When you were an illiterate fool of a child, did you have a game with deep narrative story and lore that you couldn't comprehend and just like it cause it was fun?
When I was a child games didn't have stories
That picture is me. I literally can't pick up on themes or symbolism unless it's heavy handed.
>>739156259Old fart.
>>739156301is there a way to fix this? is it just reading more and doing critical thinking exercises?
Baalbuddy knows ball fr ong no cap.
i tried reading brother karamazov and got bored 200 pages in when the brother started freaking out about his marriage.
>>739156348By doing it. By discussing with people on your level. By learning about the author's life. By not jumping into a complex book, and instead you follow its trail (required reading). If you don't start at any point and if you don't take your time you will never learn properly.

GTA San AndreasI didn't know how i completed the game being an esl and actually not being capable of reading, i didn't understand social political commentaryAccording to me, The cop had a brain tumor that made him crazy
>>739156301>>739156348My personal solution is repeating this cope: "themes generally don't matter it's all about how a character and his specific situation and story address a theme, in which case the theme or symbolism not being consciously processed is mostly irrelevant as long as you paid attention to that character as a human and learned from his particular case study also baalbuddy get a new joke".e.g. theme: povertyOk cool nice and deepMoral: poverty can lead people to commit crimeOkay wow super deep broSymbolism: the butterfly lives off of nectar but the moth burns to death when it tries to go towards the campfire of a hoboWowwww ermahgerd so deep!!Themes and symbolism are always overrated in general, it's just specific instances that can be good. But in that case and at that point just enjoy the particulars of the instances and ponder about those instead and not some litcharts keywords.

>>739156191Fucking hate Ulysses. Fun enough to read out loud but overloaded with reference that make it a chore to digest. Everyone praising sounds like they're in a cult. Some King in Yellow shit. But instead of thinking you're king of America you'll believe the Irish can write.

>>739156191That would be Final Fantasy 12. Unfortunately a lot of people still can't wrap their heads around the story even in their adult lives. I wasn't convinced by these "the average person is stupid as hell and half the population is stupider than that" doomers until I started trying to discuss FF12 with idiots who can't understand the story.
>>739157292I maintain that Finnegan's Wake is just a middle finger to those same individuals and nothing more save a lark to those who understand the puns.

I remember getting frustrated at my mom when she bought me baldurs gate dark alliance. I was like 7 years old and the intro where you just fight rats in a brown cellar for an hour just wasnt vibing with me.2 or 3 years later I remember doing multiple playthroughs one summer with some bros.
>>739158148
I tried reading portrait of the artist as a young man and it's so fucking BORING
>>739156301Just study what subtext is and what the most popular references are and you will understand most of it. Like, if you stare at the monolith and conclude it is a theatre screen or tv screen which represents media consumption and the 4th wall then you pretty much have it all figured out. Don't be disappointed when most of it is fucking kaballah shit or just basic psychological trickery since most people are dullards with nothing meaningful to say.Personally I think you should go for studying the techniques of geniuses instead. i.e. Kubrick, he is famous for his movies sure but his real genius is in his mastery of cinematography and the use of lighting in ways people didn't think was even possible.
>>739158367Congrats, you're a third of the way to figuring it out.
>>739156301Symbolism is gay as hell though, and people often misunderstand what symbolism actually is.For instance, some pople say Moby Dick is a symbolic story about obsession. It's not. It's a story about ACTUAL obsession. Just because obsession in people isn't usually about whales doesn't make the whale a symbol.

ESL here. The first proper story-driven game I played was probably Chrono Trigger, when I was around 9. Even though I was having a hard as fuck time slowly reading it with a dictionary, I still managed to understand most of the story and already had enough awareness to realize the game was superb.Around the same time, my dad made me read The Guns of Navarone and The Name of the Rose, all while telling me, "Smart kids your age understand these books easily, son. You're just lazy and want to play games all day."Thanks, Dad.
>>739159910Fio is really cuteDo you attempt 1CCs?
>>739159907disgree, I like my doujinshi story rich, i like romance, drama, comedy and horrorI wish fine art, a good translation, and a unique perspective
The dark truth about books is that everyone pretends that it's a medium of super deep masterpieces when in fact 99.999% of books have movie, comic book and video game level storytelling.

i'll be honest with you, I was basically too retarded to understand RPGs at all fgor the longest time. I had no idea. I never knew how to play them at all. I never understood the concept of grinding. Not till like fallout 3 in 2008I played through Kingdom Hearts 2 like four times and I used to say it was hard and my friend looked at my account and I had never even once used the items that boost your stats you get from leveling. like a fucking retard. Never changed equipment. I dunno why. I played complex wargames and shit but I didnt understand leveling. Diablo I guess but I would never spend skill points, wasnt even aware.
>>739156259They did, but inside the instruction manual
>>739156191There's a lot of games I did not enjoy as a kid because they felt like contrived or overly complex wastes of time and 20-ish years later that is still correct.
>>739160376it is why I hate him for that.most artists draw smut just to survive and there is this guy whose power of "lol incelf" is so strong he is paid to draw what he loves which is "lol incelf"A shame to because he drew okay smut
>>739156348Yea, just don't care about it. If the author wanted the story to have a theme then he should've made it obvious and if he didn't then he's a shit author and whatever subtext he failed to communicate was stupid and unimportant.
>>739156301>>739156348Hello. Ignore other answers:You have to experience extreme tragedy as a person.I could say "You have to mature" but that sounds extremely condescending and can be misinterpreted.Until you really get bloodied by the flaws of human society, a lot of themes will be lost on you.

>>739156191I remember playing Cryostasis and just enjoying it for the gameplay and atmosphere, I didn't understand the story at all. Which is a shame, because apparently the story's great. Maybe I should give it a replay.I did, however, get filtered by books. Heart of Darkness, Paradife Loft, Moby-Dick, Ulysses... I did eventually come back to all of them and they became some of my all-time favourites.
>>739159907Between this and the Ebert quote, which one did more damage to video game storytelling? I'm thinking it's probably Ebert since that led to the trend of 3 hour oscar bait walking sims trying to prove him wrong.
>>739156191>remorse of conscience IT'S JUST GUILT YOU PRETENTIOUS FUCKWAD

I played Talos Principle when it was launched and couldn't care much for the lore and reading terminals, was just doing ADHD zoom zooms running around discovering secrets and easter eggs and solving puzzles (didn't complete the game, bored halfway through). Fast forward a decade later, in mid 30s, not only the puzzle gets easier to approach and solve (calmed mind, pacing, no more ADHD zoomies) but more in general, gaming approach has considerably improved, thanks to Souls (how you approach a problem and find better solution quicker, or interpret a cryptic, fragmented lore, not so much the actual synaptic skills, I was always good at flicking pixel shooters, CSGO, PUBG etc typeshit)... But ooh wee the fucking story and lore got me. It was a fucking spiritual journey. Both the base game and the Gehenna DLC. I was fucking sobbing at the end LMAO. I needed this, I replayed Talos Principle at the right time of my life.
>>739166226Yeah, this. The only thing worse than having to put up with one woman's drama is multiple women's drama.
>>739166626You can't imagine. Game of Thrones has nothing on it. And the pettiness of some of the arguments would blow any man's mind. And the best part? It wasn't even the case of "you wanted both, so now live with the consequences." The two already were in a relationship.
>>739156191Planescape Torment
>>739156191>>739156301I think sometimes it's just difficult to make all the connections on your first read when you're not certain where is it all going. For example I read Plato's Republic and enjoyed it. But some time later I watched a lecture that went over the Republic's introductory scene, while pointing out how it directly reinforces all the ideas presented later on. I did not realize the first time i was reading, obviously, but after having read the thing I did not think back and consider "huh, I guess Socrates walking DOWN to the city and being almost forced to join the people was a direct reflection of the philosopher king coming down from the world of ideas and ruling the polis out of a sheer feeling of duty to the others". I forgot many details like that, and did not think back on them. Maybe someone sharper would, but I feel like most people would only realize things like that on a subsequent read. It's actually a bit like in classical music as well. Many themes repeat, go through variations and create patterns that they later end up purposefully breaking and subverting, but most people will forget that they have already heard that certain motiff 10 minutes earlier in the symphony, so it won't have as much of an impact. So I think in art in general you can only pick up on the more subtle details and themes if you're either devilishly sharp and have a good attention to detail, or if you simply go through things multiple times, so that you can analyze the piece from start to end with the context of the entire work already.or maybe it's just brainlet cope and most people can pick up on those things right from the get go idk
>>739166226I remember the news of a japanese man that somehow got himself 3 wives. He was so tired with the family he wanted to left them all and even promised to pay child supports.the joke? the man is unemployed and leeching on his wives, so how he's gonna pay child supports? He said he will find another rich woman to mooch off.
>>739157082>>739157084These kind of books are bullshit. A good author writes in a way anyone can read and understand, not in a way only he himself can read and then blames you for not being smart enough to "get it" (picrel). I appreciate it as a curiosity but that's it.
>>739167510then read the howard conan and other 'pulp' and the elric stuff by moorcock. great works, far , far better than any genre fiction made today. even better if you get the BD's. they're fucking gorgeous.
