In the first game I could agree with excluding guns since it would just make combat too easy. You had the option to remove annoying leviathans, but you'd really have to commit time to it since you'd either sit there stunning it and swiping at it with a knife for 50 years or have to be relatively late game with a Prawn that had the grapple and magic wand arms and massage them to death for only about 20 years. It naturally discourages you from killing too many of them, but just doing a couple is fine.
It all worked out pretty well. Very good game and I can still remember my experience with it clearly.
