People try defend this with a

It's soulless and it's objectively worse
>>

So shinra isnt the defintion of the overly clean and sterile company?
>>
>>739266404
No, I wouldn't say so. Look at their reactor and vehicle design. It's not sleek at all. It's quite busy.

What criticism of 7R would you consider valid?
>>

Judging by how the shinra building is, im not suprised. Shinra loves the sterile look.

In Remake it does, not so much the OG.
By the way, you forgot to answer the question. I'm curious, because if you don't accept people liking the OG elevator more than the Remake elevator, I'm wondering what criticism you would accept.
>>
>>739266846

Yeah, thats why we are talking about remake. It's a different context.

Anon... you seem to be having some trouble. I can only conclude that there is in fact no criticism that you will accept of remake. You can deny this if you want, but your dodging of the question tells me the truth. If you think of any, let me know.

Now show us a blackrock industrial elevator in a fantasy setting designed in the 90s

I see we're resorting to "the bottom is better because it's more realistic" even though we're talking about a fucking final fantasy game.
Let's go with that logic and say remake is bad for all the unrealistic things in it, shall we? I wonder how quickly this guy will change his tune.
>>
>>739267308
Why do you think Final Fantasy VII should be more realistic? You must hate Cloud's big sword

If you criticize remake you have to be wrong, it's as simple as that. Even if the defence makes no sense and is easily rebuked or dishonest. You cannot get away with liking anything about OG more than remake, he won't let you.
>>
>>739266404
not at all. They don't care at all about safety or the comfort of their employees. What possible reason would they have to waste time and money making their plebian work places safe or clean? The only places that should be clean and nice looking are the places where top level executives work. The low level shit like factories should be dingy disgusting unsafe oily pipe nightmares and the head offices should be nice clean offices, which is how it is in ff7.
>>
>>739267478
Sterile shinra design...
>>
>>739267308
>>739267253
Oh wait i see what you meant, you say the 90s because that was the OG. Well, this is remake, and it is being made in a modern era, where the themes and concepts have changed over time. Back in the 90s the cyberpunk genre was dirtier, see ghost in the shell or shadowrun. It was more about disparity and removal of the individual. Nowadays we are closer to the cyberpunk reality than ever before and the control is applied differently, so they decided to set the "new" shinra closer to reality. Making it just like the 90s version of shinra like >>739267572 said would make them look incompetent as fuck. So they controlled the world by making shit tier designs of the reactors and facilities. How does that make any sense?
>>
>>739267684
I see. So the criticism of the elevator isn't valid. Can you give us any examples of 7R criticism you're find acceptable? Or is it all wrong by default?

What Is The BA7RY Test?

Firstly, who is Barry? Barry is a XV fan who combs 4chan for posts criticizing XV to reply to. In his mind, every criticism of XV is wrong, no matter how big, small, reasonable or unreasonable. It's all wrong, and he will set you straight on that matter.
Unfortunately, FFVIIR has its own Barry, named BA7RY, who acts in the same way. He's hard to miss. Do you suspect he's ITT? Then apply the BA7RY test. It's simple!

Just ask him: "What would be a valid criticism of VIIR?"

Barry would never criticize XV, even slightly. And BA7RY will never criticize VIIR either. This simple test lets you know if you're talking to a reasonable person who is capable of discussion, or a wall of fanboy autism who will never give an inch and is only here to tell you that you're wrong wrong wrong!
If your anon replies reasonably, he passes the BA7RY test. If he immediately chimps out and starts screaming about boogymen, BINGO! That's a BA7RY! After all, Barry's favourite tactic was to call everyone Nathan. Because only one person ever called out Barry, right?
Try it yourself!
>>
>>739267950
Oh, uh, the people in the slums favour a more minimalist look... just like todays slum dwellers. I play FF for realism so this was a big glowup for me.
>>
Rebirth did it a little better and Remake was an absolute joke. Imagine starting the trilogy with such a slop
>>
>>739265639
Why the realism? They already have a likeable black person, that's highly unrealistic.
>>
>>739267950
Look how much time they put into the render on the right and the player sees it for all of 5 seconds. SOUL
>>
>>739267908
Blackrock seems pretty close to reality. The facilities you mention are more like 3rd world indonesian type of shit, not 1st world industry like shinra would be. After all, they dominated the world.

>>739267992
It's not about realism, its about the setting being more adequate with modern times. The boys, for example, has it's own setting which is basically hate for the "superhero" character. However, the showrunner decided to take the concept of the comics and instead of making it 1:1 for the show, they decided to revamp the script and set it as a parody of the marvel movement and modern politics like female empowerement, alt-right, and LGBT pandering. The boys ended up being pretty shit, specially the ending apparently, but the core idea was great for the first two seasons. Same goes with Black mirror as a modern "remake" of the twilight zone.
>>
>>739267308
It was the decade before the world ended, it’s pretty significant.
>>
>>739268204
I see. And a criticism of 7R you would consider valid...? Just one...?
>>
>>739268302

>Top
Built for function like a real industrial complex. This what oil refineries and such look like. They're built specifically with no decal so the items can be easily repaired
>Bottom
Built for executives. It has to look nice because the guy with the suit might see it. Doesn't make sense in the context of the game.
>>
>>739268365
Because thats what an elevator would look like in a current day blackrock skyscraper, possibly. And thats what we want a reactor elevator in an ff7 game to look like because its more realistic.
>>
>>739268434
That is EXTREMELY retarded
>>
>>739268432
This
>>
>>739268365
I think its because Shinra doesnt want the reactors to explode for free and for that they need workers to actually get to places
>>
>>739266404
If you're willing to look past the surface. Shinra presents as clean and sterile in areas like their HQ, but when you get to their inner workings it's all industrial. Stuff like the Shinra Mansion basement, the reactors, the Jenova stuff in R&D. It's built for function, not for the public to be seeing.
>>
>>739268489
>Shinra doesnt want the reactors to explode for free
actually in the new and improved canon, they do
>>

>blackrock skyscraper

>>
>>739268575
I work as an engineer in mining, so yes. They are small and focused in functionality, no tubes everywhere .
>>
>>739268563
>True, shinra goes for profit, no needlesly details. The bottom elevator reflects that.
Actually it does the opposite. Bottom is to look clean, professional, sleek. Top is when they don't give a damn. You are contradicting your own argument just because you cannot let anyone like even one tiny thing about og more than in remake.
>>
>>739268563
>have you been in a real industral complex
I was literally a North Sea engineer for years taking "mako" (oil) out of the ground
>no needlesly details
The cladding over the inner workings of the elevator IS a needless detail anon. If you go in to any factory or refinery in the world, you're not getting an elevator that looks close to that. Know why? Because people need to get from A to B whole carrying and moving shit, and that stuff is so easily damaged it's unreal. Just because head office looks nice, doesn't mean the factories look nice
>>
>>739265639
Soulless remake for a soulless world.
>>
>>739268631
What do you think is behind all the cladding anon?
>>
>>739267684

>>
>>739265639
Why would an elevator be full of wires, tubes, bizarre devices and poorly lit? That makes no sense. I toured a nuclear reactor once and the elevators were immaculate and white. So was everything else in the facility.
>>
>>739268773
he doesn't think anything other than telling anyone with a criticism of remake that they're wrong. he'll make up anything to "prove" it, he doesn't care beyond that. it's basically a bot.

>>
>>739268774
Pretty much the entire point and theme of the entire game is that Shina is short sighted and greedy and willing to do dangerous and evil things in a short-sighted lust for profit.
The shitty condition of the factories is an intuitive visual indicator of this. They run wires and random shit in the elevator because it was the easy shortcut in design that took the least effort and thought. The lighting is bad because they don't give a shit about how unpleasant it is to work there and they get to spend 1 gil less on lightbulbs that way.
Everything in Shinra industrial locations in the original game is the bare minimum to be functional so they can extract that valuable planet blood with zero consideration for aesthetics or even long-term maintenance.

Most of the objects in the render look 3D to me as well, so someone must have modeled several unique object to use in that one scene.
So there’s really no excuse.
It’s not a comparison between a 2D game and a 3D game, where 2D is easy to draw, these are two 3D games, but back in the day people were able to produce a ton of unique 3D assets for each environment, and today nobody can do anything like that anymore.
It really is a mystery.
Either people had some secret back then, like using cocaine to produce three times as much, or people nowadays have forgotten how to work.

My biggest compliant is how much they nerfed Tifa's personality. Doing the cave over again was not fun, Presidents death wasn't well done, slum had zero soul, motorcycle man was pure cringe, forced song about how gender is just a spectrum is a perfect example of what was wrong with 2020 gaming.
What I dont get is my first playthrough I gave it a soft nostalgia carried 7/10, most of my friends disliked it. My last run I enjoyed it emensley, even with the DLC having one of the worst antagonists in video game history.

Kek. I mean they were awful in the remake. 90% of the issue was how repetitive and unfun they were. As actual plot point I like after 20 replays over 3 decades not knowing how this will end. you can't outsource soul, or proper art. the 10,000 jeets that made all the meshes that weren't the main characters, or set pieces, are specifically hired to make generic assets that can fit in any game. it's why the characters look wildly out of place around all the npcs.
>>
>>739265639
Everyone is focused on the cleaness but the bigger failure of design is more subtle.
In the original, cloud stands back in the corner. He doesn't care about this mission and wants to be physically apart. Barret has an ego over the job and cares about physically dominating spaces (seen also in the subway) so he's in the middle ranting.
In the bottom, he's in the middle because he's the famous main character of the video game in real life so that means he's important and goes in the middle.

everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but you genuinely have to be stupid to prefer the remakes
>>
>>739274147
I have not heard anyone ever say they prefer the remakes. Its if the remakes are fun games or did the fact they deviated ever so slightly cause you to shit your pants and plan to murder square enix.

I haven't played the remakes but this better not be deceptive bullshit, these are the same elevators right?
There was the one you take from the tunnels up to Shinra, which the top one is, then there are the ones that are in the Shinra building that looked slicker.

I'll defend it by saying that if bottom released in 1997, your head would explode, and if top released for the first time today, you'd say it looks like shit.

The air combat was frustrating. That is an absolutely valid criticism of 7R that they rectified and made enjoyable in Rebirth.
What criticisms do you have that does not result down to simple nit-picking or is simply a lack of skill/subjective criticism? What is actually BUSTED about Remake and Rebirth?
>>
>>739274147
When the original came out I preferred the original. It did what it was meant to do and it was entertaining, enjoyable, and worth playing again and again.
Remake and Rebirth are the same thing. It did what it was meant to do, was entertaining, enjoyable and worth playing again and again. I'm just not a stunted manchild crying about how the Remake needed to just be a remaster because I never actually played the original game and want to be part of the kool kids klub.

I posted something like this right after the first demo came out and the screeching from braindead fanboys was deafening. It's not just that elevator, either. The whole reactor looked like it was slapped together with generic warehouse assets from the Unity Store. It was bad enough I completely lost all interest in the game.

Remember when they did a tech demo where the camera has to pull out and back in showing all of Midgar running on the PS3?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y43tl9drD3Q
Now when we got the remake we were kinda expecting to see how massive Midgar is on the PS4, only to be represented by a static skybox image.

Because mako energy is essentially the souls of the deceased who have yet to be reincarnated, it's fitting that the wells and machinery used to harvest it and process it into energy is a mix of distorted torture devices and industrial piping and clockwork gears and chains and cogs hissing and squealing.

Pre-rendered, low framerate backgrounds in pc and ps1 games always instilled a level of craftsmanship that made me look up to adults who knew all this shit and managed to make every environment a place you'd want to look around or simply sit in. And most of the time it wasn't a standard factory or a standard amusement park or a standard forest. Instead they made shit that was unique. Like old cartoonish PC games like Day of the Tentacle had a place that bent at odd angles, had very hard perspectives to get right and instilled a sense that you could make a premise out of the place itself. The low framerate might be a thing that is kind of shit but it somewhat gave weight to 2-D art. It made it weighty. I know that's similar to the Bloodborne meme but you know what I meansince this gif displays that. It kind of also shows that the devs had a tight focus on what they could do and what they wanted to do and had to stretch to make those two things happen.

Not in the original Jessie and the other Avalanche guys only go up to the entry to Shinra but I remember seeing that the remake rewrites things and adds more content to characters so I don't know if that changes or not.

You're describing Kalm, and that's exactly what Kalm looks like.

Stylized color direction isn't really possible if your goal is realism. there's trade-offs. If top was lit like bottom it would look like they were standing in a nightclub not an elevator.
>>
>>739266404
In the original the point was that Mako reactors were new, and they accelerated technology development by leaps and bounds within just a couple generations. The reason why the reactors and everything else look so haphazard is because the technology was growing so fast they had to retrofit things together. It's a metaphor for both a cancerous growth on the world, and also a historical reference to Japan's rapid technological growth from a feudal medieval country to a world power in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
>>
>>739286906
I like that they actually put some effort into Rebirth, unlike Remake.

Still bomber because Remake sucked though.

The retard logic deployed in these threads to invalidate any criticism of remake is truly astonishing
