Why does the Metroid franchise continuously fail to resonate with gamers?
>>739143912It's just not that special anymore. Metroidvanias are a dime a dozen now and you can find whatever flavor you could possibly want. The lore of Metroid isn't very compelling on its own. So what else is left after that?
Not horny enough
Has any piece of advertising ever instantly obliterated all the hype for a game as much as the reveal of the NPCs did to Prime 4?
>>739143912Because Nintendo keeps giving it second-class treatment. Development hell murdered Prime 4, but look how successful and popular Dread was because Nintendo actually put effort into making sure a good team got it.
>>739143912The japanese continuously fail to resonate with the Metroid franchiseIt's a white man thing to want to explore uncharted depths and be immersedThe japanese don't care, they'll shove the feds and the space pirates and any other humanoid organisation in your face and you're going to not buy it
>>739143912Did Dread do well? I loved Dread and I don't care about the Prime series.
>>739144128Mommy Samus.
>>739143912The game was bad anon. They need to cater to the crowd that likes bad games.
>>739143912It's in a better place than it was 10 years ago.But yeah, Metroid didn't need a Prime 4, it needed a new 3D series that was more than just a metroidvania.
Nintendo could do something crazy, like hire the guys who made "Doom Eternal" to create a "Metroid Prime" focused on hardcore combat. Or hire the guys from "Silksong" and give them 8+ years to make a 2D Metroid with total creative freedom.
>>739144128Pretty much. The series is a victim of its own influence, it pretty much spawned a whole genre which has gone on to overshadow it. Metroid Prime did something original and might have been Metroid's opportunity to break out, but it was stuck on the Gamecube which just wasn't a popular system. It did well for the system, but failed to reach a wider audience because everybody was on the PS2. And nowadays the Prime formula is just a relic of a type of game that doesn't really exist anymore. You can tell with Prime 4 they don't know what to do with it in today's gaming landscape. They tried to lean on nostalgia but the moment has passed and they missed the opportunity to evolve. >>739144449It's the best selling game in the franchise, but probably only because the Switch has such a massive user base. It still sold a fraction of a game like Hollow Knight for example.
>>739144449Dread did well for a Metroid game. It's the highest selling Metroid game, beating Prime by a small amount. It was also best selling Metroid game in Japan since Super by a large margin.Prime 4 flopped.
>Metroid Prime game>No Metroid Prime
>we want 2D SM2!>uhhhhh here's the fourth FPS but we also added open world like Zelda????
>>739143912I believe this game will see a lot of love in the coming years. Right now it's easy to be disappointed because it's so by the numbers and people have access to Prime 1 remastered. The parts where the game shines are a little under baked, which serves to drive frustration in waiting 8 years for its release. What is specifically wrong with it is death by a thousand cuts; and by that I mean all the aspects of the game where it just falls shy of taking a final step toward realizing its mechanics. A huge point of contention is the inclusion of the motorbike, or rather the bolted on hubworld that is the only means the developers have utilized to justify its usage. The game could have been a lot different, and likewise the game could be roughly the same if they were willing to make sacrifices in some areas to the betterment of others. Everytime I reflect on the game I have huge "aha moments" where I recognize that this piece of design could be rearranged, rewritten, removed, and it would then prop up some other piece. Ultimately the game falls flat because everything just drags everything else down with rarely the semblance of a cohesive vision. I could list a lot of examples of this. However, as I stated I believe people will warm up to this in the near future, but it's unlikely it will ever be anyone's favorite Metroid game.
>>739144401Relatively speaking for a Metroid game it was successful. That doesn't mean it was a super successful game though. As such a legacy franchise as it is it should be expected to sell much more than it did but it didn't. RE9 had no problem pulling over 6 million in sales in just weeks. Dread sold over 3 million but over its lifespan. Even Armored Core 6, which is from a very niche series sold about as well or better than Dread.
>>739143912They made a good one (Dread) for the first time in years and it was a smash hit. They made a bad one (Prime 4) and it's already in the bargain bin, which is saying a lot for a first party Nintendo game. The problem is this: Metroid fans don't buy slop. This is intolerable for Nintendo who expect a captive audience.
>>739143912Unironically it’s the type of game tendies wouldn’t buy, put this on the PS5 and it would be universally acclaimed by Snoys
>>739144128funny thing the prime games were distinct enough to be that "other thing". there is nowhere else to get that particular experience- nowhere at all. and yet, they botched it and killed it in prime 4 to appeal to a "wider audience" who never even showed up for the game (and never would have)
>>739148386Yeah this. Metroid being stuck on Nintendo systems hurts it a lot
>>739144398Six seven!!!
release it on a platform someone gives a shit about. When you can play portal on a fuckin switch im not paying your jewish ass to hold games hostage to your pathetic shitbox.
>>739143912lack of social elements, peole want a story to be about people these days because new generations are raised with only women in the house, older generations enjoyed stories being about things and ideas because they were raised with men in the household.
>>739146320I agree, I felt the same about Prime 3, then I replayed it a few years back and loved it, although I enjoyed Prime 4 as is but I could see it's faults and I think that with a few changes the game would be significantly better. I really hope that they really were making Prime 4 and 5 back to back but that they take criticisms of 4 to heart and think about how they can improve on things.l
The only metroid that sold poorly is Prime 4.I wonder why...
>>739144398I've personally never had anything like that happen. Had a real sinking feeling with the bike reveal. Myles reveal made me nope out.
>>739144246Is the porno neon color scheme on the cover not doing it for you?
I want to play some sci-fi games with a Nintendo employee and try to convey why they were cool. Share a few beers and some snacks and try to hash out what the issue is.
Because Metroid fans like the idea of Metroid games, rather than playing them.
>>739152026I replay the Prime trilogy every year. And about every other year I've been doing a >3hr Super Metroid run
>>739143912I finally played beyond and you guys are basically all drooling retard niggerfaggots, its literally got less npcs than prime 3, the desert is fucking tiny and it takes less time to cross than fucking hyrule field, and there is 100% backtracking if you bothered to play more than the first 30 minutes of the game.
>>739151616 >He doesnt remembah him.
>>739143912I know every Nintendo series has a knuckle dragger fanbase, but the blind hype surrounding this project really cemented Prime fans as one of the dumbest. You had a game in development hell for 8 years that had to switch studios 2 years in, which put it in the hands of a studio that had been 12 years removed from Prime games when they started working on it, and was 12 years removed from their last released game at release (as well as 18 years removed from the last Prime game in the series at that point). How did anyone think this was going to be anything like the originals? I'd feel bad, but when you pointed this shit out before release, Prime fans would screech at you that it was one of the most anticipated games ever. Most of them still haven't come to terms with what happened.
>>739152026I love playing Metroid games when they actually make one, Prime 4's problem was they made a shitty Zelda game and sold it as Metroid.
>>739153004Blind hype?I don't think Metroid fans were fooled...
>>739146320>but it's unlikely it will ever be anyone's favorite Metroid game. Not favorite metroid game, but its certainly my favorite prime game. Its a scifi western, which is a massively under-served genre and helps make beyond feel entirely set apart from the other games, while corruption was basically a halo game, echoes was a horror game that wasnt scary, and prime was just a metroid perspective shift with weird controls. But I also liked red steel 2 which is apparently one of the worst things ever made, so whatever.
>>739149348to me Metroid Prime is like this whole divergence in how mainstream adventure games could have gone on to be made, and it just never happened. "3D Metroidvania" is barely even a thing despite the 2D kind being everywhere.
>>739151616It sold the same as the others but considering the user base…
>>739153231I like it more than Prime 1 and 3, but I think Prime 2 is the best, and it felt westerny I think.
>>739151739Had the exact same experienceMetroid Prime is one of my favorite games too
>>739153734I mean its got an element to it with the rivalry, I can even see dark samus being inspired by angel eyes, but samus animates like a faceless version of blondie (with hips) and even though the rivalry with sylux doesnt seem very earned in context, from the moment he shows up its got that "destined gunfight" feel, probably because they both completely ignore the chaos around them to do their draw-down.Also mackenzie reminds me of tuco if tuco was an incompetent fighter who was a nerd instead of a criminal, just the interactions between him and samus feel like tuco and blondie.
>>739146320How hard was it for them to simply make another Metroid Prime 1 only much bigger this time around since we are several generations removed from the GC days? They could have easily made Prime 4 the best one but they fumbled the ball forcing story shit and characters. Huge miss since if this was more like Prime 1 but super polished and a much larger world to explore people would have been praising this as a GOTY contender.
>>739154359A moody FPA like MP1 is not winning goty lmao.
>>739144401>Because Nintendo keeps giving it second-class treatment.Let's be fair here, Nintendo did try with Prime 4, but no publisher can afford to keep restarting development forever. At some point they had to release something, even if it wasn't the ideal game. Also, Retro may be shitting the bed lately, but Prime 4's core gameplay is still rock solid. They just need to drop the dumb attempts at handholding through NPCs and put more effort in the level design, instead of half-assing an open world where it doesn't belong.
>>739144128Prime is still unique, they just didn't make a prime game with beyond. I don't even know what they made to be honest, but it's not a metroid game>>739149348>appeal to a "wider audiencethey didn't do it for a wider audience, Tanabe's vision for metroid somehow ended up overlapping with Sakamoto's where he wanted it to be a story focused experience regarding retarded galactic federation troopers. Despite it failing the first two times (other M, federation force), he was adamant on doing it again with prime 4. Hopefully Tabata isn't as retarded.
>>7391536523D metroidvanias are hard as fuck to do compared to 2D, prime trilogy games are the only ones that are actual 3D metroidvanias, every other 3D "metroidvania" just have elements of the genre but aren't actually MVs.
It's kind of weird to me how little we have seen from the universe as a whole in Metroid.I wish we either got a second Prime Hunters or Prime 3... or something like a fight against the Kriken Empire they alluded with Trace in Hunters.
>>739154359They really should have interconnected the levels, bike or not, but I don't think removing the characters would add much. Playing Prime 2 I wished that more Luminoth were available to talk instead of just U Mos.
>>739143912Dread was just a watered down fusion with none of the things that make modern metroidvanias enjoyable to play.
>>739143912The original Prime trilogy did fine. This one's a stinker and anyone without shit taste agrees.
>>739152943Prime 4 is just mediocre. That's the truth. It got a lot of extreme visceral reactions because people waited so long for it and had big expectations, so in their disappointment made it out to be the worst thing ever, or on the flip side praised it to high heavens and back to defend their enjoyment of it. Reality is, it's not a terrible game, but it's not a great game either. It's just sort of mid. It's a decent action adventure game. But that's not really good enough after people waited 8 years since its announcement, and it's also just a dated game design that feels unimpressive in the modern gaming landscape. Anyway, yeah people over-hated on it a bit. But it isn't really that good either. If it didn't have the Prime branding and so much anticipation building up to it, it wouldn't have really generated any discourse at all because it's just unremarkable. It already seems like it's being forgotten.
>>739143912The series died with Gunpei Yokoi.
Favorite Suit?
Prime was never good, if it took you until the 4th game to realize that you're just genuinely retarded.
>>739159005Super Varia will always be my definitive image of Samus, but the Dread Varia's pretty good too
>>739143912>Why does the Metroid franchise continuously fail to resonate with gamers?Because Nintendo keeps insisting on making almost all of their new games, and Nintendo fucking sucks cocks by the boatload at 3D games.
>>739143912isn't that the bike game that looks like one of these shitty modern pokemon games
>>739143912Nintendo continuously fails to allow the series to play to its strengths in their misguided quest to push the series into the mainstream.
>>739144930>It still sold a fraction of a game like Hollow Knight for example.yeah no shit, Dread is a $60 game. Hollow Knight is an indie that sells for peanuts and is on every platform.
>>739159730Most of them sell like hotcakes though. Metroid of course being an exception.
Why the hell didn't they at least remaster 2 and 3 and then gave us a bundled collection of the three games? Would have been a great way to generate more interest for Prime 4 but instead most new fans who very likely didn't even play those Prime games will only be able to play the first game and then skip to the 4th one.
>>739157826while I think dread is mediocre, it's not a watered down fusion. It's impossible to water down fusion, dread is a better game.
I think they need to do something drastic to make it stand out from previous games. A 4th game that feels mostly similar to the old ones was never going to be a huge hit. Maybe they can go harder into horror. Like, a borderline M-rated (but not quite) Metroid game. Make Samus' suit breakable, then you're really depowered and fragile in Zero Suit mode. And you can have limited batteries for the arm cannon. Darker art direction, and enemies that are creepier and harder to kill. And Ridley could be a stalker enemy. Also I think they need to bite the bullet and let Samus talk. Even if it's just audio logs of her mission.
>>739160680Actually I take it back, if they want it to stand out and get people's attention they will actually make it fully M rated.
>>739143912Nintendo no longer knows how to publish games. They let development drag out for too long and leave gaps that are so long that the only people who even still care about the games are fanatics.AM2R built solid interest and to a lesser extent so did Dread, but that interest is gone now due to Prime 4.>>739144128Good thing that Metroid only released 1 actual non-remake Metroidvania since 2004 then.>>739153652Yes, it was the one time that Shiggy's FPS autism paid off.>>739157826It's a development checklist Metroidvania, but not really like Fusion.>>739160680I do not care for the Zero Suitanymore . It is overdone, the definition of safe horny even outside of Metroid, let Samus wear some other latex clubbing outfit.
>>739152943Correct, people probably take more offense to the levels being very straightforward though. It's impossible to really get lost.
>>739160680>>739160741Your idea for an M rated horror Metroid is decent actually. I think one of the hurdles though is they would have to change the look of the suit and also many other aspects of the designs that people have become so familiarized with. Change too much and then you get something that might not even be recognizable as a Metroid game. But change too little and its still going to look like a Metroid game only with what many might see as a shitty attempt at making it a horror game. Fusion did kind of have horror aspects to it so I do think this could work for a 3D game but I doubt they'd stick the landing tbqh. Nintendo is just not that type of company.
>>739160680Reminds me of an idea I had for Prime 4, which was when the green rain starts you have to find cover because it's 1. Acid, and 2. Spawns enemies. Could add variety, and inform the level design more. Sometimes you get to ride the bike and it feels good; because sometimes you have to duck in tunnels, walk cliff faces, ridges and gorges, and stay out of direct rain, ect.I dont think there would be much hate for the bike if the area was more interesting because of that, and the bike would be seen as a reprieve from the tension, ect.
Theres one very simple fix they could have implemented that would go a long way towards making the game better.>Have the ability to turn off mackenzie telling you where to goThis one is by far the one choice in the game that I feel is the worst ratio in terms of how easy it would be to add the ability to mute him, versus how much of a negative impact him telling me where to go when I'm driving through the desert is.They could literally add a disable button for him in the options in like an afternoon
>>739159005Light suitI actually really like the viola suit visually, if only it had a more interesting function
If your game doesnt have fan service it wont be well received.Metroid and Castlevania survive to this day on the backs of samus getting naked on death and different vampire girls showing cleavage or sexy poses. The new castlevania game by the deadcells team will fail because they have feminist interests in mind first and foremost and not gamers.
>>739157826>with none of the things that make modern metroidvanias enjoyable to play.Such as?
>>739162664>Abilities that aren't just lock&key variants of existing abilities (looking at you storm missiles)>A control scheme where you don't sacrifice accuracy of inputs for dual analog LARPing that pretends that it is better than arm pumping>A map that feels good to navigate and isn't constantly bisected by dead setpieces and turnstiles>A better save system than dropping you outside the last door you entered
Sex with balls
>>739163352Oh you made it sound like they were things that other metroidvanias do, but all of those barring the analog stick thing are in basically every metroidvania there is. For the record it looks like you're conflating checkpoints with saving when they're not the same thing
>>739143912The originals do. Modern games are made by incompetent woke retards. Simple as.
>>739160464>Switch needs more portsWhy are nutendies like this?
>>739144449>>739144930>>739144994It's also well-regarded by fans which is far more than anyone can say about Prime 4.
>>739146320>this will see alot of love in the coming yearsThe shills really are trying too hard.
>>739159730what the fuck are you talking about? if anything Metroid's problem is that Nintendo refuses to make them in house and just outsources them to teams with absolutely no credibility.
>>739165917At no point did I say you should definitely go buy and play it, by all means you should skip it, but at this level you do not belong in a thread discussing the game obviously. I could talk at length about the game in depth, and contrarily you have nothing to add to the conversation.
>>739160464Perfect timeline of events would have been a Trilogy Remaster exclusive to Switch 2, and that would buy them one more year to fix and polish Prime 4.
>>739166171The problem is that shills constantly downplay all the bad parts, acting like the game is some masterpiece being unfairly hated, when it's trash that's just wearing the face of a metroid game.
>>739162041sexo
>>739166307The problem with contrarians is they never genuinely appraise a game and pretend all games are bad except whatever their favorites are.
>>739166464If you ask someone why they dislike Prime 4, they can actually give you a list of reasons why it's bad. When you ask someone why prime 4 is a misunderstood masterpiece, it's usually "oh the game has feelings and heart and soul and it looks pretty and i cried at this one emotional part". aka non arguments.
>>739166464anon, hating MP4 is the mainstream position, you're being the contrarian here by trying to defend it.
>>739166532>Prime 4 is literally the best game ever or it's the worst game everThis is why you're ridiculous>>739166567>You HAVE to agree it's the worst game ever or you love itYou're ridiculous
>>739143912I recently started playing this to get it out of my backlog and I cannot believe how mid it has been so far. I went in with low expectations but damn, it just feels so uninspired. It's actually upsetting.>>739144128I've played tons of indie MVs but very few have captured my attention as well as 2D Metroid games. I think it has to do with the movement. The one recent exception I can think of is Silksong. Traversal alone is fun in that game.
>>739166060>Outsources them to garbage teams while acting as garbage consultants that undermine those garbage teams at every turn>>739166185>One more year>On top of the 8 they already hadAnything more than 4 years is development hell and the project should most likely just be scrapped.>"A rushed game actually releases with a compelling concept or is utterly forgotten, a delayed game will continue to water itself down forever and burn money" - Miguel Shiyamoto
>>739143912Why does Nintendo continue to fail their franchises this generation?Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Metroid and now Star Fox have gone through a sort of humiliation ritual by being very average at best and completely soulless. Is it really just because their leadership is focusing more on theme parks and planning out a cinematic universe?
>>739143912Because they still make games for children Give me a hyper realistic 18+ metroid with gore and sexual content
>>739144449Dread is good, Prime 4 is just meh
>>739169167>implying Retro would've even come close to finishing the game without Tanabe cracking the whipits easy to hate Tanabe for ruining Paper Mario, but his influence on Metroid Prime was nothing but a positive. Retro studious is laughably incompetent at making games on their own, they need a taskmaster.
>>739143912
>>739146320Prime 4 is too damm boring to have a redemption arc, boring corridor levels connected by a gigantic boring desert with the same 4 boring enemy types spammed over and over with a boring nothing story and a boring villain that does nothing the whole game
>>739169343>Cracking the whipPrime 1 and 2 were developed in 2 years each, likely less given false starts like 3rd person and the alleged fact that only 30% of Prime 2 was done 3 months before release.Wasting 2 years of development on a different studio and then going to Retro for 6 Years is not cracking the whip, not when there could have been 4 decent Prime games and at least 2 mass graves dedicated to burnt out Retro employees in that same time period.
>>739144930>It's the best selling game in the franchise, but probably only because the Switch has such a massive user baseIf that was true prime 4 and prime remake would've sold just as much
>>739144128This seems to only be a Prime problem, 2D Metroid is so fun, it never feels like it's getting old.>>739144930This, said what needed to be said about Prime, third-person camera if they make another 3D Metroid game, no more first-person.>>739144449Best-selling game in the entire franchise, put 2D Metroid back on the map as Prime 4 sank the Prime series.
>>739146320>I believe this game will see a lot of love in the coming yearsWell, you're going to be believing for a very long time then.>>739148386It would have flopped even harder and got shelved until SIE Japan would eventually took over and only if anyone gave enough of a shit to want it back.
>>739159379This
>>739143912Dread actually seemed to resonate well enough, but Prime 4 completely missed the point of the first 3 games and tried to target a more modern audience that was never going to be interested in this franchise anyway.Prime is supposed to be about the uneasiness of solitude married with the quiet tranquility of its atmosphere, and it had a very very specific niche that Prime 4 just simply didn't have, which left it with barebones shooter gameplay and a shitty open desert area as well as painfully obnoxious escort missions featuring yappy NPCs in the story. It does everything that Prime isn't supposed to do yet tendies were baffled when long time fans were upset with it and still don't understand why it flopped despite the reason being very obvious: homogenization. This game btw solidified a permanent reason for me to never ever buy a Switch 2 because it shows that Nintendo does not care about the quality of nor care put into its franchises anymore. It's not for the fans, it's not for the normies, so they're for fucking no one, yet they charge you more for these games than ever before. Garbage, worthless company.
>years of speculating his grudge>”he’s an experiment”>”he was hurt by Samus”>”the Federation was corrupt”>”he’s probably tragic”>none of the above, just a greedy fuck who’s jealous and pettyDare I say, kino?
4 killed the franchise forever, it's over.
I'm having a blast
>>739143912Maybe make a good one again and people will play it.
>>739170972The biggest justification for not buying a Switch 2 has to be their hardline stance against emulation and piracy. The Switch 1 benefited massively from basically concurrent emulation due to the CEMU overlap, especially on handhelds. Constant discussion and hype from people who weren't the target audience practically by definition fed directly to people who were too stupid not to just buy the official release. The fact that they took those emulators down immediately before the Switch 2 shows that they have no confidence in their lineup, don't trust anyone who doesn't want free, honest marketing.
>>739170972The problem with Prime 4 is that there shouldn't have been a Prime 4 in the first place.
>>739171656ok thief
>>739159005Dread gravity
>>739157514It wouldn’t make sense to have any other living Luminoth to talk to on a hostile Ing-infested planet when the whole plot is Samus saving the Luminoth from the brink of losing an existential war. I find it more impactful to have only U-Mos watching over the last survivors in hibernation at the temple, since it establishes the temple as a safe home base and gives more weight to the accounts of the dead keybearers you find from the prior conflict.
