The original FC version of 3 has a bunch of weird ass redundancy as well. Is the Capacity System even needed when you get so much of it that it doesn't even matter? Why do 2 physical jobs have white magic 1-3, but no physical jobs have any black magic outside of black mage+warlock and red mage+sage? Why the hell do "Run" and "Defend" take up whole ass command slots that could have, in theory (and later, in execution), gone to other commands? There's other issues as well, but moving on: 3-DS was an attempt at fixing things, but it also broke things in its own ways, like there now being an annoying is refraction period when a character's stats drop for a while after switching jobs. Then you have the issues of things being even further imbalanced on account of the stat-adjusting for the lower numbers of enemies allowed onscreen in battle. Some jobs were made a bit better and others more balanced and sensible (like Magic-Knight becoming Dark Knight), but others were still shit, even with some aid given to them. Again, it wasn't until Pixel Remaster that things were actually sensibly done and balanced. It isn't entirely viable to use some lesser jobs later on, but they can also have more going for them and for longer (Hell, Bard is now a viable endgame option!). Still not perfect, but better than what was before it.
