Xcom 2 with Long War is peak turn based game

I love Long War for XCOM 1. Mostly because the strategic layer is so fun and complex and the tactical layer is so elaborate and challenging. I haven't played the one for the second game, though. It's because I still haven't actually beaten Long War 1. I insist on playing it on ironman, and the campaign is something around 150 hours long, and I've gotten seriously fucked up deep into the game multiple times, prompting me to restart. I think it's actually possible to bear even very significant losses and set backs, but the aliens get really really hard once their research gets very high, so it's probably better to make sure you have a relatively smooth ride and finish the game before it ever gets to that point. One day I definitely have to check out the second one. But it will probably be a few years until then.

Risk management. If you have chance to kill off enemy with grenade, use it. The science bitch will bitch about using explosives and them destroying loot/tech, but you rather down an enemy for sure than take risk of it being able to fight back.

First time playing it's ok to lose 1-3 countries, don't be a pussy and quit. The end of the month evaluation from the man in shadow is harsher than you are actually doing.

Once you done Enemy Unknown, get Enemy Within. It adds stuff and expects you to be familar with the base game. In Enemy Within once you done the alien base mission, a hidden timer starts for the aliens to invade your base. Make sure you have several viable units by then. Don't do the alien base mission until you can handle the following home defense no matter how many of your soldiers get injured or die in the alien base

I understood the need to force you to keep moving rather than just having the time to reload and hunker down in full cover after every single turn, but some time limits were especially bullshit. They want you to rely on concealment, but will also force you to overreach in the fog of war and end up getting team-wiped because of one unlucky enemy placement.

A genuinely fun game with a very steep learning curve and harsh RNG.

It's not the purist route but there's no shame in a back-up save if you're still learning the ropes and end up losing your whole team of best soldiers because your sniper decided to miss a 92% chance shot.

Because the vast majority of players lost the first game. It made sense moving forward to play off that idea and shake things up with the premise that the aliens won and now you have to rebuild things from the ground up.

Lwotc started out as barely playable garbage because xwyns or whatever his name is had a fucking hard on for le stealth so you'd get immensely punished for even daring to bring explosives to a mission/didn't bring along half a squad of shinobis
The mod drastically improved when he started listening to feedback and then finally was god tier when he dropped out of developing it

Fucking Ethereals ruined the fun for me just because "teehee, your soldier was born with psychic skill level 1, bad luck :^)" and I had to build like shitload of psionic labs just to train enough soldiers for the month before they were eaten alive by aliens.

You are not allowed to play Xcom 2 before having played 1. Play vanilla 1 first, either clear the campaign or stop before the final mission needing you to roll psychic, then add Enemy Within DLC. After that get Xcom 2 vanilla, playthrough the story first, then add War Of The Chosen Expansion. Don't jump into DLCs until you learned the base game, the DLCs expect you to be familiar with the base.
