home computer through MAME do they cease to be arcade games
If I decompile an arcade game and port it to PC does it cease to be an arcade game
If I create a 1:1 remake of an arcade game is that too much of a ship of theseus for you to still call it an arcade game
Yes, I know what you'll say. All that matters is whether the game released in arcades. What I'm trying to tell you is that your semantics seem largely meaningless

>If I play arcade games on my home computer through MAME do they cease to be arcade games

Nope. It originated in an arcade.
>If I create a 1:1 remake of an arcade game is that too much of a ship of theseus for you to still call it an arcade game
If it's absolutely 1:1, with zero differences whatsoever, right down to the binary code, then it could arguably be considered an arcade game. A needless port, though, since it it changed ANYTHING-- including framerate-- it could no longer be considered arcade.
>Yes, I know what you'll say. All that matters is whether the game released in arcades. What I'm trying to tell you is that your semantics seem largely meaningless

Annalynn is much closer to your "real" arcade games than it is Celeste or Super Meat Boy on almost every single level excluding the fact that it was released on Steam. You care less about the actual content of the game and more about how it was released. I completely understand your point I just genuinely find it stupid and antiquated
>>
>>739088104
But people sure as hell know what I mean when I call a steam game an "arcade game." "metroidvania" is a stupid genre name too but people know what it refers to. I understand that this line of thinking can eventually lead to accepting stupid shit like terms designed to skate around algorithmic censorship as proper language, but I think adapting the term "arcade game" to describe games that are explicitly designed like arcade games is, for language, a pretty inoffensive grey area. which is why you seem sort of silly to me

Your resources in psikyo games are all frontloaded onto the first life. In 1-alls its kinda not a big issue, but don't expect to do ANY panic bombing. You have a ton of extra bombs but use this pre-emptively if you fall off route, hero dodging will likely end badly. If something feels sketchy there's probably a setup or technique to make it really consistent. I've never felt like I've unfairly died in one of their games.

yes, it was a golden age in which they didn't resort to all kinds of psychological tricks, they just tried to make games everybody wanted to make

>>
>>739109665
they wanted to make money out of you, if you didn't play they didn't get the money, so they made the game as addicting and "unfair" as possible whilst having the carrot and stick approach, the real peak was during ps1, xbox and n64 era.

Some, like picrel, do out of the box; others need IR trackers.
>>
>>739115417
nice breadbox
>>
>>739112945
>So are lightguns plug and play with something like MAME? Will they even work on an LCD
On everything BUT MAME, yes. All PC lightguns are just an absolute cursor. MAME has a significant issue with reconciling an absolute cursor with a differing aspect ratio (most games are 4:3, most screens now are 16:9), and so you either have to buy a lightgun with its own "MAME mode", or just use libretro which sanitises MAME's dogshit input handling. Seriously, no other emulator is this bad. It's like they built the input handling 25 years ago and went "eh, good enough, why would anyone ever want to play a game at a differing aspect ratio to their screen lol".

As for if light guns will work on an LCD, none of the old CRT guns do, you need to adopt a different kind of tech. All of them have flaws.
>>
>>739080828
>imagine if I could play this in my room for free while smoking weed
I wasn't around for real arcades but this is how I felt about pcs, especially seeing zoomers romanticize the mythical "family computer". Yeah, it was great coming home to see what's new on the forums to find mom locked into a percocet fueled bejeweled sesh, then she gets off just in time for dad to hop on and browse boat motors he won't buy. "Sorry guys, maybe I'll get you my chapter of our shared erotic zelda fanfic tomorrow some time", young anon sent telepathically to the 35 year old weirdos somewhere in the internet.
>>
>>739116421
the magic of PC's is that they work
the issue with arcades is that they need constant maintenance
I'm with OP because there enough losers who bought a cabinet at "a fair price" only to have a piece of junk they can't repair and know nobody to do it
if they have the character and money and chops it's really rewarding, just like with pinball or boats (like you rightly mention), otherwise it's just a sucker being scammed
awareness is alright, arcade cabinets (and pinball and boats) were made to last long and be easily repaired BY SOMEBODY SKILLED

>there are people playing shmups using a d-pad. thats a scary thought

>>739117701
that anon is right, there is a big issue because many shmups and other arcade games (pacman, most notoriously) had gates that prevented you to be up+left or up+right etc. so when u use a d-pad and switch from up to left, the character just freezes in place, the system thinking it's an error

And when you hit Continue, in 99.9% of arcade games, your score gets wiped to zero. Game actually ended on the Continue screen. Everything after that is just practice. You play for score, or for that 1CC, not just to see the credits roll.
>>
>>739139845
No it doesnt. they just add a 1 to the end. your first coin score will be 1000, and then if you continue your score will be 1001, and then 1002 and so on. This is so at the end when you see your score you can see how many continues it took

You dont know anything but here have some kino machines. This game is in an older style with modern comforts and it rocks. This genre is in its second golden age imo with the amount of new companies there are and just how neat all the presentation is and gimmicks fitted in as well as the huge amount of resources for modding, im eatin good

While the same ideas of making shots on machines carries over to all of em that also means your skills carry over too, however all machines play different and you got to adjust. Its like how music games all have the same skills of timing button presses in various schemes.
>mash buttons
Git gud, if you are one of those plebs that thinks its all random you are wrong. Physics be a cruel mistress sometimes but you can control the game more than you think, learn how to nudge, slap save, post pass, if you arent working around the tilt bob inside the machine you are gonna get shit stomped and wonder where it all went wrong. Also anon ALL ARCADE GAMES ARE PRESENTATIONS AND GIMMICKS, NEWS FLASH.

For those who've played both the emulated version and the real hardware version of any particular game, have you ever come across a noticeable difference in one version that you've never encountered in the other? Slowdowns are a pretty common difference, but any bugs or other quirks?

It was ACTUALLY developed on a PC, then ported to an arcade cabinet. All arcade games are PC ports.

I remember when there were still arcade machines at restaurants when I was a kid. My favorites were galaga and pole position at an old fuddruckers, arctic thunder at chuck e cheese, and ms pacman at a local pizza place. I went to a round1 recently and it was all phoneslop and gambling games. Not a single arcade machine in sight. So depressing.

BL has autobomb but you don't use it because it rapes your hyper stock and scoring
>>
Boghog and his cronies need to quit stroking their dicks to the notion that the first two stages of arcade games are "free" and "for beginners". It's up there with "arcade games are quarter munchers" when it comes to dishonesty, and it's so easy to spot a fag who plays for survival when they say that.

I'm just saying if you're going to give the other guy such a hard time for using arcade games to define a genre, your entire argument can be dismantled by being pedantic as well.
All arcade games are PC games. They were first played on PC, they were made on PC they are PC games.
Using the term arcade games to define the genre is fine, you're being an asshat.
>>
>>739170416
Guess that means all card games are PC games, since they were graphically designed on a PC before being released to the public in paper form.

Modern card games, you fucking retard.
They're all likely playtested on PC before being mass-produced in printed form, as well.
Fucking retard.
