I like it when fictional worlds are vague and mysterious and just leave lots of clues for you to speculate on, because when someone actually writes out how everything works, it usually turns out kind of boring. It's similar in principle to 'don't show the monster'.
Instead of there just being one version of events that some will like and some won't, everybody can form their own opinions and often come up with whatever they personally find the most interesting. Or one person comes up with a theory that a lot of people like, but nothing is set in stone so you can accept it or not. Generally, the more that is left up to imagination, the better (with a limit, of course).

Actually, it just might. The problem is the majority of the world building is intentionally kept away from the audience, leaving only bits and pieces that can be fit together and enough of the layout of the world to suggest at an actual cohesive idea behind it all. Or it could just all be made up on the fly with no further thought, and any sense of actual world building is just the audience's own delusion to make sense of what they are experiencing.

That is exactly what makes DaS have the best worldbuilding.

Xenoblade 2. I can actually tell you every nation of the game's political structure, industries, major imports/exports, affiliations, culture (cuisine, arts, writings, etc.) general history, etc. It's crazy how much more polished and detailed the worldbuilding is than Xenoblade 1.

I must say I really do hate how a good "story" in a game is conflated with cool concept or edgy ideas (see any shitty indie rpg sucked off by the masses) or with System Shock 2 readable notes that explain that tells you some minor trivia you could come up with in one brainstorm session

DS1 is pretty solid in lore and world building. You can piece together everything into a coherent narrative from item descriptions and dialog. Everything since has been nonsense and zanzibart meme tier garbage. they dont even try to make sense. ER is worst offender. there isnt a single person that can tell you what hte game is about or explain anything without making shit up to fill in gaps.

>>739092635
>>739093425
The Zanzibart shit in From games does get old but I'd still rather have that than a Borderlands tier story lmao

A lot of people say these open world games like RDR2 are living and breathing, but I never understood that. They look pretty enough I guess, but when you try to have contact with them the illusion shatters. Whereas in NuVegas you can initiate a meaningful conversation with basically every single NPC, and the game is also able to account for every single one of your choices. Makes the world feel so well fleshed out despite the game looking like ass.

Morrowind is the only game that's made me interested enough in the lore and world to go and seek out extracurricular discussion and even podcasts about it
more commonly lore and pretty much all non-essential dialogue in games comes off as so obviously contrived to fill in the required backdrop for the game they wanted to make I can't muster up the energy to even begin to pay attention to it

borderlands story isn't the problem. its the dialogue and charactrs

giants escaped the undead curse by becoming trees when they die. DS2 expands on this.

The video game with the best world building doesn't even come close to the most basic fantasy novels.
Hence why the Witcher games are so popular.

The arch trees being giants from a past cycle is a neat theory but is there really any proof other than that some giants in DS2 turned into trees after dying? The trees they turn into aren't even really that big and we see normal hollows turning into trees in DS3 too. I guess maybe the Age of Dark could just last long enough for them to grow to the size of the arch trees. I do kinda like this theory actually I guess.

Movie game fags seething over GAMES that put the GAME front and center instead of showing them 50 hours of cutscenes with 50 more hours of walking while being force fed exposition followed by 30 minutes of "gameplay" they set to "Story Difficulty". Call Fromsoft games good, call them bad, but you cant say is that gameplay isnt at the forefront of all their games.
>>
>>739099707
>The trees they turn into aren't even really that big
the DS2 giants are golems with giant souls because they tried that too to break the cycle. the real giant bodies turned into big ass trees. it's why vendrick studied giants, they had developed numerous esoteric methods to combat the curse.

Crimson Desert's pretty good.
