The new version is honestly pretty damn good. The CG can be a bit goofy at times but overall it's very well done. Some people complain about the gore not being as intense but it's closer to the manga.

Even on the NES, Metal Max was an incredibly forward-thinking jrpg with QoL features you wouldn't see standardized for over a decade, including fast travel. And the IP is still active.
