I dunno if all extraction shooters are like this, but Marathon feels very "rich get richer" where average players are always at the mercy of no-lifes because the game is too easy to powercreep with a consistent group with how generous the loot drops are. First couple weeks of outpost and cryo archive were neat as everyone was learning the routes and tricks, but it immediately because a solved formula and unless you were farming pinwheel red loot 20 times a day, you were at a very slim chance of ever exiling from cryo archive. A wipe is not going to solve this because everyone knows what to do now and you will be running into fully geared purples by the end of the first week of season 2. They basically need to reduce how much of a loot pinata the game is or change things around where gold/purple actually feel rare and aren't the baseline one you hit 20 hours in.

Marathon’s a good game, but they need to escape the extraction shooter. The genre itself just has too many emotional pitfalls for players. Let’s look at the seasonal reset. Bungie THINKS it’s all going to go well, except that there’s enough prestige or narrative progression to warrant a vault reset. On top of that, they pushed players to grind for 250 hours over a season, meaning some people really do have these crazy vaults set up. As idiotic as steam chart watching is (durrr what is MAU), the reality is that the genre is just too abrasive for the majority of players. Bungie also aren’t fast enough at development, and so all the necessary updates won’t come around until season 5, and it’ll be too late then. They’re trying to apply development methodologies from d1 and 2 onto Marathon, but that was from 2016.

Its sad that the reality of bungie games is that bungie actually did jack shit when it comes to game development. Activisions teams actually did the heavywork until the split with shadowkeep which meant bungie was fully responsible for destiny 2's future which eventually died. Once you play a NUbungie game and stay long enough for updates you begin to slowly realize that bungie has no idea what they are actively doing. Hell even the devs use development money to outsource to other studios to get their shit made. If bungie put some passion into marathon, chose a good art style, made the characters not look like abominations, keep the pvp as it with with a fully dedicated pve mode, had more maps and enemy types they would actually have a normal game release but right now as it stands marathon has no content compared to d1 and d2 at launch. Again Activision was the one actually doing most of the work while bungie sat on their asses all day so not really a big surprise marathon failed

Reminds me too that bungie is very VERY stingy to developing a photemode in their game because before marathon they actually had good art styles and had these beautiful atmospheres but in order to take pictures of just areas you need to disable had and rapidly switch your weapons so you can get a clear view of an area or direct your camera in third person where it makes your character go away. People asked for photomode in destiny but bungie kinda shot those ideas down by stating the amount of effort to implement one is not worth it. Bungie doesnt care about effort in videogames. They are only here to get their checks and go home

Marketing went full retard, and they ended up attracting every possible griefer and sweatlord who honed their skills in Rust and Tarkov and battle royales, and turned the game into a battle royale. Add stacking advantages of faction upgrades and gear tiers, and grinding for a few days to wipe a lobby of noobs became a go-to. Then there are cheaters. And then there is retarded matchmaking that will put 3 purple-shielded fags agains a whole lobby of greys and greens. Add to it elements of hero shooters and some players just playing the game as if its Apex. Its over-focus on PvP is what fucked it up. That update that altered sound propagation also did not help. You could hear gunshots from across the entire map. You could hear (and still do) people opening up doors and popping vents and looting while being outside 20-50 metres away and they are inside. Too much push for PvP, too much forcing PvP.
