/v/ is fucking terrible today, so let's have a freeware thread. Post whatever freeware you've been playing recently— fangames, overhaul mods for HL2 or Doom, doujin shit, weird itch.io indies, whatever.
If you call anyone other than yourself a shill you're a faggot.
>>
I have been playing Quarantine Crystal, preddy good Pokémon romhack and I think it's /vp/ made. The fakemon quality is surprisingly high

Freeware games should be illegal becuase you don't have to pay for it which means companies like Nintendo don't get money.
>>

>>
PC Gamer used to run this piece called like Free Games of the Week which was cool. It's where I found out about Gang Garrison 2 and Inscryption before it was Inscryption. I think the only way to check them now after some site overhaul is the Wayback Machine.
>>
Ill just link this guys entire itch.io page here since I think all his shmup games are pretty cool. His danmaku games have a slow-mo mechanic instead of bombs so I think theyre pretty easy to learn and the visuals and music are cute and cheerful so that it feels relaxing to play.

Coming in here to recommend Stunt Rally again. It's made by one Polish guy obsessed with power metal. The game features 232 tracks, 33 cars, 40 environments, supports up to 6 players at once and has a robust level editor. My one caveat is that the current version (v3.x) is not at all friendly to low spec devices, so if you're like me and still running a shitbox then get v2.7 as that is the latest before he reworked the render engine. If you like time trials in fantasy worlds then you will probably enjoy Stunt Rally. I also firmly believe It's one of the few racing games to have loop-de-loops in it and make you actually feel like you're fighting against gravity while pulling it off.
>>
>>739247016
I feel like freeware racing games tend to be disproportionately high quality for whatever reason. Something about them attrats the good kind of autist.
>>
>>739247584
It is mainly because they all build off of one another. Stunt Rally is a fork of VDrift, Speed Dreams is a fork of TORCS and BeamNG could not have existed without Rigs of Rods. You can even see this with Ring Racers and SuperTuxKart. Heck, outside of driving games there's DarkPlaces and every single arena shooter it spawned, intentional or not.
>>
>>739245368
Bump for interest.
>>
>>739246709
It's a boring piece of shit.

>Items aren't fun to use (you have one weapon and it's janky)
>hilariously bad attempt at drama (your character has one line and it's "no dad no!")
>really unsatisfying final boss and ending

The only good thing about it is the soundtrack

https://anuke.itch.io/mindustry - Factorio-lite RTS/Tower defense. Bigger impact on combat compared to Factorio but with smaller maps instead of one huge overworld. Units scale up pretty hard, higher tiers can get pretty crazy.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2551500/__KANNAGI_USAGI/ - a free Sekiro clone bossrush, not much else to add.

https://rtsdimon.itch.io/panzershoot - found this one recently, a simple but nice looking top-down shooter, reminded me of Crimsonland.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/41100/Hammerfight/ - one of my personal favorites, a fairly unique game where you control a helicopter with a hammer by simply moving your mouse. Very satisfying combat once you get a hang of it, but also rather janky.

Warning that this link is a direct download link, mainly because the creator of this went to make another popular game and griefed their old website.

Similar story with the OG spelunky, even if you enjoy the modern versions of it I definitely think the freeware version is worth checking out just for the nostalgia it oozes.

It's one of those games I want to like but it has one severe flaw: the collision detection is square-based and doesn't correspond to the Paint-based environments.
Given how often you have to do pixel-perfect jumps off edges it's extremely easy to end up doing a mid-air jump instead by accident because you don't really know where the edge even IS.

It also made several trap items more visible. I can understand not liking EXP, but being able to avoid that fucking bubble is worth it. The hog bombs are something I'm mixed on. I finally figured out how to use them when they changed them, so now I need to learn how to use them again. They should've deleted the drop target, though. Fuck those run rapists. Getting stunned for several seconds is less devastating than being flung 50 meters across the map.

Man I remember playing Cube 2 map editor mode with internet strangers and thinking it was way better than that new indie building game everyone was talking about, "Minecraft".
>>
>>739261562
>They should've deleted the drop target, though
It's way less fucked up than it was before, at least, since the whole "you can't hit your own items" change means you pick it up if you collide with it twice in a row. It also means you get amps from the next person who hits it, so sometimes if you're already going slow it can be worth tapping the Drop Target to switch its alliance.

>game I worked on is on the list
always makes me feel tickled pink. getting featured in the pixelprospector video list of 200+ freeware games alongside the likes of cave story, iji, and spelunky has made me associate the Bit Shifter album with that same lofty feeling. Feels pretty alien that it was over half my lifetime ago though and I've accomplished nothing with it lmao.
A contribution to the thread topic aside from the obvious suggestion I would make if you knew which game I worked on:
Discovered an android repairing game called D1AL-ogue. Apparently it's a student project so they didn't want to charge money for it. Not too hard, but I like the visuals a lot. I actually stumbled into it because of an entirely unrelated /v/ thread a month(?) ago that brought attention to schools that published student projects onto steam so I went digging.
Next Fests demo threads are also a great source of finds if you have the stomach digging through the piles of trash.

Star Control II has hands down the most "alien" feeling Aliens I've encountered in vidya. It's worth playing just for them, alone, but it thankfully also offers solid space exploration with lots of optional side objectives and secrets to uncover. Banging music, too:

oh okay. sometimes I buy the random mystery keys for a dollar but usually they are crap. I don't want them polluting my library. So you guys can just have it.

This is the game:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2113040/RUNGORE/

I'll give it a minute or two before I post the key so you can decide if you want to go for it at all, rather than you redeeming the key ASAP because reading the steam page will take too long and will mean you don't get the game because someone beats you to the punch.

I'm a big fan of Metroid Planets. It's a remake of Metroid 1 that does it's level best to make that a good game without turning it into something else like Zero Mission did.
It also has an incredible randomizer that might as well be the Metroid Equivalent to Mario Maker. There are already tens of thousands of user created rooms so even with a curated pack you can play for ages and still see new things.

I know RPG Maker games tend to get a bad rep nowadays but I URGE everyone to try playing through the Towelket games. They're extremely funny/kino/based on so many levels. It's an older Japanese game series so the dev holds nothing back, it honestly feels refreshing to play something that clearly isn't held back by censorship/concerns over public image and just shows the dev going full crazy over both perverted stuff and genuinely creative stories. Also there's a bunch of games but they're all separate from one another so you can just pick out the ones that sound the most fun.

Nekoashi Otome Wondergirl feels like the perfect /v/ shitpost game but it actually evolves into a really fun game. If you're looking for stupid fun game then try it out.

This one.
90s RTS with custom units, units & base & tech get kept between missions, some neat automation (damaged units retreating for repair then coming back, commander units to handle focus fire,...), looooots of artillery stuff.
Was a commercial game and made open source when the studio closed, still maintained for modern hardware.

RTS are in its best rn
You have to understand that most people that claim to play RTS never actually played them outside 5 hours in easy when they were 10

But BAR particularly is a very very good game overall, it's a remake/sequel to Total Annihilation and is super polished and very easy to play and learn but hard to master. Its got up to 8v8 and several PvE modes and challenges with shitton of content and pretty explosions. You can dick around or play competitive, the game design is just good (because TA was good)

The shilling.
BARafags are absurdly hostile to new players (yes, even by rts sweatlords standard) and are desperate to bring in new meat to have something easy to dab on.
You will have more fun challenging a korean at Brood War than joining a BAR lobby tagged newcomers-friendly.

candybox sucks. farm caps at 100 lollipops/sec but the game doesn't tell you. instead of idling, the game is about stocking up potions for ages and then using them all at once because you can't beat most quest rooms otherwise. and if you fuck up a quest you lose hours worth of potions. and there is no way to speed up the way, questing in the swamp gives you jackshit. and then there's one-offs like one-time spells that double your shit but you have no idea when to use as you don't know what's coming or how long the game even is. it's fucking annoying to play.

Thanks for the reply. Touhou fangames are nice but I want to play random crazy shit. I remember a Madoka game where you play as Homura and shoot rockets with buildings having real physics as they collapse or the shitty Fate/Zero musou clone, all of this had soul. I remember the comiket threads would have googledocs of all these games uploaded and I regret not following up on the comikets that came after.
Do japs still make doujin fan games or did copyrights get stricter over there? Is it all just DLsite/steam trash?

I liked cividle because it is more active than typical idle games, since there are resource chains and a lot of the wonders have special rules to manage, like adjacency bonuses. The game is technically free but free players can only access 1 of the premium civs at a time, it changes every week.
But maybe that's not as idle as you'd like.

Not a fan of the genre myself so can't say much on the quality, but the second one is a rather amusing looking smash clone that has a huge and rather weird selection of various anime characters, including Lelouch and CC from Code Geass, Lucy from Elfen Lied, Mia from that monstergirl anime and more, some being awkward 3D renders seemingly done just for this game.
And speaking of, I remember there being an old fanmade Elfen Lied fighting game that was never translated, but I lost my copy of it with the harddrive, and can't find it now.
