I was shocked so hard at seeing GTA5's full sale numbers to date. WTF caused it to sell so much. What kind of person is ten times more likely to buy it compared to rival popular franchises? By IV it had completely taken over the series, but that game at least had some good core mechanics to fuck around with and good expansions. V, on the other hand, dumbed down everything in the pursuit in graphics. Worse physics, worse AI, worse controls, worse driving, worse gunplay, but hey it looks great and the world is detailed and the missions have such epic setpieces and there's so much fucking content! The vast majority of it is rubbish, like nobody really wants to play golf or tennis or do virtual yoga or move crates or tow cars in a crime sandbox game, but we'll make you do it in the main campaign anyway because we spent so much time and money on all this bullshit the game didn't need!So yeah, disappointing novelty is an apt description of both V and RDR2. The latter is a lot more focused in comparison to V's "everything but the kitchen sink" design philosophy, but it's still not a particularly fun game. It's still awkward to control, full of weird shallow mechanics and shitty missions. Shamus Young once described it as playing as a stuntman that isn't allowed to read the script, and that sounds about right.
