>rogue released in 1980>we still call similar games "rogue-like" in 2026
I'm afraid it's worse than that. We now call entirely dissimilar games Roguelikes.
>>739167794I do like it when games are like Rogue though
>>739167732What would you prefer them to be called, Mr Faggot OP?
>>739167732for me it's mobain the sense that riot was shilling the term as to not get called a "dota clone" and that's literally it for "battle arena"
>>739167794the sad thing is "roguelite" was fine but I guess too similar for idiots to tell apart. it's like how you usually know exactly what you're getting when someone says "rpg elements"
>>739167732>Socrates came out 2,500 years ago>still call it the Socratic method
>>739167732>call similar gamesThe term was redefined there
>>739167794Card games are roguelikes now, no sure how to feel about that.
>dude if the game is not exactly Rogue you can't call it Roguelike or I'll have an autistic meltdownIf it has permadeath it is a roguelike whether you like it or not.
I remember a really fun ponglike, it was semi-3D (or 2.5D as intellectuals call it), where you hold a paddle (green) and there's a ball and a back wall. you hit the ball (position1) with the paddle and it bounces to the back wall. from there it bounces back towards the player in a different position. ball speed would increase the longer you playedanybody know it? I think it was a flash game, definitely a browser game. it had a dark/neon theme if I remember correctly
>>739167794I think the slippery slope started when people called Spelunky a "roguelike" for some stupid reason.
>>739168026Well the true origin of the "genre" was literally hero arenas in warcraft 3
>>739168270No, but you're free to have an autistic meltdown about being wrong
Imagine if we still called FPS's "doomlikes" instead of giving them an actual fucking name
>>739168026surely there was nothing wrong with ASSFAGGOTS
My favourite roguelike is ToME.
>>739168270Dudeee real life is a rougelike
>>739167732>british pseudointellectual youtuber renames a genre>entire internet starts parroting his completely non-descriptive buzzword
>>739168992You at least have to agree that 'spectacle fighter' is a much better name than "character action"
>>739168992>british pseudointellectual youtuberthere’s another one besides josh strife hayes? ffs
>>7391690383d beat-em-ups
>>739169149>another one>oneshould we tell him?
>>739168992Isn't this the guy with a whole series of videos about how the brilliance of Zelda is locked doors that make you turn back so when you find a key you'll say "aha!"It was like the Tartuffe the Spry Wonder Dog guy from KoTH but for game design
>>739169263no don't tell me, this news >>739168992 was already devastating
>>739168992they're called 0451 games
>>739167732"Roguelike" is just one of those terms which has embedded itself into video game lingo, to the point where it's taken on a definition separate from its literal meaning. "RPG" had a similar thing happen, to where it refers to an experience-and-leveling system even when that has nothing to do with any sort of roleplaying experience. It's just that so many games with those systems have been labeled RPGs, that people associate video game RPGs with leveling and stat increases. The same think happened with roguelikes. So many games, that involved restarting runs and randomized elements, were named roguelikes that this is what the term means now.>>739168992What was the name of the genre before it was called "immersive sim", and why isn't that name on your Google chart?
>>739170539"role-playing game" funnily enough
>>739167812Very thin line between good mechanic and ruined game
>>739167732>OP released in 2006>we still call him a faggot
>>739168992>entire internet>interest over time 100
>>739170539Apparently somebody said "my game is immersive, also a simulation" and people called it a genre. pretty weird
>>739167732colossal cave adventure came out in 1976 and we still call things "adventure games"
What will we be calling soulslikes in a few years?
>>739171394What did he mean by this?
>>739174152>soulslite
>>739167835StSlike or Spirelike cause that's the game they all copied. These modern indiegames have NOTHING in common with original Rogue.
>>739174152rollslop
What category did they put Rogue in?
>>739174763inclusive interval roguelike
>>739167794What would you call modern roguelikes instead?
>>739177119platformer w/ permadeath, card game w/ permadeath, metroidvania w/ permadeath...the list goes
>>739167794It's even worse than that. We now call games that are the exact OPPOSITE of rogue "roguelikes".It'd be like if "doomclone" was the name we started using for third person racing games.
>>739168270>If it has permadeath it is a roguelike99.9% of modern "roguelikes" have meta-progression, which means they don't have permadeath.
>>739174763rpg
