FACT: Shmups are one of the only game genres that are for people with jobs
>respects your time (most seesions would be 30-45min MAX)
>non-stop action
>dense gameplay

It's true.
People who complain about having no time for games are always the ones playing 100h+ open world games with braindead gameplay.

>Yeah bro, I want to stress even more after working
>my life is stressful that means I don't have any energy to do anything actually fun on my free time
Who lives like that, like their whole life is
>go to work and feel like shit
>spend whole night decompressing
>rinse and repeat

How is it the "only" genre?

You also have rhythm games and fighting games that deliver instant dense action on demand and through short bursts.

But anyways, I agree. The genres I play changed a lot after I got a girlfriend and started getting more busy with work. You end up focusing on games that you can play in short bursts.
>>
>>739272894
So they're the same as gacha and idle games where you do nothing and win.
>>
The same thing applies to all arcade games. The difference being that shmups are for autistics, bmups for depressives, fighters for manic-depressives, and puzzlers for psychos.
>>
>>739272894
Is deathsmiles good? The fact that it's a side scroller kind of puts me off
>>
>>739273390
It's not for beginners. While it is deceptively easy to clear, the actual fun difficulty in the game where you play it for real is not

>>
>>739273905
No.
>>
shmups have you constantly doing something
the gameplay is guiding your little dude (whatever it is, usually a fighter jet or something) through a field of moving glowing light patterns and hoping you don't get blowed up.
weirdly enough entire fanbases sprung up providing lore to shmups which isn't in the games, hinted at anywhere, it's like the entire way they try to claim the lore is accurate is saying "ZUN messaged it to me while he was in a drunken stupor"
>>
>>739274872
ZUN wrote books and there's manga though also the games were shipped with txt files that have lore

It's outstanding. Enemies attacking from both sides feels super fun. It feels more dynamic than games where enemies mostly come from one direction. Shooting left or right feels natural after a few minutes. Bullets are slower than your average Cave game so you can position yourself near the center of the screen in the middle of the shit. Stages are beautifully designed and often scroll up or down. There's a giant castle with enemies stationed on ramparts and grand staircases and an erupting volcano where you have to descend through tight rock formations with lava and rubble exploding everywhere and a nonstop barrage of enemies.

The music and visuals are great. I love the shiny skulls and jewelry that spew out of enemies when you kill them. There's a lot of slowdown (at least on the new port which is supposed to be more accurate, not sure about the older ones) when there's numerous bullets and enemies on the screen which I love and it enables you to weave through crazy patterns sometimes.

The game has a fairly normal difficulty curve. It's one of the easier caves but harder than Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu. If you're good you can play the whole game on Rank 3 which activates death mode which is extremely cool and add a whole new dimension and skillset to the game (check out Jaimers' level 3 1CC) as well as an optional extremely difficult EX level before the final stage that also upgrades the final stage to be even harder than the EX level. It also has a cool scoring system if going through the hardest route isn't enough for you. I could see myself putting hundreds of hours into this game.

If you like other Cave shmups you'll enjoy deathsmiles unless you just autistically hate horizontal shmups. I've only played Deathsmiles II for a few minutes. It's uglier and generally but has some cool bullet patterns.

If you're not on a budget the more expensive Deathsmiles I+II bundle on steam has better input lag and slowdown n some other stuff.

The vibe is great but the loli stuff is off-putting, if you can get over that it's a great game, awesome soundtrack

Progress with garegga: stage 6 post-fortress

I dropped my chain in stage 4 unfortunately, but obviously since it's a practice run that does not matter. I have no idea what the fuck to even do in stage 5 if I don't have medals though, I kinda just flailed around and twiddled my thumbs. Didn't practice anything after fortress yet so I kinda just died shortly after and then after I lost homing it was basically hopeless. I can upload the replay if anyone cares, it's very sloppy but I'll take whatever advice I can get

I play mostly rhythm games and there is a huge crossover with shmup fags but they always rub me the wrong way, idk just something a little too autistic. if I had to 1cc a single shmup in my lifetime what should it be? please do not say this loli game

consult this list and choose based on aesthetics and vibes.

I started playing R-Type Delta, that modern port, but I don't know, I'm not really a fan of the R-Type style. I don't even feel like going back to the game, and I haven't even played for two hours yet.
I also started playing Gunbird 2, and that game is pretty good, but it's really hard. The "Very Easy" difficulty is twice as hard as the "Normal" difficulty in Gunbird 1.

Konami has some good ones like Crisis Force and Nostradamus. They are not world renowned but they are neat.
Taiko has Touhou songs and Namco has some shmups but I didnt play them yet. Touhou isn't unique, it's just not arcade. Some people here hate it but I think it's fine. Yeah the beetle one Mushihimesama is good

Rhythm games are largely only for weebs since it's apparently impossible to revive Guitar Hero worth a damn (Rock Band is SOL because people don't like hanging out in person anymore)

Fighting games are also normie Kryptonite since they involve needing to be good and always aiming for improvement

shooters died for a reason. infinite high skill ceiling makes casuals not play it (no popular streamers will play it because they all suck dick at games.) gen z needs to be told by their favorite streamer or sloptuber what games are good (none of them play shooters because they are bad at games)
>>
>>739280652
>Yeah so far it's different from all of the other shmups I played
You can apply it all in harder shmups, it's kind of a nice intro because the applications are a lot more obvious, like the stage 6 boss has a big intersecting shot that's hard to dodge, and it's pattern changes based upon where I'm standing so its clearly aimed, so what visual indicators do I use to make the start of the pattern easier and more consistent? Can I use the background? Can I line my shot up with something? Stuff like that.

First of all "shooter" word belongs to FPS
Second of all bullet hell and heaven belong to cool indie like Vampire Survivors and enter the gungeon
Thirdly and mostly dense gameplay doesn't exist
Shmups are irrelevant why did they stop making them after xbox 360 died? I bet that stupid piece of shit microslop supported this dying genre. Thankfully they are dead just like shmup losers are

The hilarious thing is, to spite this anon, the proper(non-fandom) touhou wiki is probably one of the best-documented, best-sourced fan wikis in existence.
The benefit of having a primary fanbase composed entirely of severe autistics is they put in the work. Embarassing and humiliating spoutmouth anons is a funny side-benefit.

God fucking damn, R-Type Final 2/3 was so fucking bad. Final 1 wasn't a masterpiece but at least it was pretty to look at most of the time, had various detailed environments, and was generally pretty fair with a minimal amount of "R-Type bullshit." Final 2 was just eurojank, a failed attempt at what makes R-Type great. The stage designs got more and more basic as the game went on. It's a sad shame when a 30-something year old game is more interesting to look at than a modern game in its same series. Fucking shame.

I like it even though I usually hate sidescrollers. It has a lot of effort put into its visual clarity, and the familiar system makes it a lot easier to deal with enemies above and below you compared to most other horizontal shmups. Also the soundtrack is great and the girls are cute.
>>
>>739272894
Are shmups still fun if you manage to 1cc them or does each subsequent playthrough play out the same way because you've memorized everything?
