Had a great thread about this not too long ago, let's get another one going. Anon recommended Pic related to me last time, so now I am recommending it to you. Post your hidden gems.

You can pretty safely say it has already escaped velocity at that point. Sweet spot is sub 100 at the most if you don't want something to be ruined. Which is funny if you think about it because if the game is good you want the dev to profit from it

Cepheus Protocol.
Its an RTS along the lines of Men of War, but you have to contain a zombie outbreak on a real time overworld map where you have to make supply lines to rearm your guys, quarantine areas for checking civilians, your own checkpoints and outfit crews to send out to hunt down patient zero before zombies start to evolve.

The UI is jank as fuck but its pretty great.

We have dedicated threads for it multiple times a month, it's almost to 3000 reviews. Stop starting these threads with bait, we have plenty of games to discuss without doing so.

I'll shill A Song of Sunlight. It's 80% depressing visual novel, 20% 2D souls-ish turn-based combat against BLAME!-inspired raptor machines exploring an oppressively large megastructure beneath your town.
I said the combat is turn-based, but there's heavy real time elements and a positioning system. You've got maybe 2 seconds to decide your move or else you're forced to defend. All attacks from all parties have a timed element, basically a simple QTE with one or more optional inputs to alter stamina/health/position changes. It seems like an odd choice for combat at first, but it keeps growing and when it eventually starts to challenge you it feels like a real-time game where you're gasping for air and trying to pull off a protracted battle using only muscle memory.
The story is the bulk of the content and while it appears slow at first, it's mostly gearing up to become a slow descent where everything becomes awful and everyone is miserable. It's only up to Chapter 2 so far, where 3 will probably be the climax and 4 will be falling action/epilogue.

The biggest diservice to games like this and Stolen Realm, Bloodlines and Tavern Keeper is that they are using store bought assets for the aesthetic. If they had their own assets and art direction they would go a lot farther. They just look cheap as fuck when you see its the exact same player models and armours used in a bunch of different games that have nothing to do with eachohter.

I love SR, I really do, its a perfect "get some friends together for a night and play an RPG where you can make progress in one sitting" game, but the devs are fucking retarded and I hope they take the backlash from the 100 Stolen Realm players to heart. Do a sequel or do DLC, who the fuck wants to play a survivor like thats using store assets, thats fucking insane. They made something great and decided to try and move onto something that is a bygone fad, with STORE ASSETS.

If they made a sequel that didnt have store assets it would probably do very well, its the kind of game I wish there was more of.

Why did it fail /v/?

Why did it fail to jump off despite having everything going for it?

>1.7 million views from a popular youtuber reggie for free advertisement
>Over 30k copies sold or more
>Unique artstyle and gameplay
>Good concept with scalability

Why does a piece of garbage game like lethal company succeed yet this doesnt despite it being the objectively better game.

Just goes to show you can have a very good concept, execute the artstyle and coding perfectly but will still die even IF tens of thousands of people buy it it can still fail.

Your game doesn't really seem comparable to a friendslop type of game like Lethal Company. There's too many choices in the current year, if you want your MP game to have longevity you need to account for loss of interest from a big part of the community over time. Also this seems to be pretty much DarkRP: The Game, so I assume it also failed because of powertripping admins.

There's basically the Steam where you can discover things easily and some gems with a little bit of digging (interactive recommender in Steam Labs for example) and then there's the Shadow Realm where people won't ever find your shit.

Games need to hit a critical mass to get picked up into things like Steam offering your game as a Daily Deal or recommending it to people. The vast majority of games (70% or more) don't even make the $100 platform fee back. One of the big problems is the flood of people making the absolute lowest effort bottom of the barrel shit because they just want to roll dice in a casino at maybe their $1000 game gets picked up and makes $5k. Mobile games have had that problem for almost two decades now.
>>
>>739140262
Calling yourself a gamedev when you've made a visual novel is like someone calling themselves a chef after they microwaved a store-bought pizza
>>
>>739140440
Some of the low effort ones can certainly be like that, especially if you're using an out of the box engine like RenPy where you just plug in assets. I made mine in Unity with some of the backbone systems purchased from the Unity Asset Store, but it wasn't at all a simple or easy process to turn those pieces into a game.

I enjoyed it. Most of the replayability comes from what characters/items you get. Some enemies and bosses can use moves that either move a character left or right, which can result in either nothing happening or a party member getting killed. Silly and difficult puzzle platformer with lots of secrets. Allows save stating everywhere, which helps a ton with precise sequences but if you're a completionist, you'll need to learn to do the brutal bits without them eventually

I don't know how this is still under 1k, even adding in the delisted Carpe Fulgur version. Old 2D action RPG with surprisingly competent combat and enemy AI, expect spacing and antiairs. Dungeon exploration's pretty good too.

Short, low budget 3D platformer with surprisingly good exploration and movement.

Only thing I wished the game had more of was encounter with things that talk. The ferryman was great, but kind of the only time.

Idiot savant. How else did he find such a cute pet worm?

I love NJ sense of scale. Even if it isn't open per se, you can reach a lot of distant places you'd assume are unreachable at first glance.

Poke All Toads was fantastic. I know the guy is from here and doesn't need my help shilling but I'll shill it all the same.

He announced upcoming content updates and gave this little preview. So something is in the works.

#1 rule of steam reviews:

Never, ever, listen to the ones where people are whining about difficulty.
>>
There are no hidden gems, anything actually good and not just "autist good" which is actually just shit, will be relatively well known and lauded to anyone who pays any attention to video games.
>>

pathetic little mainstreamer is seething. the only thing he's capable of is doing what he's told. He couldn't figure out what games are good on his own no matter how hard he tried and now he just seethes inside.

FUCKING FREAK ALERT.

unfortunately the game really shits the bed in the last 20%. really enjoyed it up until that point, even if it was mostly for atmosphere.

to be a true gemologist you have to be watching the steam new queue and trying out demos and new releases constantly.

How do you ever expect to find anything if you're not even looking?

Liberty Belle looks cute. Might give it a whirl.

I'll get around to it eventually. I have lots of games to play.

Reviews whining about difficulty are pretty valuable. If I see them I know the game's actually challenging, easily makes me want to buy it more.

My lazier method in recent years had been to filter to current year on backloggd and sort by rating. Has the added benefit of catching non-steam games and romhacks, too.
Unfortunately they started displaying weighted ratings for low review count games and I don't know of a way to disable that, so you no longer get obscure games two people played padding out the top rows of 5 star games.

i loved this one. super comfy time, really recommend it.

Yeah, but that's not listening to them, that's ignoring them. You are doing the opposite of what they said.

So how good is Vultures? The demo was fine but it needed some spice, too easy to ram zombie into walls and stunlock them

The book of Buja demo was an excellent zelda-like, starts off with you having this weird ability to see people's last moments before you die and you go back in time and see the Queen talking to no one before she is slain but she's obviously talking to you because she knows about your ability for some reason and she warns you of a danger and the danger is clearly the castle council and then you immediately get locked out of the castle and told to "figure it out and save me". It was good, insta-wishlist.

It's decently long, but yeah they haven't challenged me so far I am pretty good at curbstomping them and not receiving hits at all. But maybe it will get harder? I'm only halfway through.
>>
How's Sektori? Not a hidden gem anymore maybe, but first time I heard about it was today.

So worth the price?
>>
>>739154408
I suppose so. It's not good enough that I would go around randomly bringing it up to people who haven't asked, but if someone does ask me specifically about it, I wouldn't tell them it was a bad game.

Plenty of games are just average.

Awaken: Astral Blade. I found this game recently looking for Metroidvanias. It has an interesting and satisfying combat system, beautiful artstyle and some cool boss designs. Overall solid 8/10.
