Esports idiocy and the consequent "no fun allowed, everything must be PERFECTLY balanced" approach to design. Said E-sport then being decided in the first 30 seconds of the match depending on one side being un/able to scout the other or one side blind-countering the other's build. Fun RTS is broken units being balanced by the existence of other broken units, everything feeling powerful, and RTS developers strived to achieve the opposite of this, every unit feeling weak as shit on its own, while powerful, tide-turning abilities were taken away from them and relegated isntead to one click "support" powers ie: cancer mini-superweapon spam that is disproportionately hard or even impossible to counter.

It tried to do too much and it ended up splintering into other genres that did specific things better.

Macro players went to 4x/grandstrat/Dominions/whatever
Micro players went to MOBAs and similar genres
Realismfags went to RTT or games like Graviteam and Combat Mission
Esportsfags just stuck to SC1 or went to the aforementioned MOBAs and such

They split up into a lot of genres and there were never that many RTS players to begin with. Robolox probably has more unique hourly users than there ever were RTS players.
