To be fair, in breath of the wild, I went straight for the towers, marked each shrine I could see from the top of them, and then relied on the radar to find most of the rest of them, I didn't do much in the way of exploring.

I mean this was the other part of the problem for me. If I hadn't already explored the world so meticulously in BotW I might have been okay with flying around on a hover bike all over the place. But it really felt like I was just going through the motions and filling out a checklist with a flying mount that solved almost everything.
>>
>>739243570
Do you know how much you have to explore just to get enough battery power to actually make use of this thing? It's not like you can just make it and skeet-skeet through the sky, you need lots of battery power which involves you da-da-da, exploring.

>...or you could build a hoverbike and slap a (weightless) brightbuld on it
the balancing for the zonai devices/ultrahand is laughably bad. What is the fucking point in zonai lights that add weight, consume energy, and are uncommon resources when you have brighblooms fucking everywhere that are completely weightless and infinite.
It absolutely baffled me that shit like this was overlooked, it undermines so many creations.

This is like, the single most battery-efficient steerable vehicle in the game
>>
>>739244470
What >>739244896 said.
This is the most efficient vehicle possible, you cannot make a more efficient vehicle than this with the tools available in the game.
>>
Overrated. You will get better milage out of wings early game the short lifespan still lasts longer then your battery. And if you grind for battery there is no reason not to grind for green rocks to make more wings.

I will say flying can make things seem harder then they are. The world is still built in a way that can be easily navigated on foot. If you fly you will miss the natural signposting that helps guide you to secrets.
>>
>>739244704
You are the only person derailing this thread with absolutely zero value.
>>
>>739244990
>And if you grind for battery there is no reason not to grind for green rocks to make more wings.
Those same green rocks (zonaite) are used as the currency for battery upgrades. If you're farming them you may as well spend them on upgrading your battery reserves.
>>

its been a while but thats what i used for most of the game before i got bored
>>
>>739245239

>>
>>739244896
>>739244947
I agree with you. But it doesn't change the fact that you need multiple full batteries to get anywhere close to it's potential and even then you're still going to be scouring the land for more batteries so you can fly longer. If you try flying it on a single battery you aren't getting very far.
>>
>>739245158
Yes and yes.
Totk feels like an expansion pack for botw rather then a proper sequel, but its still a very impressive game.

I still dont understand how people can complain about the reused map like they memorized every inch of topography, the world does change between games and for me thats part of the appeal.
>>
>>739245186
But is it better than skyrim?
>>
>>739243570
Fuck you I don't even ride the horses if I don't have to.
>>
I used the hover bike, but thankfully I am retarded and didn't even consider it until I was already at least halfway through the game. However it did stifle my desire for exploration, outside of already having a couple battery armor pieces and using it to explore the sky and the underground, which was fun for a time before realizing all challenge is removed when flight is involved. Puzzle? Fly around it. Really was poor foresight on Nintendo's end.
Now the dupe glitch which I kept due to having the 1.0 release, that was a quality of life mechanic. They shoulda just made that a feature. Thank God I never put any money into it.

You mean a hoverbike with an extra fan for more forward thrust?
Sure, I don't see why it wouldn't work, but you are adding more weight and consuming more energy for little gain. The 2 fans + steering stick is the most energy-efficient vehicle in the game, certainly the most efficient flying machine but it even rivals most wheeled vehicle designs.
>>739245297
>you need multiple full batteries to get anywhere close to it's potential
This is true of literally every zonai contraption you make, it is not a problem exclusive to the bike. If anything, the bike suffers less since it is a very efficient vehicle.

I feel like I could replay BotW, but I could never replay TotK. It's so unnecessarily big and empty.
>>
>>739245925
It's like 3 menus and maybe 5ish seconds at most. I see where you're coming from, but it's there and people used it. I did. I'm fact doing it with a fully powered battery was actually even more beneficial.
>>
>>739246098
I only used it early-game, by mid-game I had enough upgrades to not care
>>
The weapon system is the worst thing about TotK, imo. The Nuts and Bolts shit can be mostly ignored by using the most simple solution and using presets.
>>
>>739245864
Im just talking about using a large charge which gives infinite battery for a short time.

But really between attachable batteries, usable charges, and the fact recharging doesnt take much time.

I dont get how BotW had people bragging that they never used teleports and just walked everywhere, and totk has people complaining that driving the equivilent of a prius isn't very fun.
>>
>>739246237
large zonai charges are somewhat rare and honestly better saved for perma battery upgrades instead.
>>
>>739246148
Fair enough, I too felt that afyer a certain point the battery was fine on its own, painfully efficient on the hover bike. Made it unfair to not build it. After awhile I just stuck to making cool land crawlers and speeder bikes to limit my ability to break the game.
>>
>>739246364
Are they? I was throwing them into the gachapon dispensers for better payouts. You could buy them from the shops too.
>>
>>739243570
I never used a hoverbike during my whole 100 hours of gameplay, and the only times I would create a vehicle would be to transport Koroks or do specific side quests. I took the same approach I did with BotW which was exploring by foot and just taking my time going from place to place.

I can imagine how finding out early about the hoverbike would ruin a lot of people's experience with the game, once I started using it (which was pretty much right before heading to Ganondorf) I realized how piss easy it became reaching literally any area in the map as long as you had the battery to do so.
>>
>>739246530
You're right I was thinking of zonaite
They really didn't need to split this up into 3 separate currencies.
>>

The sad thing is that you don't even need the bike to achieve this. Fast travelling to sky shrines or towers and then just using a zonai wing lets you cover 95% of the map. There's like 15 caves and 4 wells worth exploring, and more than half of them are incredibly obvious that they are important, even from the air. You can just go up high and drop down to an objective, fast travel back up high, and do it all over again.

The game would've been 100x better if the depths didn't exist, the sky was way bigger, the gloom was all over the surface instead, and the game was about people that were forced to take to the skies in a bunch of sky islands to survive, slowly making expeditions below and building (you know, the point of the game) back hyrule as they find new ways to overcome the gloom. Gorons struggling because they can't mine to eat, zoras because there ain't no water up there, rito can't fly because of high winds at high altitudes, and gerudo having to open up their civilization because trade and displacement becoming mandatory for survival.

instead we got a quarter baked sky, an underground thats only value is looping 2 spots for rocks to make more bikes and get pristine weapons, and a surface with trivialized exploration.

>>739246585
I feel like the discovering the hoverbike is a natural progression, the game basically says "make a flying device that can lift and transport X object" and the natural progression of that is the hoverbike when you think "what if I only transport myself". Mine was a trike when I first made it because I found the attachment of the fans worked better in a triangle pattern and I assumed a bike wouldn't turn as well and keep balance in the air as it does, but most people I know that played it came up with some similar flying device completely naturally and it always completely ruined exploration for them.
>>
>>739246585
You successfully mostly avoided one of the single biggest issues with the game, which is that with the exception of the Hover Bike, creating a vehicle or machine of any kind takes longer and is more resource intensive than just doing things without them.
I'm usually intrinsically motivated to build stuff for the hell of it, but the downsides of it were so high that it never actually ended up feeling rewarding. At most I got a "neat" out of strapping a rocket platform to a korok

File: 1200px-TotK_Crenel_Road.png (1.48 MB, 1200x675)

The thing about exploration in BOTW and TOTK is that there are 2 ways to appraoch it
- Roaming around, climbing moutains to skip roads or skip areas, this is what everyone does on their firsrt playthrough because they couldn't know any better or they don't care about optional stuff. This will quickly result in the feeling of the map feeling small and uninteresting. This kills exploration fast and makes you want to get over with it.
-following the roads, there are main roads your horse follows and side roads not mapped yet still visible that lead to any areas. If you plan your exploration after reaching the tower and unlocking the map you can easily clear out an area of side content while onward the main quest in way less time than it takes going back trying to find what you missed.
Despite it being an open world there is a logic to the map and where things are, how to navigate it. Respecting the roads gives you a more fruitful and fulfilling experience than just "I want to go there", skip roads and gets unfulfilling rewards.
Ignoring the logic of roads make open worlds boring, you lose the dynamic that comes with enemy camp, shrines and korok puzzles placements that make it all cohesive. Like playing an actual video game with levels.
Being able to climb anywhere gave players the wrong type of freedom. Harshly punishing them for being impatient and negatively influencing their experience overall.
>>
>>739243752

Sounds like a (You[retard]) problem. I built it once to try it then went right back to never interacting with the zonai shit outside of fusing goblin bits onto my weapons. If a mechanic makes the game worse just don't use the mechanic. It's literally that easy.

it helps to use some sort of block that sits at a right angle. i used a ledge in gerudo town. you put the control stick flat on it with the front facing off the ledge, then stand in front and hold and angle the fan to attach to the front. be sure to stand straight in front of it and hold the fan directly between you and the control stick, so nothing attaches crooked. basically do the same for the back, just making sure that the control stick is sitting flat and level. maybe use some planks or something to rest things on for stability. its all about attaching things straight.

you don’t even need to make this, the goblin glider is essentially the same thing but with worse handling, and that’s literally just the two fans and the steering stick arranged horizontally on a flat ground, an extremely intuitive design that almost anyone can figure out. i ran around with a goblin glider myself for a while until sheer osmosis online exposed me to the better design, you can still fly to 90% of the places you can fly to with a hoverbike

How? It's all empty with the same 15 enemies.

I didn't play TotK and never intend to, but the impression I got is that 80% of the world is intended to be skipped over so that the vehicle building mechanics serve any practical point whatsoever.

Notice how that happened? How can you be a GOAT if your sequel is better? And how can the sequel be a GOAT if it feels like a DLC campaign? A w'allah Zelda is made irrelevant in all GOAT conversations

This, it just makes everything in the game pointless
need to get somewhere?, build a hoverbike
explore the depths?, build a hoverbike
need to bring to cristal or another thing to a certain point? build a hoverbike and glue the thing to it
place is to high?, build a hoverbike
some retarded minigame or quest?, build a hoverbike
Honestly, im still surprised they didnt patch this. It's really sad to stuff like the fire temple for example, you can clearly see the developers intended way on how to explore and solve the dungeon (all the rails system), but why botter with it when you just can build a hoverbike and get to all the points? in the dungeon. Sadly i realized too late i ruinded the game for me by building this shit...

When i played Echoes of Wisdowm later, i found some ways on how to exploit the game with some echoes, but this time i just chose to play in the developers intented way, i knew i was going ruin the game again... They really need to tone down this "freedom" for next games
>>
>>739253114
These superficial details don't matter. They are not the content you engage with. There was just a birdwatcher in the dev team.

>>739254106

>>
>>739253918
The problem is TotK, and BotW to a lesser degree, grant the player too much freedom. Gameplay can be neutered down to its lowest degree with shit like the hoverbike and climbing and it undermines creative or intended solutions. If Nintendo were smart they'd realize there's a middle-ground between the linear design of older 3D Zelda like OoT and TP, and nu-Zelda's freedom. But of course they're just going to double-down on the freedom aspect because they have no idea what makes this series good and BotW sold well.

The wing expires in 1 minute I believe, it's almost completely pointless outside of the tutorial where you're forced to use it in place of the glider because you don't have it yet.

The fans expire after 30 (!) min of active (!) use (the timer doesn't tick when they're turned off).
>>
>>739248468
Gliders and hot air balloons having a despawn timer fucking sucks shit, death to whichever designer implemented that.
You can't even hot air balloon out of the depths before it despawns, you have to prep a second one midair to jump into.

not really an issue, just kind of lame that instead of trying to build different things with the myriad of parts you have people found optimized the system down to 3 parts, all of which are very common. when I played I avoided the hoverbike because I liked experimenting, even if most problems are "solved" by two fans and the cockpit.

I guess it's all preference in the end. I ended up figuring out the 2 fans and a stearing handle thing on my own while playing, and I never really wanted to do a bunch of experimenting with building. I'm happy to have a fast mode of transportation while I play Zelda, and never really feel the urge to use it when presented with a puzzle.
>>
>>739259539
that's fair, I quite liked building little contraptions for things even if the sandbox was fairly limited. best quest in the game for me was getting logs for the coastal village. I built a big ol pick up truck and pretended to be a lumberjack for a few minutes. shame there was basically no other quest like it.

>>
>>739243570
It's the fact that you already explored the world in BOTW that kills your drive to explore.
>>
>>739254776
wings can go pretty fast with 2 fans though, I think the short timer was intended to be a trade-off for the speed. I always used a wing with fans for my needs since I'd rather go fast than take several minutes going somewhere
>>
>>739243570
I only used it by the end of the game where it just felt more practical than any of the other vehicles to find all the wells and blossom trees. Otherwise I tried to rely more on my own vehicle ideas.
>>
>>739243570
The REAL problem, is that the game never forced the player to make anything more interesting. The skies should be dangerous. The player should need protection from attacks. Or greater speed to out-fly attackers. Or weapons to kill potential attacks. But it had none of that. Necessity is the mother of invention.

TotK gives you the ability to build structures and vehicles using almost every resource you get through the game, and some of those resources are Zonai devices which serve different purposes, such as wings that let you glide through the sky, wheels, steering wheels and even water pumps. The hoverbike can be built using two of the most common devices, two fans and one steering wheel, and it's by far the most optimized and battery-efficient vehicle you can build, allowing you to travel pretty much everywhere you want. The issue is that the hoverbike is so damn good that it completely kills the sense of exploration that the first game had, it removes the need of having to manage your stamina while swimming or climbing and turns every single travel from point A to point B into a straight line. The only thing you have to worry about is your battery, which you can easily mine Zonaite to max it out.

Because what makes those all so interesting and engaging to do is the question of what you'd need to do in order to tackle them. When you know the answer each time is hoverbike, it takes the mystery and challenge out of them. You can still do it your own, different way, if you find that method to be fun in and of itself, but nothing can restore the intrigue, because you know what is THE real answer each time.
