I actually do need a Legend of Dragoon thread and I finally stumbled upon one so I'll take it. I was recently in Japan and figured I'd buy some PS1 RPG since I'm learning nip anyway and preferably with plenty of discs to save me and my PS1 the burned discs. I cluelessly settled on LoD not knowing how the regional differences worked for this one. Apparently the JP version is balanced around the Pocketstation? It also seems that the translation is incredibly clunky and ESL but otherwise pretty direct which I'd be fine with in that case if the balance is that fucked.
Is the JP version still fine to play without the Pocketstation or should I just sell it and play the US version?

I don't think you need to sell it, I own a copy despite not having the hardware to play it just for the sake of nostalgia.
I only ever played the NA version so I'm not super familiar with the pocketstation minigame, but I'm pretty sure the NA version was rebalanced with the consideration you wouldn't have access to it.
There is a "PC port" of the game called Severed Chains which does some polishing to the translation and includes a lot of QoL features you might want to take a look at.

I'm not much of a collector desu. If I'm gonna keep it around and not touch it, might as well pass it along to someone more interested in it (even if they just end up being a more dedicated collector). That and my place gets pretty dusty so I don't have a good place to keep it pristine long-term (just have it in a box with some other stuff for now.
Either way I'll look into that later but seems like I am playing the NA version once I get to it.
