Why do people still genuinely treat player counts as a metric of how good a game is? In that case, 99% of all games are dogshit.
>>
because autism
>>
Loser leftist mentality lol

You lost, get out of gaming. Cry on GCJ, cry on Blusky, cry as you cut your dick off in the bathroom and ACK.

cop out answer. Most questions can be answered with "autism"

Because for an online only pvp game, it's literally a life bar for the game health, and because journalists suck so badly that it's the best proxy we have for actual sales.

And be less of a retard. Marathon for example would be a killer indie success, but because of it's budget, it's on the top 10 financial bomb list.

quake 3 arena/quake live is one of the best PVP games of all time. Just because it doesn't have like 50k players online at any given moment doesn't inherently make it a bad game

Forming an opinion is hard. Expressing an opinion is even harder. This requires passion, critical thinking, and importantly to have actually played the game. On the other hand, playercount is objective data you can wave in someone's face.
With the decline of OC and the rise of wojak, it's only natural that /v/ critical discourse has deteriorated as well. AI garbage has only accelerated this decline.
>>
Because if a game is good, people will want to play it. If people do not want to play a game, that implies there is something wrong with the game.
>>
>>739221162
What about old games like Chrono Trigger or MGS 2? Surely their worth cannot be proven through player metrics alone right?
>>
>>739221162
So true! Nothing bad has even gotten popular, and nothing good has ever been underlooked. Citizen Kane? Wizard of Oz? Box office flops you know.

You can't argue against numbers, everything else is just subjective opinions and endless bickering.
>>
>>739221162
That implies anything that’s niche or obscure, are inherently worse compared to anything mainstream.

/v/ is full of third worlders who only have smartphones. They can't play most games, so their "game" of choice is rooting against people having fun. If what someone enjoys fails, it causes misery that the third worlders believes is equal to or greater than their own. That makes the third worlder feel like he's as good as a real person.
What the third worlder doesn't realize is that the worst day for a homeless man in the USA is better than a third worlder's best day.
>>
>>739220818
Because they are brown

>What the third worlder doesn't realize is that the worst day for a homeless man in the USA is better than a third worlder's best day.
I dunno man, drug withdrawal is pretty bad.
>>
>>739220818
Depends on the context. Like say if Sony closes multiple good studios so they can funnel money into a live service multiplayer game, shouldn't that game have tens of thousands of players at any give time?
>>
>>739221306
If those games were good, they wouldn't stay obscure. Niche is another thing, since that means it has limited appeal but even then you can contrast games within that niche and see what people prefer.
>>
>>739220818
I find it funny how chartwatchers would consider normies bad because of their mainstream taste but we have to go by playercount for games
>>
>>739220818
when you're under 18 it's very normal to pay attention to trends. after a few years of being in society you stop giving a fuck.

>I wanna argue that a game is successful/a failure
>one metric I can use to support this is how many people are playing
That’s literally it. It may not be a good metric, especially as it holds less weight with old and/or singleplayer games, but it is one that can support whatever argument you’re trying to make, and the best part is that it’s flexible; you can accept them when they’re for your argument, and dismiss when they’re against. Same reason people will cite review scores and TGA awards for why a game is good/bad even if they’re far from accepted authorities as well
And that’s the magical thing about 4chan: with no standards and its anonymous nature, you don’t have to make a solid case for your argument, you can say whatever and shitpost freely without recusal!
>>
>>739220818
Is that what /v/tards have been doing? I only look at player counts for multiplayer games because low player count indicates the playerbase is mostly comprised of sweatys who play nothing else and know every min-maxing trick - thus ruining the game by being unfun to play with/against
>>
>>739221039
LOL. Who the fuck claimed that? Are you on a script or just propping up a riddiculous strawman?

>>739221216
Their financial worth and popularity can.
>>
>>739222318
While I'm sure you can dig up someone pretending to be that retarded if you try hard enough, you're clearly missing the point, particularly for multiplayer games.
>>
>>739220818
For multiplayer? Yeah I’ll join the 23/24 and not the 6/24. It matters.
>>

Quake 3 sold 222,840 copies within a few months of release https://web.archive.org/web/20010112165200/http://www.gamecenter.com/News/Item/Textonly/0,78,0-3868,00.html
>>
>>739224795
LOL. Let me slow it down for you, because you're clearly struggling with the concept.

Quake 1
Quake 2 TE
Quake 3 arena
Quake Live
Quake champions

are all legendary multiplayer games. But if you're going to blindly suggest someone pick one, going with the one with the high player count is the thing to do.

This is even more critical when the game is live service and can't be locally hosted, and can be shut down.
>>
>>739220818
>99% of all games are dogshit
uhh yeah?
>>
>>739220818
Its like stocks, it's all about the perceived value of what it should be. There are $15-20 stocks that are profitable companies and do fine, but if something like Apple or Alphabet dropped to $15-20 there would be people jumping out of windows. This is why Marathon having 10k players is a disaster and Balatro having 10k players is not
>>
>>739220818
Because its the best we have. Critic scores are even worse.

/v/ is literally infested with people who don't like and don't play video games (mostly pol monkeys and whatever those robots who's entire personality is watching 'woke' fail videos). They essentially in a permanent state of edging where they want to be constantly mad at something and this is their choice of leisure.

>drug withdrawal is pretty bad.
I can tell you for a fact, any man who has been through drug withdrawal would choose going through drug withdrawal rather than be mexican.
>>
>>739221468
>/v/ is full of third worlders who only have smartphones.
I've seen people on /v/ try to argue against PC gaming by saying consoles are more cost efficient when it comes to electricity. To me, someone who spends all day in front of a computer for both work and entertainment, zoomers not even having a computer is unthinkable to think about, yet it seems like a common phenomenon in America.
>>
>>739230142
Zoomers being too stupid to use a computer is an entirely different phenomenon than people living in favelas and angrily typing out OPs about UE5 on Gboard.
>>
>>739220818
they can't formulate a proper opinion, byproduct of a lack of soul and vocabulary, so they retreat to a cold metric
