When did the trend of purposefully making games the majority of your audience doesn't want start?

With Subnautica 2

Ahem...

Nintendo constantly has made games "no one asked for" and they routinely are huge hits.
>>
>>739255143
isn't subnautica 2 good tho?
>>
>>739255216
Ms. plays better than OG, though.

>nobody wanted open world zelda or pokemon
They’re probably the most consistent company when it comes to making consistently quality exclusives for their consoles overall.

After Obama, then it went into overdrive mode with Trump's first term. Now you have things made out of spite in the open like the recent the Boys, you haven't seen the worst yet don't you worry your pretty head about that
>>
>>739255067
never ever make a sequel of a game
>>
>>739255067
There was an official memo sent out in 2014 that told the industry that gamers were dead and they weren’t the audience anymore.

>every western game dev decided that attractive women were a no no
Surely all just a coincidence.

Once tumblr leaked containment and started bleeding into irl around 2014 like the rest of the internet. Normalfags and ther consequences have been a disaster for the internet race
>>
>>739255243
yeah maybe in 2015 but lmao? They're pretty consistent with giving people largely what they want.

It's ramped up now to maximum grift now that governments start handing out taxpayer money for "marginalized groups" and puishing the agenda.

What's funny is that none of the podcasts I listen to even talked about this game.
Look, I work long hours by myself.

Prototype 2 was one of the earliest examples I can think of
>likeable antihero protagonist who goes on journey of personal understanding
>compelling sequel hook in the form of antagonist's son that's referenced several times throughout the game
>throw both out the window for oc donut steel DEI snowflake niggerman revenge plot that turns the original protagonist into some generic HUWITE power hungry maniac
>>
There have always been people like that, it's not even vidya related.
Some are grateful to their customers, others think the customer should be grateful to them.
It just became more apparent with the rise of indie games.
Nowadays you don't have Takeshi coding 12 hours a day, contractually not allowed to talk about anything and forced to commit sudoku if he brings shame upon the studio/publisher.
Now you have some idiot on his own (public) discord that gets a bit too cocky because he feels popular for the first time in his life since his game has 1000 wishlists on Steam.
Of course you will read less shittalking from the former and more from the latter.

Started in 7th gen with Wii, PS3, and 360. They came to the realization that non-gamers vastly outnumbered gamers. So the objective shifted away from making the games gamers will like most, to "broadening the net."
>>
>>739259374
This, even if I didn't like the ow the edge era that corrupted every IP in the early/mid 00s, it was still better than the "next gen" era of blockbusters
>>
>>739259374
Weird how their first instinct was to actively shit on the gamers, assuming they'd just take it.

Sounds about right. World went to shit when he legalized gay marriage.
