Xcom 2 with Long War is peak turn based game
>play XCOM1>gov military defending the earth from evil aylmaos>like it>XCOM2 gets a trailer>"And now you get to be RADICOOL Xtreme ANARCHISTS! FIGHT DA POWAAA!">...What made them do that? Was it the same reason they made their expansions character focused and a third game no-one bought?
>>739161165About to start playing XCOM for the first time ever, starting with Enemy Unknown. What am I in for?
>>739161165I love Long War for XCOM 1. Mostly because the strategic layer is so fun and complex and the tactical layer is so elaborate and challenging. I haven't played the one for the second game, though. It's because I still haven't actually beaten Long War 1. I insist on playing it on ironman, and the campaign is something around 150 hours long, and I've gotten seriously fucked up deep into the game multiple times, prompting me to restart. I think it's actually possible to bear even very significant losses and set backs, but the aliens get really really hard once their research gets very high, so it's probably better to make sure you have a relatively smooth ride and finish the game before it ever gets to that point. One day I definitely have to check out the second one. But it will probably be a few years until then.
>>739161961They want to fight for palestine
>>739161165>long don 2Nah.
>>739161961They are literally turning humans into glue in the second one
>>739161961I assume because they think it would be better narrative than 'Alien invading again',
>>739162189A genuinely fun time and grief as long as you don't save scum.
>>739161165Worst thing about 2 was how every mission had a timer, I don't like games that rush me like that.
Protip for anyone who hasn't played XCOM 2's last mission: focus on the objective at all costsThe adds are infinite
>>739162189Risk management. If you have chance to kill off enemy with grenade, use it. The science bitch will bitch about using explosives and them destroying loot/tech, but you rather down an enemy for sure than take risk of it being able to fight back.First time playing it's ok to lose 1-3 countries, don't be a pussy and quit. The end of the month evaluation from the man in shadow is harsher than you are actually doing.
Xcom 1 cast mogs 2
>>739161165Does the mod fix the power creep issue where you can wipe out an entire map with a single ability in the late game?
I get filtered by LWOTC's first mission. I don't like the massive squads.
>>739162189Once you done Enemy Unknown, get Enemy Within. It adds stuff and expects you to be familar with the base game. In Enemy Within once you done the alien base mission, a hidden timer starts for the aliens to invade your base. Make sure you have several viable units by then. Don't do the alien base mission until you can handle the following home defense no matter how many of your soldiers get injured or die in the alien base
>>739162452I understood the need to force you to keep moving rather than just having the time to reload and hunker down in full cover after every single turn, but some time limits were especially bullshit. They want you to rely on concealment, but will also force you to overreach in the fog of war and end up getting team-wiped because of one unlucky enemy placement.
>>739162189A genuinely fun game with a very steep learning curve and harsh RNG. It's not the purist route but there's no shame in a back-up save if you're still learning the ropes and end up losing your whole team of best soldiers because your sniper decided to miss a 92% chance shot.
>>739162327>>739162343>win the first game>"Oh no you did-unt!" finger snaps>narrative is now about how some punks and a super smart chinese girl take on the government>music is now generic and uninspired>trains... the trains... look a train... another train... what are they doing with all these trains...>we got contact with another resistance outpost, made of tinfoil and living in the outback>if only we could just tell the people the truth, they'd jump on that stage and arrest the speaker, something not even we would dare do>every mission has a countdown because... uhhh... players kept not wanting to trigger 5 pods at once so now you have to... and we're not going to do a balance pass on how swingy the RNG is, we're just going to make it even more swingy with giant damage numbers! It just seems so dead to me
>>739162452>>739163002We been through this so many times. The timers are lenient and the only reason anons bitch about them is the psychological effect. Even if they were 10 times longer, there are still weak minded anons feeling pressured
>>739161961>XCOM 1 is not marvel bro, NOOO don't talk about the chosen one stepping into gollop chamber and collapsing the ayyylien ship with a blackholeanyway guerilla warfare is basedevery major Earth power lost those tactics>Soviets in Afghanistan >Germans got bogged down to various resistances in WW2>Austria-Hungarian Empire lost to bunch of serbs>US to vietcong, embarrassing retreat during Elder Joe
>>739163234They're fine once you actually find your footing. But if you're early game with a squad of rookies on your first playthrough they feel like a real bitch.
>yellow alert mod>pods run towards noises instead of being steered away>now every mission is hell on earth
>>739161961Because the vast majority of players lost the first game. It made sense moving forward to play off that idea and shake things up with the premise that the aliens won and now you have to rebuild things from the ground up.
Julian is fun.
>>739161961>Anon is so scared of being associated with people who criticize violence from any form of government that he hates the idea of fighting back against an alien force that took over the worldDid Half Life give you an aneurysm too?
Lwotc started out as barely playable garbage because xwyns or whatever his name is had a fucking hard on for le stealth so you'd get immensely punished for even daring to bring explosives to a mission/didn't bring along half a squad of shinobisThe mod drastically improved when he started listening to feedback and then finally was god tier when he dropped out of developing it
>>739163437>>739163670>look anon, antifa afghanis!I know you love the idea of fighting Da Man and his jackboot, but image related is not XCOM.XCOM is a professional multinational organization that puts you into a uniform and might as well give you a number, not a name. It's not fashion victims going to a half price concert.Black Mesa was all scientists on government pay and GMan is named after, get this, Government-Man. Woah. Crazy, I know. But what's more crazy is that Gordon had no facepant, no tattoos, no piercing. He even wore his hair like an absolute square!
>>739164190>faceless organization fights back alien invaders in game 1>faceless organization fights back alien invaders in the sequelI rather take something new
>>739162189don't trust what the game tells you! if it says there's a 95% chance to hit, the reality is 50-50.
>>739162189Half-cover is not a cover
>>739161961When they announced it they literally explained the reason they went with this is because the vast majority of players never beat XCOM EU/EW
>>739161165all I remember from XCOM 2 to s Bradford and the chosen ones constantly fucking talkingGive me a break!
I haven't played XCOM 2 yet, but does it also have psychic skills bullshit like XCOM UD?Fucking Ethereals ruined the fun for me just because "teehee, your soldier was born with psychic skill level 1, bad luck :^)" and I had to build like shitload of psionic labs just to train enough soldiers for the month before they were eaten alive by aliens.
>>739166546Good morning! Enemy Unknowns DLC Enemy Within gives you story character and her associates that are psychic potential by default!Xcom 2 also has PSYCHICS! But this time you need to build facility and put rookie in it to make them learn psychic abilities.
>>739166439>Alien yappingI sleep>Bradford yappingI'm woke
Commander, the aliens continue to make progress on the Avatar Project. If we're going to slow them down, we'll need to move fast.
>>739163514literally meI want to make yellow alert work but the early game is BRUTALCommander is doable, Legend feels literally impossible
>>739167260>Ignore the Avatar project on a hard mode run because I can just lower it later.>Timer starts>Get absolute dogshit rng and every base was in an area I hadn't made contact with yet.>Covert mission to lower it doesn't work>Lose run.
>>739161961I swear to god you fucking retards could play Ethnic Cleansing and think it's some kind of left wing propaganda game.
>>739165834no cover is lavahalf cover is no coverfull cover is half coverbreaking LOS is full coverkilling everything in one turn is safety
>>739167260
the premise is fine, but they messed up when they designed the cities as clean and futuristic. should've gone the city 17 route, with rundown human buildings and patrolling aliens, for a proper dystopian feel.
I watched some aussie youtuber that sold me on EU's Long War and I don't think I'm built for that much overwatching
>>739167597the would ruin the atmospherethe whole premise is that everyone thinks the aliens are heckin wholesome diverse hero leaders when in reality they're turning people into soilent green and making mindless hybrid servant soldiers
>>739167597
A few things keep me from ever play long war.1. XCOM 2 is already perfect.2. Seems bloated and overwhelming.3. Installing it on a pirated copy seems a pain in the ass.
>>739167912Xcom 2 is already pretty long and complicated, I really don't think long war was a good idea for it.
Avatars are cancer
>>739163131the whole pod thing was stupid in the first place. was pc hardware so shitty that they couldn't give each of the 30 or so aliens a simple ai? they had to break it down into 5 pods that get a free move when you spot them?
>>739169235You mean the Chosen? The rulers? You can't mean the Avatar enemies with their white anime hair
>>739163437the french won in algiers against guerilla warfarebut then they surrendered
>>739169349>free movementIf you activate the pod they rush for cover and act on the next enemy turn. If they stumble upon you on their turn, they rush for cover and dont act until next enemy turn
>>739169408how very French of them
>>739163234>the only reason anons bitch about them is the psychological effect.valid reason.i also use adblock even though i've never clicked on an ad. i just don't want that shit
>>739169424and? use your words, anon
Post yfw your last move activates an enemy pod
>>739169519I dont go moving to uncharted area on my last move
>>739169606>step next to your own guy>the one tile reveals a whole set of enemies
>>739169519sorry but I have explosives a sniper with death from above
>>739169606still happens if you do that, did you play the game?now post yfw
>>739169763I can tell when my movement would cover new area of vision.
>>739169519AAAAHHHHHHH HALF MY GUYS ARE OUT OF COVER NOOOOO>They all miss anyway
>>739169349You're the most retarded mongoloid I've seen today, congratulations. No I will not elaborate, If you don't understand why pod system is the way that it is talking to you is a waste of everyone's time.
>>739170593OP is retarded, but the pod system is ass. It exists to artificially balance the game by making enemies act retarded on purpose because the devs couldn't figure out how to make the guerilla warfare thing work otherwise
that's rude manI love getting shot from the fog of war and losing half of my squad on turn 2that's hardkorea man
>>739161165I'm supposed to like this game if I liked mario+rabbids, right? If sparks of hope had a harder difficulty setting, and made the overworld less tedious to explore, it would be like in my top 15 games
>>739170836You are not allowed to play Xcom 2 before having played 1. Play vanilla 1 first, either clear the campaign or stop before the final mission needing you to roll psychic, then add Enemy Within DLC. After that get Xcom 2 vanilla, playthrough the story first, then add War Of The Chosen Expansion. Don't jump into DLCs until you learned the base game, the DLCs expect you to be familiar with the base.
>>739169943Impossible. Sometimes vision passes through solid walls. I've lost more runs to vision being bullshit than I can count.
>>739171460Let's say I have moved 5 of my dudes and I only have 1 dude to go. I wouldn't bring him outside the area the 5 guys already surround. I wouldn't bring the 6th guy further, I wouldn't move him left or right from the established edges. I wouldn't open new visible tiles at all with him.
>>739171081I agree, I played 2 before EW and when I played EW later I spent the whole thing thinking "Wow, I wish I was playing 2 instead of this."
>>739171460>>739171581The 5 red dots are 5 guys already moved. The 6th guy is green and the safe area for him to move is green
>>739170593i never said i didn't understand it, you hallucinated that. meds
>>739162189a great time. I wish I could go back in time and re-experience it for the first time myself.
