It's crazy how they used to pump out 2D games every year like it was nothing and it didn't matter how big of a success they were. Darkstalkers was never a huge hit, but it was popular enough to make 3 games. Then along comes the 3D era and games take way too long and are too expensive for an IP like Darkstalkers to continue.

If a new DMC game were to be made and have Darkstalkers characters, then they would be sidelined, and if a Darksalkers game were to be made, then Dante would take the spotlight since he's far more popular than everyone else. Anything related to say, Anita becoming humanity's ruler, or even develop her powers, would be downplayed because Darkstalkers wouldn't be allowed to upstage Dante. It would probably be a really parasitic relationship.

Darkstalkers can't come back, the market only supports a small number of fighting games at a time. Fighting games are heavily dependent on a player base and the fighting game community is small so the community can only gather around and support a small number of games at any time.
