Why are none of them good?

fun genre
>none good
you're not a fan of the genre

>Why are there so many indie metroidvanias?
It's a good way to create a lot of content. You don't need particularly good platforming or particularly good combat to make it work, and people will be traversing the same areas so you can make do with less overall maps. In a typical momentum platformer, the jump height, the run speed, and the level layout need to be fairly precise in order to allow players to identify challenges and have the time to react and get past them, while not making them trivially easy. None of that is a concern for exploration platformers, since you just need to wall or a pit that the double jump will get across but a single jump will not.

>Why are none of them good?
The same reason as above. People pick exploration platformer because it seems like an easier game to make than a traditional platformer, a side-scrolling brawler, or something similar. In a way, they're right. But just because someone CAN make an exploration platformer with boring layouts doesn't mean that it produces a good game. "Go left, get the double jump, go right, get the wall climb, go left, get the bomb missiles" does not make for a very fun gameplay loop, but someone with terrible level-design skills can certainly make games like that.

>Why are none of them good?
All of them namedrop SOTN as an inspiration but they have a 5th of the bosses.
>>
easy genre to make games for and there's already a legion of players wanting to play more of them for some reason. the genre is incredibly stagnant and nothing to this day has been able to even come close to sotn in terms of scale and creativity. inb4 hollow knight, that game is just a boss rush disguised as a metroidvania.
>>
>>739227209
>Iron Bramble
Oh fuck, Rusted Moss devs are making a second grapple hook metroidvania? Nice.
>>
because the genre itself is shit, duh
>>
>>739227209
Because if you have control over the design language and gameplay it's a decent style guide for making a decent game.
This is conversely why no AA or higher studio makes these anymore, since they have too many cooks to actually have any intentional control over their design language or gameplay.

Copying the SNES and Playstation games? NO
Copying weaker consoles forever and ever? YES

Haha you remember Constance right anons…

>nine sols gets shilled yesterday
>try it because it's also "free" on ps+
>pretty average metroidvania with unspectacular level design
>difficulty is plateauing around lady ethereal
>then at the very last boss of the game, the difficulty curve metamorphoses into a cliff touching the ionosphere
what's this shit, yellow taiwanese monkeys overcompensating by turning the furry metroidvania into balls torture?

I'm not joking, check eigong boss fight on youtube. This shit looks like Goku and Frieza going at it on planet namek.

>splat down some random pixels

walla every metroidvania that's ever existed

you didn't complete it in less than a day, are you enjoying it through youtube?

I actually started it before the thread was made and took 20 hours + around 4 hours of idling and drinking coffee while the game was running, so my hour count was at 24 when I fought Eigong.
I was so tired colors were fading at the edge of my vision, after beating the immortal twink and the twins tonight I thought the game was soon to be over but it went on and on, then I finished the city and Goumang's research center and went for Eigong. And I didn't win.

After Lady Ethereal i just cheated for the other bosses because i didn't like the femboy boss, felt too bullshity. I didn't even try the mutated one and Eigong felt like something made specifically for BDSM enjoyers. Who would have known we would get the poster child for bullshit in just a couple of months with Silksong. The metroidvania genre is slowly getting coopted by the git gud gang just like Arpgs. It feels like a corruption of these 2 genres where builds and exploration is less rewarded than being trained to press buttons at a pixel perfect level.

See?
I was right. Once again
>>
>>739229941
No retard, I opened youtube to see when exactly I was supposed to parry the four slashes opening on phase 2 because there's nothing more absurdly shitty than having an instant death you-must-react-in-a-picosecond trial at the start of a new phase. And I'm not going for true ending fuck that.

Look at the marketplace of some game engines. They are shovelware.

hollow knight, rain world, and nine sols aren't good?
>>
>>739227209

what makes a metroidvania good?
>>
Because they focus on meme shit like boss fights instead of stuff that matters like the upgrades or making it fun to navigate the map
>>
>>739229914
You have options in silksong. There's no builds or tactics to alleviate the pain against Eigong. Either you get the reflexes of a 20yo to place all the perfect parries and delayed unbounded parries or you go fuck yourself. No get out of jail special moves, no spacing will greatly save your ass, no fancy tools, no way to brute force, no defensive play that aren't relying on precise millisecond tuned successive parries because not doing perfect parries means you will take damage. There's no other way than follow the rigid play the devs planned.

So if the game's working good I don't mean it, but the final boss' difficulty is cranked up all the way to one hundred and fifty whereas all the previous bosses were at ~30 or 40%. Seriously ridiculous.
>>
There's very few of them that are good, but I'll admit that the reason I like some of them is because I can sort of turn my brain off a little, ironically enough. Just fuck around and explore. While I like some combat centered metroidvanias I've had enjoyment from dead easy games in this genre just because they had a lot of stuff to do and explore.
Islets is a good example. That game was way too easy, but it's nice as a time waster.

A now 40 year old with 4 kids unable to complete puzzles in the witness that has serious problems with the silent hill series was able to do this.
Why can't you?
>>
>>739230240
Good movement? Rusted Moss is good because you can actually get to virtually any area in the game without any movement upgrades so long as you make full use of your guns and the grapple hook.

I can do it but I'm not enjoying it. You don't ambush me with a granny beating me up using a lightsaber at the final stretch of a medium difficult game you [definitely not Chinese] niggers.
Imagine playing Kirby and the wholesome candy factory but then at the last level you have to fight Albert Fish.
>>
>>739230601

Hmmm.... right, right.

I want to make a metroidvania.

Stop trying to justify yourself to a person who can't even realize that people have different skillsets. He thinks that if he is young enough he can have the skill sets to do anything as good as anyone. Zero Theory of Mind skills.

Also the Kirby argument doesn't work because Kirby tends to have ridiculous endgame/postgame stuff

Yeah I can beat her, if I got half her health tonight while ruined and suffering from sleep deprivation surely I can do it tomorrow.

And after saying that I'm about to die in my sleep before I can try again because that's how shitty my life is.

>He thinks that if he is young enough he can have the skill sets to do anything as good as anyone
I wasn't the one to imply as such, he was:
>Either you get the reflexes of a 20yo to place all the perfect parries and delayed unbounded parries or you go fuck yourself.
>>
>>739227209
>so many indie
Because they're the easiest games to make using an existing game engine as all the systems it relies on are basic and independent, you don't need to think about systems design or architecture, you build it independently and put it together.

It's the same reason why doom clones, vampire survivor clones and so on are very popular for indie devs.
They're the video game equivalent of stencils. You use existing tools and layer over a stencil someone else made and you have to be a retard to fail to achieve.
>>
>>739230874
You can be 40yo and have the reflexes of a 20yo, I know it's crazy.
>>
>>739231105
Hell you can learn a lot of things in your 40s. Some people think this shit just stops at 25-30.
>>
Any good ones that are similar to Aria of Sorrow or portrait of ruin? Record of Lodoss War was fun.
>>
>>739230802
Or you could just use cheat engine and enable godmode ;)
