It has some weird design choices like the final area opening up being tied to beating all Shadow Mario missions instead of your Shine total. Once you realize this, there’s no point in doing a lot of the content.

The level design is ass and there's hardly any of them. Every play through feels the same because of the endgame unlock conditions. It's the same problem as many GameCube games, which is that they rushed it.

Its unfinished, rushed trash like everything thing Nintendo put out on the Gamecube. Plus, it was directed by cuckzumi, and that movieloving moron will never make a good game.

Mario 64 is super limited. I played the game as a kid and I felt an extreme lack of ways to keep myself entertained with the game after I finished it the first time. Even the 'real state' you have to explore is limited. One of my favorite areas was that flooded city because it's one of the few things in the game that gives you any sense of being out of reach, since most of the other things are all super small and easily accessible.
Mario Sunshine, on the other hand, is much more attuned to the idea of creating a massive playground. Delfino Village alone plays a far better role than the castle. You have a ton of area to explore, secret locations, things to interact with, challenging spots to reach, etc.
The game's problem is that it needed to be much more polished. But it's not like Mario 64 was very polished either. The game is ugly, features programmer art in most of the levels, and is full of annoying bugs that ruin the experience, like that thing where Mario gets stuck in a loop where he falls and bounces back to the platform.

People who hate Super Mario Sunshine are genuinely retarded. Mario controls as tight as he ever has in this game, to the point where you can do spin jumps and sideflips on a dime. People who complain FLUDD slows down the game are just playing the game wrong. If you rely on FLUDD like a crutch then the only one slowing down the gameplay is the player. Mario moves lightning fast and by squirting water on the floor and diving into it, you can go at maximum speed to get from place to place in the game's levels. Each level is more vertically built which is suited to Mario's moveset. If you make a mistake and fall, you can use FLUDD to course correct but you can also use FLUDD in tandem with the superior spin jump to cross super long distance gaps. FLUDD only speeds the gameplay up as long as you aren't playing like a literal fucking retard. People also say it has a worse camera than 64 as if 64's camera isn't controlled with fixed directional inputs. Sunshine's analog camera is objectively better, and the silhouette system it works in tandem with so you can keep track of Mario's position behind objects is fantastic. Just say you're too fucking dumb to handle inverted camera controls. I would love to see you retards try to play a StarFox game. 64fags are just mad they didn't get a direct sequel on the 64DD and actually got something innovative instead.

What the fuck does this even mean, in practice it isn't slow at all, the water shoots out the moment you press R, and the hover carries your momentum. The squirt nozzle lets you spam spray giant bursts of water too that come out instantly. What could you possibly mean here?
"Skill expression" isn't even a real term, what corner of your ass did you pull that from? If you've ever watched a speedrun of Sunshine you'd actually know that the skill ceiling is incredibly high because of the freedom FLUDD gives the game's movement. I implore you to watch someone actually good at the game play it because if you had an ounce of self awareness then you'd immediately feel shame for playing the game the way you do (i.e. like a retard). There are advanced techniques you've probably never even heard of because you never bothered to experiment with the game's mechanics and use them properly before writing them off for being different than 64. You've got all the fucking brainpower of a cane toad.

Yoshi is available in every stage bar Noki Bay, he has the tongue and that can kill enemies instantly, he turns enemies into platforms eiyh the juice projectile, and has the flutter jump. I like Sunshine. The only real problems I have with it are:
-Reaching the Final Boss depends on clearing Act 7 of each level and nothing else, Shine count does not matter at all
-100%ing the game is ass due to Blue Coins
