Video game stories will never be appreciated by anyone but gamers because of shit like this. You see 2 characters that mirror each other on purpose and are confirmed to not be the same person, but you are adamant that they have to be because you are stupid. The moments when Ultimecia possesses Rinoa feel so unnatural, weird, and creepy because Rinoa is essentially possessing her past self. That’s also why she fell into a coma, they couldn’t share the same mental space at the same time. This contrasts with Edea, who remained somewhat aware of her words and actions but couldn't stop herself, like a passenger on a car ride. The game is pretty much spelling it out for you.
