I had this exact same team. I wasn't even trying to imitate anyone. I went in blind. Only exception is that a lot of people have Lucario too which I didn't because I was too lazy to raise a party of six. But other than that, it's uncanny how similar their teams are to mine.

genwar niggers will take this as a sign of the games being dogshit but in reality it just means that they frontloaded all the cool fun options
>>
There is not much for options in the maingame because half of the map is being blocked off by the mountain and the power outage...
And until the national dex is acquired good luck getting anything else. Although swap garchamp for graveler on the second playthrough.

Why so many people choose Garchomp as their ground-type over Torterra?
>>
>>739161851
Venusaur Syndrome. It is really not good to have a Grass Type be anything more than a single type. Now it's weak to all the things it's supposed to be resistant to.
>>
>>739161851
In platinum specifically you can get a gible significantly earlier than in D/P I believe
>>
For Platinum, I had
Torterra
Staraptor
Luxray
Chatot
Lumineon
Froslass
>>
>>739161851
Because Torterra is the worst Sinnoh starter of the three. Infernape obvious reasons for being the best, but Empoleon in gen 4's steel typing just gives it good defensive coverage until gen 6 somewhat nerfed steel to not make it resistant to ghost and dark, but it gained an advantage to fairy, so not too bad. Empoleon also just one shots Torterra with an ice beam as using a flying move like drill peck is a newbie trainer trap.

Really the ground typing on Torterra isn't all that good when it comes to defensive coverage since it already was resistant to electric in the first place due to being grass. Torterra would have benefitted more from being grass/rock like Cradily with the former being the atk/defense to the latter's special atk/special def.
>>
>>739160963
Yeah, they give you a nice variety of cool mons early so everyone just takes those.
I don't quite recall what my gen 4 teams were back when they were new, but I know for a fact I had torterra, staraptor, and probably luxio/luxray.
I say luxio because I also remember clearing FRLG with just venusaur and pidgeot. I think I had a ponyta and jolteon/vaporeon but I didn't use the rest of the party.

Sinnoh's Pokemon distribution is lopsided. Most people pivot their team around some degree of type coverage first and foremost, and Sinnoh has an extremely limited selection of several fundamental types.
Let's use electric as an example. If you want an electric type to take on gyms, it's going to be Shinx or Pachirisu. Magnemite and Electabuzz become available to you immediately before the eighth gym, which is the electric type gym anyway, so you wouldn't want to use them there. You and the majority of other players who wanted to use an electric type gravitated towards the Pokemon that evolved. Thus, Luxray.
Fire type is even more narrow of a category. Your options before the postgame are the Chimchar line or Ponyta.
Staraptor is common because it's the regional bird but it's also quite good. Most people really do want a middle of the road flying type in their team and Staraptor is the best and most common example in Sinnoh.

I don't remember if I had Garchomp on my team or not but I definitely had the rest of these 'mons.
I had several friends that definitely had Garchomp.
>>
Garchomp is awkward because it stays a gible and gabite for so long and need so much xp.
Luxray absolutely sucks that thing has nomoves
>>
>>739162084
>>739163076
This probably explains why I didn't have Garchomp, lol. I had Diamond as a kid, not Platinum.
>>
>>739160963
I always get a Gyarados and Togekiss.
A Gyarados can sweep the entire elite four.
>>
>>739162084
>>739163129
Yeah, you can get it right after the second gym and you also get the TM for earthquake if you're good at bike puzzles.

>>739160963
People want to use new pokemon and they don't want to use pokemon with more annoying evolution requirements. Budew for example needs to gain 150 friendship just to stop being a baby. Once a player has a team, they really need to like the new pokemon to replace an existing one, especially if they used a TM on it.
>>
People are afraid of using shitters and I really don't get why. I've run into cases where I had to bench a shitmon even for the fucking campaign, like Plat Carnivine or HGSS Ledian, but most of the time I usually get way more fun out of them then doing standard picks. My last Platinum run was this team and I had a lot of fun.
>Golduck
>Vespiquen
>Chimeco
>Houndoom
>Hippowdon
>Carnivine > Abomasnow
>>
>>739160963
I like doing nuzlockes of Pokemon games because otherwise I will gravitate towards the same Pokemon every time. Pokemon is much more fun when you're trying to make a team of 5 shitmons + your starter work with permadeaths.
>>
My team in Diamond was:
>Empoleon
>Luxray
>Staraptor
>Rapidash
>Medicham (I thought it was a gen4 pokemon until it wasn't, I only played Emerald in gen3)
>Abomasnow
>>
How come there's still no Gen4 demake hack?
>>
>>739163981
Demake hack as in Sinnoh in the Gen 1/2/3 engine, or as in a hack of BDSP?
>>
>>739164060
The former. I remember Platinum Red/Blue being shown off years ago and it looked really good, but the guy disappeared pretty soon afterwards.
>>
>>739160963
I just bought myself a copy of Japanese platinum
It's gaming time
Also a jewtuber also did a video on this subject
>>
>>739160963
for me it was:
Infernape
Luxray
Floatzel
Rhyperior
Dusknoir
Altaria

>not having double earthquakes by having Torterra and Garchomp on your team

Good fire types are hard to come by in most gens, especially in the early game. Also you almost always run into a lot of grass or bug pokemon in the early/mid game so having an early fire type is more beneficial. You can always pick up a decent grass type quickly when you need them and ground types usually aren't as helpful as other types that do the job just as well if not better.

>>739160963
What else IS there to use? Bidoof? lol
>>
>>739160963
I love my Garchomp so much, caught that little nigga Gible because he looked cute and then he turned out to be a killing machine
Platinum was awesome
>>
For me it's the grass starter because they almost always look the coolest.

come on bro gyarados is available in every fucking generation. are you just gonna use the same team every game?
>>
>>739168963
Team? No. Gyarados? Absolutely.
>>
might have something to do with 75% of available mons sucking ASS
>>
>>739160963
My team was
>Torterra
>Milotic
>Chatot
>Mr. Mime
>Spiritomb
>Drapion
>>
>>739161851
Personally as a kid it was just the experience of having grass starters being worse than the others when playing the game normally in the mid-late game of Gen 1-3 (casual with no competitive knowledge) or just being unappealing feminine designs (chikorita line, which sucked also)
Hoenn and flygon/salamence taught me the insane value of having a dragon type, finding gible early in Gen 4 by mere happenstance and understanding that it held massive investment potential due to also being ground type made it a staple in my team back then. I was only 9-10 y.o but already aware of the value behind such a mon

>>739169213
>find gible in the cave
>earthquake tm in the same area (insanely early for a move that strong btw)
They really wanted that thing to succeed
>>
>>739169321
It was the first time in the whole series they'd ever placed a Pokemon following the Dratini format somewhere you'd be able to use it for the majority of the game. I think it would've made a splash regardless.

That's what happens when a gen has dogshit variety
