Why did it have no staying power? it's easily the best first party release with the most content.
>>
>>739139543
It does though. There are special online events that happen frequently. I’ve played each event and there are always others playing too. Outside of events though, it’s pretty much dead.
>>
This game's existence is beyond baffling. Nobody even cared about the first one outside of “that game you rented for a weekend” or “your cousin happened to have it and you messed around for a few hours”
>>
>>739139701
I mean singleplayer wise it has a lot of content, I don't play online. I'm surprised to see the game hardly ever be brought up by anyone, on this board or otherwise. The game reminds me a lot of Diddy Kong Racing, and I've seen that be pretty popular lately. Sometimes I wonder if people thumping retro games and negging modern games is essentially a cancer or scourge.

It's true though, instead of silver coins there's hundreds of varied challenge objectives and a replayable storymode.
>>
I 100% it, got rainbow rank in all modes (except top ride because of horrid queue times and the mode just isn't fun to grind), and I do all the events. It does kinda suck how much Sakurai really pushed the idea that this game would basically get no support after launch. It's a finished game and I enjoyed my lengthy time with it but I could never see myself playing it consistently for the years to come.
>>
>>739139543
It's not what I expected,it's fine I mean but I expected like an F-Zero Mario kart since I didn't play the og and instead it's ... Kirby Air Riders, whatever that is.

Samurai is just that influential at Nintendo. He could demand a sequel to a game nobody fucking cared about, and they had to make it for him. I respect it. Imagine having that much power. I'm jelly.
>>
>>739139543
I commend them for releasing a full-ass game and calling it there, but for a title that is primarily made to be played online you want some kind of post-launch support. New tracks, characters, even just for a year or two to keep people talking about it and coming back.

Because Kirby Air Ride was a flawed game, kept alive by people who only played it alone as a kid, and imagined how much better it could be if anyone actually played it.
Now they have people to play it with, and the flaws are staring them in the face.

I had this same realization when I played the gamecube one's multuplayer servers a few years back. The game doesn't hold up to actually being played, only the imagination of how good it could be.
That the only real game mode was City Trial wasn't an underground hidden gem, it was a dead canary in a room nobody noticed. The fundamental racing mechanics are too shallow, every single map has a machine that just wins on it.

Always said it would die extremely fast since Sakurai killed it at release by saying no dlc or content update. Who doesn't want missing characters? More tracks?
Sure you may have a great single player game already but if you don't have close friends or family to play with, online will not last you long before most people are bored and online empties.
Not like it was that big of a surprise anyway, the original game on GC wasn't for everyone and I still don't understand how this sequel managed to gather so much noise despite being the same GC game that only a few people liked +more shit (which is fine).
Will probably buy in the future anyway since I love the GC one and wouldn't mind playing through this one with more content.

What was Nintendo thinking releasing two casual racing games back to back like that?
>>
I still play it every now and then, along with Mario Kart and my switch 1 online go tos. It’s fantastic, but the “content” is overrated. The singleplayer is too long and starts too slow to be replayed after the unlocks, and top ride and even air ride aren’t worth playing on their own. Air Ride always ends with everyone neck and neck because the catch up mechanics are too strong. Top Ride needed to be a stadium event. And even then, Air Ride shows up way too infrequently, which is lame, as it’s the most fun one to demonstrate your OP builds on

>>
>>739147837
This game was Sakurai’s request first and foremost. Nintendo wanted Sakurai to lead another very obvious game but he said he’d only do it if he could make whatever he wants first, so we got this and it released in the first 6 months.

When it's left to die at release while missing CORE characters, yeah, it's a bad thing.
Instead of letting devs giving you a middle finger and you taking it up your ass, you should demand more content (free or, as a last resort, paid) for the games you pay full price.

>most content
The majority of its content is shallow. Air Ride is just okay. Top Ride had no reason to come back and it's baffling to have Air Ride get old tracks, but not Top Ride if they were going to bother. Road Trip is yet another glorified event match slog by Sakurai held together by cutscenes. Despite the very detailed machine customization, there is very little rider customization. Most get one red/black or monochrome alt at best while the store barely has any interesting hats or outfits. The last update fucked up the machine store so now nobody gets to be popular since sortinf by price just puts Formula Stars at the top. The events have dogshit prizes not worth participating for (a hat is the best thing you can get and they're reserved for seasonal gaps while most of the crap is worthless license shit). Not only that, but the gimmicks are uninspired. 90% of the events are either [character] has buffed stats or everyone gets increased star slide.
The fanbase for the original was already pretty niche so City Trial wasn't going to save everything. Ranked is pretty dead for all modes. If you want consistent trials, it's better to join a paddock and those can be a mixed bag since the absolute worst wi-fi connections can join. The fucking /v/ padlocks weren't free from that shit.
>>
>>739149085
If it's enough to make it worth, sure, would buy if it has more 64 content. But there's a lot more characters in the franchise that got left behind and would've been cool to see in a future dlc.

Air Riders costs more money than a somewhat subpar Kirby platformer with DLC updates that cost nothing extra AND actually added fan favorites. The fact we were told no DLC for the former should be perceived as nothing short of a scam, but I'm guessing you magically think it's OK because Daddy Sakurai said so.

I really wish they had given it the Smash treatment and remixed a large variety of tracks from throughout the Kirby series to serve as a “museum” of sorts for Kirby…..and that they had actually gotten Ishikawa and Ando on the game

nta but mass attack, epic yarn, rainbow curse, star allies and forgotten land didn't get playable characters
it's also weird that we got another waddle dee with a generic speed special instead of another popular helper or miniboss from super star like gim, bugzzy, or simirror
>>
>>739149492
Star Allies needing to go on a nostalgia slop redemption tour to try to pull itself up from the bottom run of kirby platformers doesn't make it something worth emulating. The demo for Ari Riders alone was more fun than the entirety of that game, dlc and all
>>
It was pretty stupid to bring back the old mals for air ride mode but not for top ride or city trial

>>
>>739149603
I've touched the full game of Air Riders through GameShare and I can assure you that's bullshit. Air Riders has way too erratic a pace for Kirby standards, which is salt in the wound a game already being too Sakurai oriented.
>>
>>739149916
Doing justice to a franchise and its fans would be releasing a quality game, which Star Allies did not. Throwing in a bunch of tacked on bullshit later on does not remedy that, but thanks for admitting you’re retarded
>>739149941
Star Allies is a fucking bore where the AI rushes to do everything in the level before you even get the chance. Thinking something being too “erratic” is worse than that is ridiculous

Please tell me you're not actually trying to argue that Air Riders has more value in its current state than it would if it actually had what Star Allies offered. You don't need to look that dense.

Been playing to complete the checklist lately. Any easy way to beat Gigantes in 1:45? Or do I have to get lucky enough to get a legendary and for a CPU to get all of Gigantes? It's either that or teaming with my friends at some point to do it as a stadium so we can all get it, it's one of two I have left (the other being 2 pillars during that field event, I thought I could cheese it by having one CPU in the game but then only one spawned in the map and I was pissed).
Tempted to just use my checkmarks on that one since I haven't used any of them yet. Online ones I'll also save for when I can play with friends
>>
>>739152238
Just do VS Gigantes in Stadium with one max handicap CPU. Gigantes' HP scales with players.
>pick a character with high attack
>pick Shadow Star
>prioritize meteors for eye and back thrusters
Alternatively, just set Gigantes as player 2 so it won't move
>>
The fact that people put over 100 hours into this game is insane to me, I played two hours of it and all during my whole playtime all I could think was "wow this plays like crap, I rather being playing mario kart world"

The whole appeal is doing the content over and over to fill the checklist, like Smash Bros. But I feel it's more fun with Air Riders than OG Air Ride because there's characters and skins to unlock and it has more tracks since it has all the original ones plus 9 new ones
>>739152695
Thanks. I tried it late last night but I guess my settings weren't great (every CPU level 9, CPU with Gigantes was max handicap level 1). I'll give it a shot with those settings and Meta Knight or Knuckle Joe

People are too retarded to notice that Air Ride mode is god tier because they have only tried basic machines like Wheelie Scooter or Wagon and the loudest fans almost only talk about City Trial. Once you master their different playstyle riding a flying machine on their good tracks is like crack. Transform, Shadow and Slick are crazy in the hands of a good player. The mode has a surprising amount of depth and I wish more people would notice. Haven't liked a racer this much since Crash Team Racing.

It could've been a bigger hit at $40 digital, but it launched before Nintendo pulled back on game prices. The original was one of my fav games to play with friends, so it's not like I can't appreciate a sequel. There's a lot of love in it, like the my machines and music. But the game only having one city trial map and only 9 new tracks makes it almost impossible to recommend at a premium price. City Trial is still great but the game isn't close to $70 great. I really hope we get to hear the behind the scenes on this game's development at some point like Sakurai's other games, seeing as it took 3.5 years of active development. That's longer than the active dev cycle of any of Sakurai's other games, not counting post launch DLC for Smash, and the game still felt light. Despite all that time, he flat out said they didn't have the resources to bring back City Trial's original map. Was the core team just that small or did some shit go awry? Wonder how much he made from it

Retard, Jet Star got borderline dumpstered by its latest nerfs while Bull Tank has never been top tier. Killing enemies for speed is barely relevant in online races and they don't even spawn in Free Run, the most competitive of the record modes.

>>739153305
I agree that the new tracks are worse (especially Galactic Nova's horribly long rails, hate that shit) but the only high base speed machine that's really good right now is Rex. Most of the best machines both for records and races have high handling and middling speed. The boost pad change lets flying machines grab boosts by gliding low, that's way more skillful than pushing them.
>>
I think it has enough characters and maps, I wouldn't know what else to ask for. If anything, Mario Kart World should add some Kirby tracks.

I'm one of the psychos that liked Air Ride more than City Trial. And Sakurai fucked up flying with the Wing Star, which was my favorite thing in Air Ride. I wound up not getting Air Riders after the testride because of it.

>nobody plays Air Ride despite the improvements and amount of tracks, plus it being the mode where character abilities and specials can shine
>Top Ride was made objectively worse: absolute clusterfuck where you have even less control of the outcome
>ONE map for City Trial as if the new map isn't a bunch of flat nothing with little corners
>manages to still feel tiny because of the increased game speed and how 5+ speed patches will launch you to the opposite side in 2 seconds
>the majority of matches come down to the same 2 strategies unless you get a hardpicked stadium at the start: find a chariot and build offense or fight for the legendary parts until someone forms one and wins
>worthless "story" mode that even resorts to recycling fucking cutscenes halfway through made just to jerk off the mediocre boss battles you won't even choose to do in City Trial because all you do is spin spam until they fuck off to another part of the arena

Jet was my favorite one too. It's still usable if you're good but both Winged and Paper are almost always better now.
Transform is one of the best machines in the game, it's kind of buggy so it has some janky techniques available. I don't play it much but I've seen it move like crazy in Free Run records like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD3mS8B2vmA

I know about the trick where boosts last longer in star form because of the lower acceleration, need to figure out the other techs though.

Which stars are the best for normal waddle dee currently? He's the character I play the most.
>>
>>739147359
all it would need is the original city trial map but they did say it was scrapped due to scaling issues it would have been a clusterfuck if they did a 1:1 replica and supposedly anything larger just made it awkward to play in honestly they should've toned down the number of players 16 is absolutely both fucking bonkers and unnessecary considering the scope of the game 8 is the sweet spot 12 would've been pushing it but okay

Waddle Dee is pretty good for riding heavy machines. Rex Wheelie is the best one out of that group, last patch's buffs made it very strong. Bulk Star and Bull Tank are good too. He's also a solid rider for Formula, Rocket and flying machines, but Cappy is considered superior for those.
>>
>>739155491
Wish cappy wasn't basically just better waddle dee. How do I git gud with rex wheelie, I always find bulk star easier to use when it comes to heavier machines.
>>
>>739155624
I almost only play flying machines so I don't really know. You can look up Youtube for nip gameplay (search カービィのエアライダー レックスウィリー for JP Rex stuff, I found this guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsIFyfDN7X4) or watch Free Run records on Speedrider (https://speedrider.coresv.net/records?main_mode_id=1&sub_mode_id=2).

Most Nintendo casuals never gave it a chance and won't ever forgive it due to the sin of Sakurai "wasting his time" on it when he could've been working on Smash 6 instead.

I'm tired of this braindead retard take
sakurai is an autistic perfectionist who grinds the actual GAMEPLAY to the bone, and that means for a map centered around the mode EVERYTHING is fine tuned
every piece of geometry, the rate and locations of items spawns, all the different events, all of it was immaculately designed so that the GAME itself flows and behaves exactly how he wants it to
creamed
braindead retarded nigger gamers like (You) who know nothing about game development or game design go DURRR WHY NO 2MAP because all you fucking troglodytes care about is having different visuals and have no idea of the extreme amount of effort and fine tuning it takes to create a map for a mode like city trial

every time I post a webm of me actually PLAYING the fucking game I get spammed with replies from low iq niggers who are literally too black to even understand the gameplay and dismiss it as le oomer adhd shit (another trait of niggers: regurgitating forced reddit memes)

People still play it, but judging by the dropoff of this game as well as MKW and Sonic Crossworlds, I'm pretty sure people are getting tired of racing games. Either that, or having 3 racing games release so close to each other probably wasn't a good idea.

I think CrossWorlds is mainly a "festivals only" kind of game for anons here, since early on most people played it so much they got burnt out (and mods started deleting the threads back then so they want to be a bit more scarce with them). MKW still gets /v/kends but I hear the threads are slow, so maybe it is racing game fatigue

Waggling the joystick instead of assigning it a button is a dumb fuck choice. Waggling the joystick feels wrong because it never naturally happens when you play a game.
>>
>>739139543
It has no content.
For a $70 videogame it should have at least double the race tracks and 5 City Trial Maps. Sakurai acts like his shit is one-man indie projects on a shoestring budget but it needed more.
>>
>>739139543
Life bars should have been the default in Air Ride. Otherwise it becomes the Rick and Taranza show.
>>
>>739139543
>Why did it have no staying power?
What do you mean? It's a game. People play games for a bit, then they get bored and move on to something else. I don't see how this is particularly surprising, especially for a rather niche series. Not everyone dedicates autistic amounts of time to a game.
Also the game in general doesn't quite click with me in quite the same was as the original did, for reasons I can't fully explain. I think it might be the hollow Smash-esque sound design; it doesn't really feel satisfying to collect power ups since they don't have that juicy techno SFX and instead have the hollow Smash/KIU-style sound design which I hate. Plus Skyah doesn't quite resonate with me in the way the City does.
>>
I don't know. City Trial is one of the most fun game modes to have ever existed in multiplayer and my friends refuse to play it with me.
>>
>>739157996
I agree completely, but to play devil's advocate the bare minimum amount; they remade all the Air Ride tracks, so it's kinda odd to see they didn't remake the City Trial maps.

To be fair, Nintendo did have Gambarion do JUS on the DS. With how much buddy-buddy Nintendo and Bamco have been lately, I'm surprised they haven't revisited the idea. Then again, Gambarion's busy with Gekishin Squadra at the moment.

Isnt it seperated by NA and Japanese servers in match making? Its still a top 30 seller in japan physically so you'd think an occasional full game is reasonable`
>>
>>739139926
>Nobody even cared about the first one outside of “that game you rented for a weekend” or “your cousin happened to have it and you messed around for a few hours”
Wouldn't that imply that someone cared enough to be the cousin who had the game in the first place?
>>
>>739157996
This is a thread about questionable longevity. Unfortunately, human monkey brain likes having different visuals to simply give the illusion of variety even if it's all the same under the hood.
You want people to stick to the game longer, you give them their repainted maps.
>>
I pray that some of you are here this friday to make a proper lobby.

it's actually really simple, nintendo bought kirby off of HAL/warpstar so they were actually excited to use him since they fully own Kirby now and get to rake in all the profits from any successful Kirby things

$70 for a sequel to a mediocre GC game nobody played for more then an hour other then the novelty of “oh a Kirby racing game, that’s kinda neat”

The hype is only carried by the fact that Sakurai directed it and it’s doing very well in Japan but other then that, it’s kind of a flop.

Seems like a decent amount of us in this thread, why don't we all try to get a paddock going in a few hours when it's daytime in burgerland?
