Played and finished 4 but dropped 5 mid game
I just couldn't tolerate buying, crafting (and upgrading? can't remember) gear every dungeon level for the whole party.

Do the old ones also have crafting?
I hated dungeon delving to get that single mat I was missing only to replace that weapon a couple hours later.

Also, I ended up hating both my rover (shit damage but loved her passive healing and debuffs) and harbringer (status ailments suck dick while exploring and it didn't feel like he pull his wheight vs FOEs) yet didn't bother swapping them out so maybe its on me.
The rest of the party were:
Pugilist build around one-two punch for funsies but used something with recoild damage vs mobs, fucking one-two always procd on dying enemies.

I don't recall needing to refarm items for anything in 1-3, maybe a special boss drop for something that completely skips a chunk of the progression curve but if so that's an exception rather than the rule.

Wizardry is far superior as a series
>>
>>739196347
I don't really mind that structure honestly, FOEs are Etrian's unique element after all, it's good to expand on them more instead of every game just being "oh here's the FOE that walks back and forth, here's one that chases you, uhhhh that's it i guess."
It's easy to be reductive and just say "FOE puzzle" but they're usually pretty unique and satisfying to solve. If anything I wish they didn't crank down the encounter rate to 0.0001% during these sections so managing your steps is still a factor while doing them. I also wish they didn't buff escaping from FOEs in recent entries so fucking up is actually punishing.

I love the idea of creating classes and lots of characters, and building them up. EO seems like a series that I would absolutely get into.

But fuck, I highly doubt that I will enjoy the actual blobber dungeon crawling part. So conflicted about getting these games.

what
Pugilist is great because he deals good damage while fishing for binds.
Harbringer NEEDS status ailments to deal their damage. You spend TP to inflict status ailments and deal shit damage and spend TP again next turn to deal your damage on whatever is already suffering the status ailment. Also miasma.
Harbringer is not a well thought out class unless I was playing it wrong, but I didn't look up shit online much so maybe I was playing it wrong.

The blobbing and mapping takes some time to get used to, but it can be fun in a soothing way sort of.
If you're really on the fence just pirate one of the ones on PC or emulate one of the others.
The series is dead (Yes it is that video announcement is 8 years old its time to let it go) so a sale or two won't matter.

The games post 3 (the best starting point, next to 4) have interesting classes and random encounters, alongside wandering mini boss enemies (FOEs). There's a lot of fun to be had with the well crafted gameplay, building a party, filling out their skill trees, and fighting ever stronger enemies as you explore. If that's not enough for you then you will never like the series as narrative has always been rather weak.
>>739200017
I did a solo with highlander (finished the main game) and considered doing a meme run with 5 Highlanders, using staggered force boosts to keep the party healed. The fact that Delayed Charge is ranged and that they have a solid suite of buffs makes this viable, I think.

Necromancer. Such a well realized and amazingly fun class. Dark Hunter is a close second even if it teeters on the edge of broken or dogshit
>>
>>739200903
dark hunter is just a fundamentally bad idea for a class, it can't be balanced, so instead it just gets to swing between the two ends of the spectrum

>>739200690

Ah I see the issue. Harbinger doesn't have the highest infliction rates but as you level they'll be fairly reliable if a bit mediocre because they're line target. Herbalist is the go to for ailment infliction, you just need to make an elf/human one instead of a potato because potatoes have shit luk.

Maybe so.
I like that he feels like a challenge at least rather than a boss you roll over.
>>
>>739200958
You can make a greater criticism towards shutdown letting you bypass engaging with all sorts of enemy mechanics. It works wonderfully in random encounters in EOV and EO2U where there's often high priority threats that are difficult to nuke with notable vulnerabilities. In a boss context it can be unsatisfying to blaze through mechanics but I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with such parties existing, if you come to the conclusion that you feel like you're cheesing the boss because you blow it up in one ailment cycle then you can always just pick a different party. Isn't that the beauty of these games? They're supposed to provide a wide variety of playstyles.

I find that a lot of popular beloved series start getting hate by terminal contrarians calling them "babby's first", but then when you branch out into other examples of the genre you find a whole lot of absolute dog shit examples of the genre and end up gaining new appreciation for your original entry.

I will say this though, one very legit criticism of EO is the relative simplicity of the labyrinths compared to other drpgs, so those whose subjective tastes lean more towards exploration than combat understandably don't like it.
>>
>>739200208

>>
>>739201487
>I'm surprised that the FoE thing started there
Oh no, I didn't mean that. FOEs were always a staple. It's just that 1 and 2 have more simplistic combat and encounters compared to later entries. Especially 1, which is like maybe 1 step up in class complexity from early FF games.

Also, the armor or outfit design is usually more significant than the hair color. When looking at the EO2 Gunners, it's not "blonde vs brunette" but rather "cute fluffy blue-and-white outfit vs megane" character.

the models look way better than the ongs and a lot of them are of incredible quality
the humanoid bosses all have 10/10 3D models and I've unironically spent an hour or so looking at them in the codex (no one actually managed to extract them from the games sadly) trying to understand their texturing
also fun fact some big enemies come with a shader that covers half of their model to mimic the really dark shadows of their original 2d counterpart and if you rotate them the shader get applied to whatever is in it since the models are always seen from the front in battle

In all entries ailments are effective against normal enemies, the bosses resist them a lot in eo3 though and the ailment classes in that game are more trouble than they are worth to use.

In every other game ailment classes ate broken unless you're a retard that can't read their own skillset, I'll give you that eo1 is probably the only game where hexer isn't obviously game breaking.
>>

It's funny because the reality is the opposite, with the party collectively sharing a facepalm as the fencer became a red stain in the floor for the 5th time this trip.
>>

Nah man you just have to go all in on Call Elephant as soon as you can after maxing the global infliction passive. I've used wildling twice and while it sucks for the first 1.5 stratums it just shits on everything after that. Both my Abyssal God kills are credited to my Wildling panic locking the boss in attack form long enough for my party to burst it down.
>>
>>739206530
the introduction of extra attributes for your weapons also made ailments massively more viable, since you don't have to rely entirely on specific skills and jobs

I think it worked just fine for other aliment classes like Nightseeker and Necro. Dark Hunter was just their first attempt at it. vs
>use same status attack twice, if it lands on your first attack there is no need to use it a second time it and it deals damage on top of that
>>
>>739206912
Not for me it didn't, and I beat the whole game with a sword only """"dodge"""" fencer. Unless you're spamming predict with a swordless naked fencer or something you'll regularly get clipped. Sword only gets hit 2/10 times, but when almost every hit kills you it means you're using a minimum of 1 nectar per trip. Usually more. And it has such a rough progression too.
>not a dodge fencer for the first 2 stratums because there's little for you to invest in as you prepare for second name
>third stratum involves scrambling to get your build together because if you're not maxed with lightweight you're not dodging shit
>fourth stratum ends with Crystal Dragon's 9001% accuracy moves killing my phantom fencer... through blind...and accuracy debuff... Almost every turn... legit almost booted the cunt out of my party and would have were it not for my Chain Fencer
Their damage being EO1 tier (outside of Lure memes) in the 3ds era is just icing on the cake.
>>
>>739206120
>>739206350
Ailments are pretty damn good in all the games. There are better options sometimes, but poison is always fairly consistent as an early game option at the minimum, and sometimes scales well into the later stratums. In later games the penalty for respecing isnt particularly damning either, especially since you typically do it anyway around the time you get more class options, dual spec, etc

There are some more niche status effects such as Petrify in EO5 that also work very very well and binds are usually pretty decent half the time. Also, while expensive, I found the elephant in EO3 is insanely strong during random encounters. AoE confusion and a strong meat shield works very well The one drawback to that is the cost, which is offset considering it exists in the same game as Dark Ether. Still, Ninja definitely mogs wildling when it comes to using your one extra party slot sadly

You're right that the odds are better just spamming it but Wilting Miasma also decreases the likelihood of the enemy recovering from ailments/binds and it applies to everybody trying to inflict ailments or binds, parties centered around those tend to have multiple members with the ability to inflict.

>>739206530
Agreed, but's still more work than needed to call pets and send thrm back in randoms to conserve tp rather than simply attacking, for bosses wilding is actually fine until the bosses build up resistance but eo3 is more of a unga bunga damage game - If you know what you're doing you'll likely kill the enemy while it's disabled by wilding instead of the enemy becoming immune. Buy for newbies wilding has a bit too many traps to go along with the other traps they might have in their party.
>>739207353
If you'd read your own fucking skills you'd know it makes ailments stick longer and it increases the chance of ANYONE landing ailments, so you'd spend more turns being able to attack while the boss is a blind or comatose retard like you.

How is U2? I never actually finished EO2, because it felt so much less fun than EO1. I thought maybe I was just burned out, but then I started up EO3 and it was a blast. It makes me wonder if Untold changes things in a way that would make me hate it less

nta but I liked it. I do view it as the start of overemphasis on burst damage but you have the tools to do this with a myriad of parties (we're long past the days of thinking Fafnir is op and the only class that can contend with massive HP pools). It also started the formulaic labyrinth design that >>739196347 mentioned, but I still think the combat is overall pretty damn good and party building is highly customizable due to a revamped grimoire system.

Just take Hoplite and monk to make a comfortable backbone before choosing your dps/support. Gladiator, Arbalist, and (contrary to what the clueless parrot) Zodiac are all heavy hitters with little else to offer as support besides Zodiac's Dark Ether (best used by someone else). Wildling needs some skill to pilot correctly (really just knowing what to invest skill points into) but just completely shuts down much of the game when it comes online. Buccaneer and Ninja can simultaneously do mid damage with mid status ailments barring exceptional situations where they can become nukes. Shogun and Yggdroid are unlocks so I've never used them, and Princess can be used in place of monk, though Monk sub Princess is way better than Princess sub Monk.
>>
>>739209205
Drop the healer for arcanist(have it sub medic), from the way you typed that you probably aren't using your fortress correctly or meaningfully so you can drop that for the spell caster or whatever other damage class catches your eye.
You might need the dancer for support until you learn to use arcanist properly at which point you can replace it also if you want.
Dancer is a bit hard to use properly but honestly if you click heal dance, attack Dance, and guard dance you'll attack least get something out of it until you start replace it or mess with the more complex skills.

3 is better than the first two games, but if you can deal with some janky old school rpg design it is best to at least try them before going to 3.
After EO1/2 no EO game expects you to grind to bypass a challenge during the main game - the games want you to think and use your options.

EO1 and 2 only seem to require some grind due to a large number of trap skills and less options in battle.

A lot of Japanese properties use blondes because that's exotic over there.
>>
>>739210439
That's the thing, they don't fall off nearly as hard as is memed either. Sure, they can no longer obliterate things with etheric charge > limit like they do early game but they're not lagging much behind Arbalist even at late game and still especially fuck shit up when they hit weakness (they are roughly equal with Glad). I actually went out of my way to test this with ~lvl 65 characters during my post retirement grind. They're not just viable, they're strong throughout on top of having an especially busted early game.

At worst you might need to move the Monk to the back and make sure you sub hoplite or zodiac somewhere.
Your princess can use rally and defend order, maybe even add a third defense buff if you can't resist the urge to go "BUT I NEED MIRE DAMAGE" and you'll pretty much never die with elemental coverage as well.
Prevent order can be swapped in over Rally or Defend order as needed.

>>739219030
Yeah, Celestrian is 2nd in LUK I believe, either way I've used it and they're still consistent at applying, a Deathbringer will help even more with Wilting Miasma. Between Rover and Dragoon, Rover is going to help you more in random encounters with its good AOE and passive sustain while Dragoon will help more in FOEs and boss fights. I guess I lean Dragoon because I like Rover more in parties without other sources of healing like Shaman or Botanist. It's annoying to get by with items but doable and one of the valuable points of Rover is you can replace the functions of other support classes with them. So I lean Dragoon. You probably won't get much use out of Shield Bearer but you have plenty of shutdown to let Dragoon DPS and have Buster Cannon pop off in the Cannon path.
>>
>>739219379
Can't poisoner botanist still heal? Or will I be that tight pressed for skill points as to where I shouldn't?
>>
>>739219595
Right, because Poisoner Botanist can cover heals Rover isn't that attractive because Rover likes to be in parties where it replaces a class like Botanist entirely. Rover is a jack-of-all-trades class that can pick up roles a party is lacking, but your party already covers everything.

If I remember right their Bind is decent, the main centerpiece of applying lots of those is Leading Blow, there are a few ways to do those like Chain Blast (opportunity cost of meter but very reliable) and Clinch (somewhat unreliable but efficient application), the other is good old aiming for 3 Binds at once with separate characters and Rover can contribute to that. With how powerful shutdown is in EOV, particularly because it's baked into racials, it's reasonable for many parties to run tankless and dedicated tanks are more a consideration for very squishy roles like 4 Katana Blade Dancer, which Rover can cover.
>>
>>739220738
Huh, didn't think lockdown was that viable. My last tankless run was miserable.
Granted said party was based around my misinterpretation of how Chain skills work. So I I built a lot into a multi-hit party that didn't matter for chains.
>>
>>739221198
Dragoon is a great class regardless and you'll find a lot of use in their tanking skills, I think Bunkers are also good all game long. Just most parties can get away without someone like a Shield Bearer, Necromancer or Fencer redirecting all the damage, provided you cycle your binds, ailments and stay healthy.
>>
>>739189449
I've been playing through Nexus and wanted to try reliving the attacking monster of shogun in 3. I am feeling though that it's kit for that goal has been split to far and a Gunner/Shogun would just infinitely be better at it.

>>
>>739221673
Yeah, I ran a double Fencer party for my first run and I know the pain. Fencer early just has nothing going on besides a shitty Blind, and you have two of them. You already figured out the main problem otherwise, you have half of a straight up damage party combined with a Chain Fencer set-up who only gets multiple chains off of a few classes.

Nice thanks. I've jumped in a few threads before because I do like dungeon crawlan but I can't go through any series one after the other. That was something I did vaguely remember though.
>>739232783
Good to know thanks, I definitely would have avoided stacking classes.
>>
>>739232140
Get a Medic, max out Immunize, you'll thank me later
>>
>>739220557
congrats anon
the game should be much easier going forward
>>
Realistically, why can't Sega just let Etrian Odyssey be a nice small series? Doesn't need super fancy graphics, just let them make a nice simple dungeon crawler on the same level of the 3DS ones, release on PC and other platforms for a reasonable price and I think it'd do great.
>>
>>739232140
I'd recommend checking a guide with values for skill points, love me my Etrians but assigning skill points blind is a massive gamble, they might be a straight 50% damage increase on an ability or a +1% chance of a secondary effect happening

What? More Persona? Coming right up.

Why make small niche series when you can make mass appeal big money series?

The smile makes her a lot cuter. but i don't pick Shogun at all. Ronin>>>>>>>>>Shogun
>>
>>739236474
That seems to be the current mentality of SEGA, unfortunately I don't see it changing anytime soon.

Not home but
>announce new RPG IP
>it's just persona again but less horny
>>
>>739236570
this is some shitty gacha, isn't it?
i just want an actual cute girl ronin game
>>
>>739236474
to be fair, there's already more etrian games than people play and there's only so much you can iterate on, dungeon crawlers like etrian seem easy to put out but a new game probably needs more work than a modern SMT or persona design wise
>>
>>739232140
Nope. Bugged skills are fixed and now you. Can see the full skill tree in the UI so you don't need a guide.

You want a medic with immunize and caduceus. In other EOs you have more options for healing, but in 1 you want a medic.

Man.

I'm on Stratum 4 now and I'm just not having any fun. Beat the numbered ones so all I have now are the Untolds and Nexus. I hate looking up attack patterns, but also trial and erroring this shit is fucking tedious.

4chan told me this was The Best One. I can't believe they'd lie about video games.

wrong, it doesn't work that way in 5

>>739207641
I would be all for it if it quaranteed the status to land and didn't take 10 skill points on a skill point starved class. (auto miasma, miasma, various status skills, damage skills that need status, damage skills that don't...)
>>
>>739237156
We all told you 4 was the best one. Should've listened.
>>
>>739236878
Nope, it's a chink indie Risk of Rain clone.
>>
>>739237156
I dropped the game around the end of the 5th stratum cause I really couldn't be assed to beat the pre-final boss with its borderline mandatory dogshit map puzzle and its gorillion hp
that and FOEs being equally bad stat checks
>>
>>739237156
I like Nexus the best :)
>>
>>739237156
It's a matter of taste. U2's bosses have fairly strict patterns but if you dance their dance you'll will. Some bosses in the series without strict patterns will still annihilate your party but they don't even have the decency to telegraph it well enough. Like Iwaoropenelep nuking you with lightning on turn... uh... this or that, guess. Or the absolute fucking bullshit that is Super Jormungand in Nexus having flexible turns between when he can use one crippling debuff fire attack or another completely different move that requires a completely different response.
